In 1971, the federal government passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act to increase the number of three-day weekends for government employees, moving the holiday to the third Monday in February of each year.On a federal level, the day remains known as Washington’s Birthday though other states have included specific presidents, mostly Abraham Lincoln, or in Alabama’s case, Thomas Jefferson.Today, the day is most often recognized to include all presidents. As a federal holiday, government offices are closed on Presidents Day.Here’s a look at what is open and what’s closed on Presidents Day 2025:Federal offices – ClosedState offices – ClosedMunicipal, county offices – VariesPublic transportation – Modified schedules are possible, check aheadGarbage service – Most on modified schedules, check aheadFinancial markets – NYSE and Nasdaq are closedSchools – Most closedU.S. Postal Service – Closed.
