Xbox Boss Wants to Beat PS6 on Hardware Capabilities, Not Necessarily Games – Push Square

GuestGuestLogin | Sign UpPush SquareGuestLogin or Sign Up”Let’s build innovative hardware that people want to use to play”The gap between the Xbox Series X|S and PS5 is growing dramatically, and there’s a good chance it’ll get even bigger in 2025.Microsoft, in response, has effectively ripped off the band aid and is in the process of rebranding as a third-party publisher. Last week, boss Phil Spencer indicated that virtually all of his firm’s future games will release on Sony’s system. However, the trillion-dollar titan has continued to express its ambition to make more hardware, leaving the question: why would you choose a hypothetical next-gen Xbox over the PS6?Spencer says his organisation plans to beat Sony on console capabilities, and not necessarily games.“I want people to pick hardware based on the capabilities of that hardware and how that fits into the choices that they want to make about where they want to play, and we want our hardware to win based on the hardware capabilities that we have,” he told Gamertag Radio. The outspoken executive didn’t offer any examples of the kind of capabilities he expects to offer. As things stand, the experience between the Xbox Series X|S and PS5 is quite similar. Sony focuses a lot on the immersion of the DualSense and technologies like Tempest 3D audio, while Microsoft points to features such as Quick Resume and its Play Anywhere initiative.Spencer continued: “In the position that I’m in, I look at hardware as a critical part of what we do, but [we’re] not trying to gatekeep the games off of other places for the benefit of it.“Let’s go build innovative hardware that people want to use to play, whether that’s in their hands, whether it’s on the television, or even other places.”It’s probably happeningPS5 one of many destinationsIt’s another commitment from Microsoft to creating a handheld, although it sounds like Sony is also plotting something similar. The Japanese giant’s Remote Play handheld PS Portal was already the best-selling accessory in the United States in 2024.The words Spencer’s saying certainly make sense, but we’re not sure how he intends to execute on it. Xbox Series X|S is trending behind the Xbox One with exclusives; we’re not convinced its trajectory is going to improve once it removes them.Furthermore, we’ve already seen from the price of the PS5 Pro, hardware is expensive to make these days, and Microsoft won’t want to sell at a loss. Offering a beefy unit with more horsepower than the PS6 will come at a cost, and we’re already in an era of diminishing returns.Plus, it’s hard to imagine Xbox innovating in the input department, as releasing a unique controller would run counter to its goal of being available everywhere. It feels like the company is between a rock and a hard place right now.At least it should make for an interesting few years as we slowly being to learn more about next-gen and what it means for both Sony and Microsoft.[source youtube.com]About Sammy BarkerAs the Editor of Push Square, Sammy has over 15 years of experience analysing the world of PlayStation, from PS3 through PS5 and everything in between. Publishers don’t want to invest funds in bringing games to Xbox simply because they don’t make the money they do on PlayStation and the more people that buy into Sonys ecosystem, it really makes a new Xbox a redundant exercise. Sure, it will sell to the hardcore fans, but everyone that bought PS4 and now PS5 won’t have any need to go off these systems since Microsoft plans to bring so many of their games to PlayStation. It just puts the perception to people that PlayStation will have all the games and most people would not see the point in getting another Xbox. It’s all that people say on other forums too, they feel no need to buy another Xbox console when they can play everything on PlayStation.Phil…. You do talk a lot of old guff. Please just don’t talk. It’s better for everyone if you don’t.@Member_the_game Yes that is pretty true. Even the whole thing with Playstation and their ultra fast SSD isn’t that much of a difference compared to the Series X.Innovative and Xbox don’t belong in the same sentence. No one is buying your hardware now, what makes you think people will buy any of your new hardware, when all your games will be available on their preferred platform going forward.Clueless.@MisterNintendo I suppose the only thing I can think of is, like, what else is he supposed to say?But then, he’s the one who insists on constantly doing these interviews despite their flip-flopping strategy. This is stupid thinking. Look at nintendo. They never chase technology that’s superior to its competitors (usually its much weaker tech) but they consistently have great games that are innovative and immersive. A work colleague uses his switch thing on his lunch break and I’m always amazed at how that bitsy thing handles games that run on the ps5 and still look great. Make better games you dolt..Good luck with that.Things like quick resume won’t be the deciding factor for me. The games are. And Playstation and Switch offer more high quality ones. Why would i deny myself those options?I dunno. They seem to be in denial regarding what to do with their hardware.Maybe pivot to phones or something.