In 2023, Tom said that the Apple TV+ show prompted a “meltdown” in his personal life.BuzzFeed StaffSet in Manhattan in 1979, Tom plays a young man called Danny Sullivan, whose arrest in connection with a shooting forces him to confront his mental health. The show — which also stars Amanda Seyfried, Emmy Rossum, and Sasha Lane — is loosely based on the real-life crimes of Billy Milligan, who was diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder.“It was a tough time, for sure,” he said. “I’m no stranger to hard work. I’ve lived by the idea that hard work is good work. Then again, the show did break me.”In another interview with Entertainment Weekly, Tom also admitted that the “mental aspect” of the role caused him to have a “meltdown” in his personal life as he struggled to differentiate himself from the character. “It took a long time for me to recover afterwards, to sort of get back to reality,” he said at the time.As you may know, Tom has talked very openly about cutting out alcohol back in January 2022, and while reflecting on The Crowded Room — which was filmed later that year — the Spider-Man star said the hostility on set reaffirmed his decision to go sober.“I thought, If I start drinking again now, with all this going on, it’s gonna get worse, right?” he recalled.Sounds like 2025 is going to be a busy year.
