“My heart is full of gratitude,” Saldaña said from the podium at Sunday’s ceremony about her first-ever Golden Globes win. She went on to thank the Netflix film’s cast and crew, including director Jacques Audiard, star Karla Sofía Gascón and fellow category nominee Selena Gomez: “This is a first time for me, and I’m just so blessed that I’m sharing this with Selena and Karla and Jacques and all of my fellow nominees. Saldaña, who earned her first Golden Globe nomination for the film, praised her fellow nominees for their support. “All I have witnessed is just us showing up for each other and celebrating each other, and it’s just so beautiful,” she said.
In commending Audiard, Saldaña gushed, “You’re so French and so chic and confident and kind — I love it.” She added about her co-stars, “Adriana, Édgar [Ramírez] and Selena, I’m sharing this with you. Karla, no one other than you could have played Emilia Pérez.”
The other nominees in the category included Gomez, Ariana Grande (Wicked), Felicity Jones (The Brutalist), Margaret Qualley (The Substance) and Isabella Rossellini (Conclave). Moana 2 voice stars Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson presented the award.
When reflecting on her win backstage Saldaña said, “What I feel is absolute joy. Joy because there’s a sense of the present. I’ve been in this industry for 25 years. From the moment I transitioned from being a dancer to an actor. I was in my late teens, early twenties, not knowing what was ahead of me. And what I have witnessed is I’ve always been employed. I’ve always had good human beings and amazing undeniably talented filmmakers believe in me and bet on me, trust me … So, this recognition is paramount for my continuation as an artist.”
She also shared that she had received a message from director James Cameron, “who’s somewhere in New Zealand right now, cutting Avatar: Fire and Ash.” “And he, after all these years, he believes in me, so that to me … it nourishes my desire to continue growing as an artist,” the actress said.
Heading into Sunday’s ceremony, Emilia Pérez landed the most nominations of any feature film with 10. In addition to Saldaña and Gomez, the movie was nominated for best picture and non-English language picture, Gascón for best actress, Audiard for director and screenplay, best original score and two nods for best original song.