@Nepp67Very true, I was fortunate at one point to own both (as well as a Nintendo Switch)…Very much a 1st world problem but I almost had too much choice over what to play, there are only so many hours in the day obviously.I found with the Xbox, once I’d had my fill of the Forza games I was just playing everything else on the PS5 or Switch so I decided to cash in on the Series X whilst it was still worth something.Back to your point though, yes there really isn’t much (if anything) between them. For whatever reason I just always have preferred to have the Playstation as my main consoleThe xbox series x is supposed to be more powerful than the ps5. That wasn’t enough for the masses to buy an Xbox.MS owns COD, 20+ studios, they are making a lot of money and will make more money now that they won’t have big exclusives but Spencer knows the console business is done, PlayStation won because they made the right pushes in the right moments and that now includes China. GTA6 is the last test, when it releases consoles will get a boost, if xbox can’t boost with a once in a generation event then who knows what will be the future of xbox hardware.I think if the next Xbox is a unit that combines the price and ease of use of a console with the versatility and depth of a computer then it’ll sell very well. And if they add a Steam deck style handheld to it too? Very tempting.I do not know how realistic this is. But if anyone can, MS can.@LifeGirl I see a lot of people saying this but it just doesn’t seem realistic. If they’re opening up their platform to, say, Steam then they’re creating an environment where their customers may buy the hardware and never give Microsoft another cent. That’s fine, but consoles are subsidised and affordable because they force you into their own ecosystem. (PS5, for example, requires you to use the PS Store and pay to play online.)Get rid of that and you’re basically looking at a very expensive piece of hardware. At this rate I think it will be ps6 for me as main console and Xbox handheld as my secondary (assuming they release one)@Bionic-Spencer I think this generation is proof that the One / PS4 generation wasn’t “the one Microsoft can’t afford to lose”. The Xbox Series S / X is trailing well behind its previous generation. Lots of people who did have an Xbox last generation with their built up Xbox libraries who should be ‘locked in’ according to Spencer, have switched away from Xbox.People care more about what they can play that’s new, and what their friends are playing, than they do about preserving their digital libraries.@GymratAmarillo I think Sony’s going to market GTA 6 like it’s an exclusive. They’re not paying to promote Call of Duty anymore so they have a massive marketing budget burning a hole in their pocket, and I suspect it’s all going to be spent on GTA 6.There is one feature I wish PlayStation had and that is definitely quick resume. I can jump in and out of about 4 main titles in a couple of seconds.Sony could easy implement this as it is a hardware memory dump and nothing that complicated and Sony SSD being faster would be super quick resume. So Sony get stop wasting millions of GAAS and implement super quick resume for the cost of say a thousand pounds to you. Do it for the players.Just give me Halo, Gears of war and fable and I’ll be happy. The sooner they stop being all cryptic and mysterious about what’s releasing the better. That’s dumb. What’s the point of a better console if it doesn’t have the games to back it up? Lol
Just get a PC at that point.I have been Xbox since the 360, over 100 digital games library accumulated. Yet I got a PS5 last year because of the exclusive games… I know reddit isn’t the best barometer of the wider gaming community, but have seen so many posts and comments from other XSX owners who have jumped to PS5 because of the GAMES.People WILL switch consoles / buy a second console for games. It doesn’t matter how big a library they have built up. Exclusives sell consoles. I really think Xbox have got this very badly wrong.