The trial of the man charged in the 1996 shooting death of Tupac Shakur, which was set to begin next month, has been pushed to 2026.
The Nevada judge overseeing the case agreed to postpone the trial date at a hearing Tuesday, Feb. 18, according to ABC News. This came after lawyers for defendant Duane “Keffe D” Davis filed a motion last week seeking to delay the start of the trial, citing the need for new witness interviews and further investigation.
Davis’ lawyers filed a motion saying new witness testimony from a private investigator could prove that Davis was not in Las Vegas at the time of Shakur’s killing in September 1996. The motion also claimed that new evidence had come out that could prove someone else orchestrated Shakur’s killing. That lead needed to be investigated, Davis’ lawyers claimed, before the originally scheduled March 2025 start date.
At the hearing yesterday, Judge Carli Kierny agreed to push the trial to Feb. 9, 2026. “It looks like there are quite a few things that are left to be done to get this case prepared so that Mr. Davis can have effective assistance of counsel,” she said. “Given that, it appears as though I really don’t have much of a choice but to grant it.”

Prosecutors confirmed that the state did not oppose the decision to push the trial.
Davis is charged with first-degree murder for his alleged role in Shakur’s shooting death. He’s pleaded not guilty and has been held without bail since his arrest in September 2023.

Prosecutors have claimed that Davis orchestrated Shakur’s murder and provided the gun used in the shooting. Authorities have alleged that the murder was retaliation for a physical altercation between Shakur and Orlando Anderson after a Mike Tyson fight that occurred just hours before Shakur was shot.
While Davis has denied the charges against him, he also seemed to implicate himself in his own memoir, Compton Street Legend, in which he described the circumstances around Shakur’s killing in detail. We want to hear it.
