‘System Shock 2’ Remaster Is Coming To Nintendo Switch With A New Name – Nintendo Life

GuestGuestLogin | Sign UpNintendo LifeGuestLogin or Sign Up’26th Anniversary Remaster’ didn’t have the same ring to itNightdive Studios’ previously announced spruce up of the classic action RPG System Shock 2 has been announced for Switch and given a new name: say hello to System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster.Formerly known as System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition, this remaster will be a modernised version of Irrational Games and Looking Glass Studios’ 1999 survival horror sequel and was originally announced in 2019 following Nightdive’s re-releases in the mid-2010s. Yes, it seems odd that you’d rename something as the ’25th Anniversary Remaster’ after you missed the 25th anniversary last year…but hey, good game=good game, we guess! There’s no release date mentioned, although the PR does say it “will soon be released” on PC and consoles, with a release date announcement planned for GDC 2025 during the Future Game Show Spring Showcase live stream. You can check out an old trailer below, and here’s some flavour blurb from the press release:It’s the year 2114. As you awake from cryo sleep on the FTL ship Von Braun, you are unable to remember who or where you are… and something has gone terribly wrong. Hybrid mutants and deadly robots roam the halls while the cries from the remaining crew reverberate through the cold hull of the ship. SHODAN, a rogue AI bent on the destruction of mankind has taken over, and it’s up to you to stop her. Delve through the corridors of the derelict ship Von Braun and immerse yourself in the story-rich atmosphere and environment. Explore deck by deck and unravel the horrifying fate of the Von Braun and her crew.If you’re unfamiliar with the game, it had BioShock creator Ken Levine on design duties and is hailed as one of the PC greats of the late-’90s, injecting survival horror into the action RPG mould and going on to influence a generation of games, perhaps most notably Levine’s own BioShock series.Nightdive Studios has proved to be a very safe pair of hands when it comes to rejigging old classics, so we’re excited to see how the team handles this one on consoles.Let us know below if you’re excited to see System Shock 2 come to Switch. And it can only get better”We were working on getting the rights to this game for several years”About Gavin LaneGavin first wrote for Nintendo Life in 2018 before joining the site full-time the following year, rising through the ranks to become Editor. He can currently be found squashed beneath a Switch backlog the size of Normandy.Comments 24Not interested in this personally considering it’s a horror game and even more so a first-person one but still, happy to see it coming to Switch remastered by Nightdive for those who are!I’m still in disbelief that System Shock 1 never made it to SwitchI still have the System Shock floppy disks, played on my old 486. Didn’t play the 2, didn’t have the PC powerful enough at the time. So an obligatory purchase on Switch for me, even with 25 (or 26) years of delay.Looking good. Bioshock series was always one of my favs and I’ve been curious about system shock forever. May just have to give this a shot.Still amazed this made it out the door. I’ve always loved 2 way more than anything Bioshock, I’ll probably pick it up.Just listened to Billy Idol’s “Shock to the System”. It is 32 and it stills sounds like sh*tte.I’m still waiting for the remaster of SS1, which is currently Steam exclusive. There’s also the remake which is likely going to be on Switch 2.Nightdive also said that they were going to remaster the FPS Sin a few years ago and I’m still waiting.@LadyCharlie you’re right that is kinda crazy to think about like it would be similar to bringing tomb raider (modern version) 2 & 3 and not bring the first one lolLooks not as good as the original patched game with mods but still a pleasant surprise.P.S. System Shock 2 is one of the greatest PC games ever made.Well, now I’ve gotta play System Shock 1 on PS5 and then move over to the Switch…. unless these guys have like, a come-to-jesus moment and decide to give us the first one too?I loved this game back in the day. More than BioshockI can’t wait to be called an insect once again.I just witch they would bring their remasters of Forsaken and Blood to the Switch! I’ve begged them for years now, but it keeps falling on deaf ears..I just bought this on GOG. Never played it before but I played the first one over 12 years ago and it was old then but still fun. I’ve only just started it but so far it’s a lot more accessible than the first and you can see where games like Prey get their inspiration. Kinda looks like the Switch 2 is gonna be my new console this year. I’ve held off from buying the current gen Xbox Series consoles as well as the ps5 because, honestly it’s just more of the same but from what I’ve been reading on the Switch 2 I’m definitely interested and have been lacking a proper Nintendo console for 2 generations now, my last one being the wii and the gamecube before that; the which were very dear dear to me in spit of being an xbox/ pc fanboy. Nintendo is art, pure and simple.Played System Shock 2 when I was in 6th grade. The zombies genuinely scared the crap out of me…. I also couldn’t grasp my mind around the inventory RPG mechanics. lol ah, the year 2000.I asked NightDive for System Shock 1… they now need to give us System Shock 1@vio I think there is a licensing issue preventing Blood from being released on consoles. It’s great that SS2 is coming to the Switch. Hopefully we’ll also see enhanced editions of Thief and Thief 2 in the future. These three games all use the Dark engine.@OorWullie Hmm, that’s a bummer if true. What about Forsaken though? That was released on Xbox so no reason they shouldn’t also be able to release it on Switch. This was one my favorites on PC along with Thief 2 and Deus Ex. Truly the golden era of innovative fps’.This is great news. Love the Bioshock games, definitely want to check out this out.Looks promising. I Would check it out one day if a Physical copy is made availableSystem Shock 2 is a stone cold classic, and Nightdive are the best at this stuff. I can’t wait. I need to find time for the remake of the first game.@Aiodensghost I asked them too. They told me to go screw myself. I don’t think it’s coming.