@ThomasHL 100% this. Helldivers 2 was enough for a bunch of my friends to grab a PS5These days both of them are just low to mid range PC’s and without them costing an absolute fortune, they will remain that way. No future Xbox is going to sell in significant numbers if they put all their games on Playstation and I don’t see how it can be significantly more powerful than whatever a PS6 is either.Due to their strategy, I’ve long since sold my Series X, which was actually a good console with some nice features and simply upgraded my PC instead. Now I can play all their games in much higher quality on PC or if I want that console experience, play them on the PS5 ProJust lips flapping in the wind at this pointWell the Series X was meant to be the world’s most powerful console and marketed as such, yet people still weren’t interested so it doesn’t even matter if their next Xbox is more powerful than the PS6 the outcome will be the same. Also Sony won’t allow Xbox to be that more powerful, they will know what each other are doing especially as they both have teams making games for each other. And all it will take is a $1,000 price point.Sounds to me like they’re either gonna have a portable that docks to the tv like the switch, or both a separate handheld and home console.Well, add compatibility for other controllers and practically turn it into a pc preferably portable and we’d be talking. Otherwise I don’t really see it happening. Just make software for every platform and we’d be good. They can’t make a console with any unique features if they are releasing their games on all platforms. That leaves giving the most flops, which they already have this gen, and nobody cared.I do somewhat suspect they might try to lean into their cloud infrastructure and try to do what they failed at multiple times, and market the “power of the cloud” as given them ultra powerful hardware. Again, didn’t work in the past, but what more can they do if they truly want my smart TV to be an Xbox? It’s ironic that one of Sonys failures is not communicating enough with their fan base, and one of MS’ failures is communicating far too much. It forces PR approved comments that are just laughable.Hey, Microsoft, don’t forget to make another Series S like version to kill another game generation! Everybody remember those times where almost every game was delayed because of XS S version.@GymratAmarillo why would GTA6 boost Xbox sales? People wont rush buying Xbox for GTA6. The only console that will get a boost in sales is PS5 & PS5 Pro (which will be the best place to play GTA6)They tried that with the Series X that’s why it had the tagline the world’s most powerful console and what happened? It did worse than the Xbox one. Gamers care about the games that’s what sells a product.Sony NEED this competition, hopefully Xbox can back up their words with action, this is the best for everyone, trust.Edit: @get2sammyb not sure if you can get this confirmed, but apprently Rockstar don’t want to do a series s version, but Xbox aren’t moving on this stance.I see a lot of people jumping on Xbox, as usual. I have a PS5 but much prefer Series X as a console. Yes, some people care about the features (quick resume, auto HDR, smart delivery, dolby atmos and dolby vision, the form factor, backward compatibility, the fact it’s whisper silent, a gamepad that suits me better with an actual battery life). I keep my PS5 for exclusives only at this point and truth be told I mostly play PS4 era exclusives on it. Let’s not pretend like this gen has been a spectacular success for Sony in the games department.@gollumb82 While I would agree this hasn’t been the golden era for gaming, there still have been very good games on the PS5, just down to your personal taste.Xbox: “Who cares about exclusives, let’s make hardware that beats Sony’s… Never mind, let’s focus on exclusives… Never mind, who cares about exclusives, let’s make hardware that beats Sony’s…”@Oram77 I agree, but I think that many Playstation fans feel a bit let down with the way this gen has gone (for both sides to be fair).both of their games are gonna be on my PC anyway , so hardware be damned 😂. though i guess using an xbox controller to play helldivers 2 could be considered an early hardware win huh phil? hahaedit – also , xbox has only beaten PlayStation with hardware once. If sony wanted , they could make another PS3 like system again , i’d love that . they should call it a super playstation or something.@Member_the_game Yeah, exactly. And if you bring in the idea of the best hardware, then you’re talking about PC which also has every Xbox game and pretty much every Playstation game plus countless thousands of games that are on neither platform. So I don’t see where Phil’s idea fits in. If you want the best hardware and biggest game selection then there’s PC, if you want something not on that level but still very good and with less upfront cost then you have Playstation… but he wants to make something with worse hardware than a PC and with less games than PC and Playstation? For people that want to play a relatively small library of games at not the best settings or performance, while paying more for it than other consoles? I think Phil needs to rethink it all.@get2sammyb
Tbh I think hes (and xbox) stuck between a rock and a hard place – he/xbox wants to stay in the console ‘race’ and knows its needed to push GP subscriptions (in the console space).
