The Genki Moonbase Power Strip Is a 7-in-1 Powerhouse That You Need in Your Life – Gizmodo

With all the flashy tech that comes across my desk, it’s easy to overlook the thing that actually powers everything – the lowly power strip. Look up any desk setup video; most folks look for ways to hide the necessary but otherwise dull accessory. But Genki, maker of a wide-ranging list of accessories and gaming peripherals, has found a way to elevate the power strip into a piece of tech that’s equal parts visually captivating and functional. The Moonbase is a 240W GaN (Gallium Nitride) 7-in-1 desktop charging hub that can power up seven devices simultaneously. The Moonbase is in the final days of a successful Indiegogo campaign. If interested, you can pick up the hub for only $98 or $139 with a full set of Moonbase cables. The first models are due to ship sometime in April. I was lucky enough to snag a prototype of the Moonbase during CES 2025, and it has been powering all sorts of devices ever since. One of my favorite things about the Moonbase is the design. Unlike the boring slabs of plastic you typically see with power strips, this hub gives space station chic. Most of my Moonbase’s housing is a bright white that Genki calls Moonlight. The AC plugs are marked Nodes 1 – 3 in that blocky lettering you’d see in games like Cyberpunk 2077 or Starfield with Moonbase stamped on the front of the device. The left side of the hub with the power button is black, while the right side and fabric-covered cord are neon orange. You can find a slightly deeper shade of this orange in the screws on the top, accentuating the translucent black plastic plug covers on the AC outlets. But the design fun doesn’t stop there. Hit the glowing white power button on the Moonbase’s left side, and the AC outlets will come to life with tantalizing RGB lighting. Genki equipped the Moonbase with eight different shades, including red, pink, blue, white, green, yellow, pink, and aqua. You can tap until you reach your favorite color, but the hub also has two options that allow the hub to cycle between a set number of colors.Oh, and in case white and orange aren’t your bag, the Moonbase also comes in a dark gray and teal colorway the company calls Darkside. And if you’re not in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, or Japan, Genki has regional variations of the Moonbase that cover a wide swath of the world, including Europe, Australia, Korea, Thailand, China, and the U.K., just to name a few of over 150 countries.  And while I’m a big design geek, I wouldn’t write about a power hub just because it’s pretty and lights up. The Moonbase has a couple of cool features. In addition to the AC outlets, the right side of the hub is a 240W GaN USB-C charger. One port delivers a charge of 140W while the one next to it delivers 100W, with the remaining two delivering 30W each. And yes, the Moonbase can handle fast charging, as it can power a 16-inch MacBook to 50% in 30 minutes. I used it to power my Lenovo Legion Go as I took turns playing Hades 2 and Dead Cells. My Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra? Forget about it. It only took 40 minutes to achieve a full charge with the 140W.While it was tempting to keep the Moonbase on my desk, this is meant for gaming, so it ultimately ended up in my entertainment center with an Alienware Aurora R15 gaming desktop, a Lenovo Legion Tower 7i Gen 8 desktop, and a PS5 Slim plugged into the AC outlets. The 140W outlet swapped between my Legion Go and my MacBook 14 M3, the 100W kept my phone charged, while the 30W kept my DualSense and Xbox Elite Series 2 controllers topped off. It was just as good as the hub’s RGB lighting fit right in with the light show from my entertainment center and my Alienware 55-inch OLED Monitor. (What can I say? I love flashing lights.)Thanks to GaN technology, which offers lighter, more efficient power solutions, the Moonbase also runs cooler than traditional silicon-based chargers. The device also has built-in temperature controls to guard against overheating. In addition, the hub offers protection from surges, grounding, overcurrents, overvoltage, and multi-faults.Genki offers a collection of companion cables of varying lengths for use with the Moonbase, including the shorter 1-foot (3-meter) Moonlink-S or the 6-foot (1.8-meter) Moonlink-L. There’s also the Moonlink+ 3.3-foot (1-meter) cable, which has integrated LED displays and can handle up to 40Gbps data transfer. But the star accessory, hands down, is the 100W Turbo Charger. A flat charger, the TurboCharger acts as an expansion module for the hub. Throw three of them into the mix, and now you’ve got a 540W, 10-port beast of a charging hub, ready to power just about anything you can throw at it.Finally, a power strip that’s as flashy as the rest of my tech. The Genki Moonbase will turn a lot of heads with its futuristic lunar base looks. And while the design will get you through the door, the functionality will make you stay. From the generously spaced AC outlets to the powerful GaN USB-C outlets that can charge some laptops in 30 minutes, the Moonbase is truly a device that’s for techies by techies.