On the other hand, MS higher-ups want quick cash to appease investors after they lent him so much money to buy activision etc, so have forced him/Xbox into the situation of selling games onto Playstation – they dont get enough, or get greedy, and the ‘band aid’ being talked about comes off.
I dont really like the guy but I do think his purchase of Activision had an consequence he did not forsee, and he/xbox are now in a hole because of it.(Edit – finished it off as hit submit early by accident)As a current XSX owner, they’re going to need tangible advantages over PS6 to make me willing to lose out on all these Sony exclusives. Something they failed to do this generation. XSX’s theoretical power advantage is only seen in a small handful of games such Alan Wake 2. Most games show no difference or even a slight lead for PS5. Sony is already investing in AI with PSSR so I doubt they can significantly leapfrog Sony in that regard either. They can brute force it with larger chips, but it’ll be an expensive device limiting the mass appeal. And if it doesn’t meet a certain threshold of sales third parties won’t bother supporting it. And that’s why GameCube and Xbox struggled vs PS2 and the Vita struggled vs 3DS, despite being more powerful. I don’t see how they can possibly compete via hardware alone, but we’ll just have to wait and see. It’s essential that they deliver on these lofty promises to keep me invested in Xbox.Xbox’s approach has been weird/terrible for ages now. Just make games ffsQuick Resume, to me, is the best feature of the Series consoles. But if we’re talking innovation then the Dualsense is the star of this gen. Truly remarkable bit of tech.Comparing the hardware of XSX and PS5, for me the XSX comes out on top because it is so feature rich, they pretty much thought of everything. And PS5 only beats it with the SSD speeds.But…. nobody* cares and in the end it’s all about the games and you know when you buy a PS you are basically going to get everything bar Nintendo exclusives. On Xbox nothing is that certain.*I say nobody, I know there are a few Xbox enthusiasts that will disagree but for the vast majority it makes no difference.@Papa_Emeritus quick resume is ace…when it works.Every now and then I still find games that just won’t play nice with it. Was playing Recore yesterday and it just crashed back to the home screen.@djlard Because the PS5 hasn’t been hampered by the PS4? 😂I just don’t get where Microsoft are going with this. It seems like the two strategies don’t match up. They’ll be fine and make loads of money no matter how their console business works out though. Cloud could work for them in the future, it just sucks for xbox fans who want consoles.@Medic_alert ah yes. With the caveat of when it works 😀.@Kingsleyx you really should get your mum some underwear@Papa_Emeritus – I agree, it’s been the biggest surprise for me since getting a Pro in November, never thought I’d prefer a PlayStation controller but I do now.I hope Microsoft stay in the hardware business- they’re never going to outsell PlayStation but fanboys (on both sides) need to recognise that competition & choice are always a good thing. Plus Microsoft Rewards are insane – I get GamePass Ultimate for £45 a year, which is embarrassingly good value when you consider what you get for that.Only way you can outsell PS is selling something like a Series X at a Series S price and take all the losses and never expect any profits in the short run else PS is so far gone!I really do believe that Microsoft thinks of its Xbox consoles as only destined towards those who are already locked into their ecosystem and perhaps anyone else who might be interested in its specific features (for example, the comfort of the controller). Those people who have their digital libraries on Xbox are unlikely to shift over to PlayStation, or they might buy the Sony console but only for its exclusives and then just keep on using Gamepass on Xbox.Microsoft are not basing their strategy on the console as such anymore, but rather seeking to gain revenue as a hybrid third-party publisher and console manufacturer. The console exists for you if you want it, if you like the characteristics of the Xbox ecosystem and GamePass, but hey – they’d be quite happy for you to buy their games at full price on other systems like PlayStation. So, given these circumstances, why wouldn’t they manufacture a console more powerful than PS6? They’re giving you the option to exploit the extra raw power, if you want to; but they’re equally cool with the idea of you just buying their games on Sony’s machine. The only thing that I wonder is: how will they cover the costs of manufacturing? Will GamePass and revenue from software sales suffice? Time will tell I guess …It’s an odd way to look at it for sure. Like it or not exclusive games are the main thing that set consoles apart from each other. Fancy features here and there are nice to have but to say that will be the main selling point? I really doubt that will work out for them.I didn’t buy a PS5 for the dualsense features or graphical prowess. I bought it because it gives me access to the most games that I would be interested in playing. It’s as simple as that really. If they are focusing on software but still want to make a powerful console, it needs to be profitable from day one. Which means they wont compete with the ps6 which will sell at a loss or break even on launch. Sounds like a very expensive irrelevant piece of gear only diehard fans will buy.I don’t think Phil has much of an idea. Look what’s happened with current gen. Series x was more powerful than the base ps5 and still got outsold by a large margin. If he continues to release games on ps5 there isn’t any reason to have an Xbox unless your already in their ecosystem@Deljo haha that’s gross! Even grosser considering she’s dead.Looks like Phil Spencer is doing another interview for some reason@get2sammyb and it’s gonna say ps5 pro the best place to play gta6 cuz it ain’t launching on pc for god knows how long hell can u imagine if they pack in a copy of gta6 with ps5 pro that would be insaneXBOX still doesn’t have interesting exclusive kids games so I will choose PS6 instead. Btw, good luck. XBOX CEO is keep drinking kool aid and talking nonsense all the time.Removed – trolling/baitingGood luck going up against Cerny’s team as long as PlayStation lets him do the designing😁@__jamiie PS5 is another level of this… there are almost no games only for PS5. It is Sony’s thing they still focused games on PS4 and thrown PS5 into despair of live service madness for 4 long years. But they didn’t made PS5 Lite, weaker than PS4 and force developers to release games for this on day one.Didn’t they try the multimedia system that’s the centre piece of your home? People just want to play games. Good games. Something both systems are lacking.@Kingsleyx 🤣, no offence meant buddy just can’t resist a mum joke..@Rog-X “If anyone here thinks that Microsoft are releasing 2 next gen consoles at the cost of hundreds of Millions of pounds each and will also release their next gen games on multi format then you need to think again”So you believe they’re going to stay in the hardware market despite it making no sense to, because they’ve said they’re going to.But you don’t believe they’re going multiformat, despite them saying they’re going to (and literally doing so) And no-one believes the nonsense you spout about exclusives, no matter how much you repeat it. People don’t play console exclusives based on whether they’re first/second/third-party or not. The key thing is that they can’t play them on any other console.Last year alone there was The Last of Us Part II Remastered, Helldivers 2, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (GOTY nominee), Rise of the Ronin, Stellar Blade, Black Myth: Wukong (GOTY nominee), Astro Bot (GOTY winner), Silent Hill 2, Until Dawn, Lego Horizon Adventures and Infinity Nikki released on PS5 that I can’t play on Xbox. And what did Xbox have last year that I can’t play on PS5? An Age of Mythology remaster, a disappointing Hellblade sequel and Indy – the one Xbox exclusive PS5 owners might have been interested in is coming to PS5 soon anyway (as will the others).@Deljo haha nah all good I’ll go for Xbox if it can run on windows with working drivers. Pretty much if I can turn it into a normal pc since the hardware is identical.Nerrrr, we don’t want to gatekeep, unlike meany Sony…Auto translate: We tried to buy a bunch of publishers and take their games away from Sony, but no one bought those games or our consoles. So, in summary, we f*king failed so hard that Microsoft had to step in and give all of us at Xbox HQ a good firm slap.I do recommend people buy Indiana Jones when it’s out on PS though. Good little game that deserves to make more than £12.50 through Xbox sales 🤦‍♂️Not gonna happen x box.playstation will always top x box.the dualsense controller.the hardware.the trust in PlayStation over the years.word up sonValve has come a long way getting their store suitable for consoles. Maybe an Xbox with integrated steam os would give PlayStation a run for its money. But I guess Xbox also consider valve a competitor, so there’s prob no way that will happen. The only way I’d consider another xbox,is if it can natively play pc games off steam , give it twin operating systems or something, oh and i want to connect my psvr2 to it and play pc vr as well , that is all 😁In the last 20 years, MS had one great exclusive game – Hellblade 2And literally nothing hardware-wise interesting but okay@Rog-X is this comment sarcasm,i hope so, they have no competition from Sony regarding AAA exclusives ,they have some of the best teams in the business , granted they made the silly mistake of the live service nonsense , but I think they’ve learned there lesson with that.@Frmknst hellblade 2 was a snore fest , it was worse than ‘everyone’s gone to the rapture’, for headache inducing boringness 😂I think Phil should just shut up.Xbox One X was more powerful than PS4, still got outsold.Xbox Series X is more powerful than PS5, got outsold too.And to rub some salt in the wound, both Xbone and Series got outsold by 2014 tablet in less than three years despite one of those being in the market longer than said tablet. Its not about performance, its about what you offer to your consumer base, and Xbox has nothing special, everything I can find there I can find in other platforms, with either better performance or with a plethora of other stuff.Phil spencer does all these interviews but ive never seen a single interview with Hermen Hulst or Hideaki Nishino@CielloArc its not even about what you offer consumers sony could not release another game for the next 10 years charge more for third party games and people would still by PlayStations more then xbox. People dont like to change change its a risk they have had PlayStation all their life they was brought up with PlayStation so they will keep on buying PlayStations same reason why people keep buying iphones every year.@Anti-Matter psychonauts 2Whats with the narrative that Playstation has no games? Where are people getting this from? Playstation had more than 10 exclusives last year alone. And 3 of them were GOTY nominees as mentioned by a poster above. If you want to bash on Playstation, thats fine, but at least make it factual.“Let’s go build innovative hardware that people want to use to play, whether that’s in their hands, whether it’s on the television, or even other places.”In hands, on TV, in other places – smells like a portable console to me 👃People need to face facts, Xbox is going multiplatform and their hardware is now just a side hustle, they don’t care how many consoles they sell as it’s just another source of income no matter how much it is. Playstation 6 will be the console to get next generation as you can play all games in one place, Sony will also save money as there won’t be a need to get as many third party exclusives.@get2sammyb but your not looking at the full picture. If Xbox opens its next gen console to allow Steam & Epic stores. Then the console has their exclusives & any deals Microsoft make for the Xbox store as they’d be competing for your money. Their is nothing stopping Sony making an app store either. More competition leads to better pricing. Plus id bet Xbox games would be available on all stores anyway. Add Games Pass, Play anywhere etc. So id suspect Microsoft would still make money off of software. Plus Microsoft talked about 3rd party consoles. So what’s stopping Microsoft from partnering with Valve & others to keep costs down on hardware. They’d also be able to license it to other manufacturers.Yes because strong hardware does indeed sell well…that man can talk a lot of nonsense. He wants to justify everything that is wrong. Just accept that they can’t compete with Sony and continue with what they are doing now. Personally, the range of games in the pipeline is currently stronger than at Sony. But that is also because I think Sony has not announced more than half of them yet.i feel like home consoles will evovle to be like gaming pc’s , if you have an intel build or a amd build they still play the same games , so microsoft’s thinking would be even if you can play the games on ps5/6 , heres our hardware with gamepass you can also play it on. personally i like having multi consoles , will more then likely buy both again when they make new ones.@cragis0001 i highly doubt any of those situations would ever work. what would steam start selling versions of console games ? then i’m guessing you say , ” well make it a gaming pc based console to plug in the tv”, but then that would make all the games you already own on console no longer playable. you’d still get pc game pass games , but if you own a bunch of disc based games or purchased games off the console store you’d be screwed.@Member_the_game they are similar in that they are consoles, closed pc systems basically. That’s where the similarities for me end. So I can’t think of anything that would make me choose xbox over ps. What they should be focused on is why I should buy an Xbox in addition to a ps.Removed – trolling/baiting; user is bannedAs someone who enjoys all three current Gen machines I can’t really understand this idea. Historically it is very rare that the most powerful system ‘wins’ a generation. It all comes down to two things: the install base and the games. PS1 wiped the floor with the competition, despite being far less powerful than N64 and with none of the recognisable IPs. PS2 was less capable than Xbox or GameCube, but dominated because it was in so many homes. The PS3 stumbled at first with its ‘throw everything in and they’ll pay anything we ask!’ attitude. What brought people back? The games!I pray Xbox make something good so that PlayStation improve for the PS6 generation. Having the record of the worst performing game of all time is not what I was expecting for the PS5 gen. If this PS5 gen does not improve I’m off to Switch 2.They already lost a lot of market share in the console hardware space, and that will only continue to worsen when they increase their multiplat strategies. I think its going to be hard to get those costumers back with a new console.Phil Spencer will do ANYTHING except put out a good exclusive for Xbox 💀💀@Darylb88 yeah, you can definitely ignore all the amazing games Sony has released and focus on the worst performing game. That makes sense when making a decision on a new console.Sounds like you’ve already decided you’re only getting a switch 2.@Darylb88 Why not just both?Meanwhile Nintendo is smoking the competition with hardware from 2006. How? Games. Nobody wants a machine with power if there aren’t any games to play.@get2sammyb “ If they’re opening up their platform to, say, Steam then they’re creating an environment where their customers may buy the hardware and never give Microsoft another cent.”Granted, if Xbox’s recent developer connect is anything to go off of. Microsoft will be the only publisher releasing games on a constant basis. Unless you deliberately avoid any game Microsoft publish… You will be missing out on a lot of games. You’re going to give Microsoft money at some point or another.Isn’t the latest Xbox more powerful than ps5?@CutmastavictoryI’m afraid I have to disagree, as someone who in that past has owned both consoles (a PS5 and a Series X) I found them at their core to be very similar. I certainly couldn’t say that one performed particularly better than the other anyway. In fairness my way of thinking could well be down to the choice of games that I enjoy..With the exception of Nintendo and my love for Mario games I’m not massively into any particular what you may call “Console exclusives”The vast majority of games I play are titles that release on both PlayStation & Xbox …….., EA Sports FC, PGA tour, WRC rally games, WWE 2K just to give you a few examples.Don’t get me wrong there are a couple of exclusives I play, Astro Bot or Gran Turismo 7 off the top of my head, but in the main most of the games I enjoy playing are technically available on either console so when I say they are similar hopefully you can see where I’m coming from.It just so happens that for whatever reason my Console of choice has always been Playstation@AverageGamer Yeah but even if that’s the case, if you’re buying Microsoft games through Steam on an Xbox they’re losing 30% of the income. Not to mention the online pay wall.Series X and PS5 are essentially the same, feature wise. Sony’s biggest innovation was the Dualsense controller, which does offer a unique experience.@Toot1st Well, i’m not interested with psychonauts games.?????Look I’m not trying to act like I know more than these guys who have been in this business for so many years but dude. What hardware capabilities? Whats the next xbox gonna do? Double as a grill or something? Have AI to do my taxes? It just seems so weird that theyre doing everything but building a library of exclusives to compete. People have ps5s because of its (console) exclusives. People have switches because of their exclusives.Unless it takes you to another world like some SAO ish then whatever the hardware does will be pointless if it comes with little to no exclusive titles. It wont turn things around immediately but you gotta start somewhere. This gen will be hilarious to look back onWell I know not to write them off. If the rumors about Steam being on the next Xbox turn out to be true, everyone could have their own unique pocket.I would welcome that for the sake of competition.A new and exciting strategy from Xbox this…week! It will surely work!@Ultimapunch True but Nintendo had a grand total of zero games nominated for goty this year…I do think the kid and casual gamer market is a big factor in Nintendo’s commercial success.Like they’re really gonna make hardware after this gen…yea, right.Good luck to Xbox. Sony lost me after this generation. I’m switching to a steam deck. What could this innovation be if not for the games ? Or did I misunderstood when the great Messiah said by innovation not games ?VR ? No, that is not innovative.Advanced haptics ? No, nobody wants that, that just consumes too much battery. A copilot AI which helps You play the games ? Yes ! That would be innovative everybody wants some help to finally play souls games.Or a box which can connect to a TV and is at the same time a handheld. Yes ! Nobody every did this before that would be a revolution.Or what could this innovation be ?A console which upscales every game to 8k with AI ?@Artois2 The seriesX is more powerful if You just look at the compute performance, but it has a significantly slower cache. As a consequence the total system performance is not in advantage in general scenarios. And most benchmarks show that overall both PS5 and series X perform very similar and it is mostly a matter of the level of optimisations for a certain platform.@twitchtvpat If they can play the same games, was the point of owning both consoles? Push come to shove, i rather choose one. Two consoles that play the same games are overkill, in my opinion. If XBox (and PlayStation) want(s) to appease its gamers, make the next system with at least 10x more hard drive space than the current gen systems. Even with an 8TB external HD attached to my PS5, I’m picking and choosing what games to keep on the hard drive. And, honestly, I’m tired of moving PS5 games back and forth from external hard drive to internal SSD.Yes, I know, my complaint isn’t a major issue for everyone, and my brother would likely say to me, “hey, shut up with your first-world problem, you ungrateful whiner!” And I totally get that, but it IS frustrating to want to play a game but not have the SSD space to do so.It’s to the point where, on most PS+ games, I’ll just use the stream option instead of downloading the whole game. And, with some games where I have both the PS5 and PS4 version of a game, I’ll just play the PS4 version through my external hard drive rather than trying to make space on the SSD for the PS5 version. Do I miss out on better graphics and frame rate that way? Sure, but it’s quicker, and the time I save is worth it. 😕I’m sure this has been said many times before me, but the games sell the system, not the other way around. Provided the hardware is good of course. Innovative hardware can help but it’s not the only reason for success. In my opinion the only way forward for Xbox, as far as hardware is concerned, is for them to make the next Xbox basically a PC. Like you can install Windows on it if you want, that sort of thing.@tangyzesty At that point, they might as well sell pre-built PC. A console is a console. We buy a console to get away from Microsoft Windows and all that jazz. A console operating system should be designed around gaming, Microsoft Window is too multifunctional, which is fine for PC, but not a gaming console.I’ll wait and see. They can release first, they can say a bunch of things but they haven’t made me care either way. My Xbox is a blu-ray player and odd games (back compat or old, not a single Series X game yet only a handful of smart delivery games, South of Midnight maybe but that’s 1 game.I had Ratchet that disappointed and Space Marine 2 which was just a good game that was too similar to the first game besides fair operations mode ideas so the story was fine but gameplay was pretty safe and structurally like the first game besides quality of life, yay…….. that’s 2 PS5 played and Ratchet I quit early on. WRC 23 EA edition or Ride 5 I don’t have high hopes of playing as I found Ride 4 ok of ideas but too hard to play and motogp games are also unplayable for me of difficulty even on easy, not with older games they are easy to play in comparison). So this gen hasn’t impressed me in the slightest of games to care about 1st or 3rd party at all. Movesets, level design, abilities, missions, world presentation, any of it. A few that I thought were alright but didn’t do much/didn’t sell well anyway so….. Great.I’m not interested in either consoles or their games (no third parties either have made any interesting gameplay ideas happen just visuals, BORING in many core genres, the other types have been filling out my interests these days not the ones many focus on/are popular genres going down hill of gameplay ideas) so Switch 2 needs to impress me as it isn’t in console gimmicks or else eh.The next controller needs to be good or the next software feature (I can’t use quick resume as no digital games on Xbox but it has a place for sure).I’m fine going retro Microsoft/Sony it hasn’t been that hard with 2024 and not much appealing compared to 2022/2023.Sorry but Nintendo has already won that battleThey have made two promises:They will release multiplatform and they will still make their own gaming hardware. Those are two opposing ideas. They can try to keep both promises or rescind on one.Imagine this scenario:MS releases a powerful ‘switchy’ console that offers the good ol’ sofa experience, but also has a decent handheld experience with offline capabilities. They get to market earlier than PS6 with about a year’s worth of time. Combine this with the full might of MS publishing studios exclusive and have them go exclusive/offer strong incentives to go green on the games. Now, the real star of the show will be the industry’s best streaming library that can’t be beat on price. Now let’s look at the weaknesses of the competition and compound on why people might be swayed for reasons not having to do with MS.PS5 and PS5 pro owners may not have a strong reason to invest in a PS6 – it doesn’t really offer any exclusive games short term because Sony is still catching up with getting games their player base actually wants.Probability? 20 per cent.Even if they were to make the best hardware, it’s not what would make it good. It’s usually the UI and how easy it is to do things. And Xbox with the series x was a bit terrible and difficult to do certain things.
