Featuring iconic characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog™ and SEGA universes, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds also introduces a distinct racing mechanic that promises to transport Sonic racing fans into a new dimension.Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds brings back courses that include land, air, and sea terrain as well as the never-before seen Travel Rings feature that affects the race in real time by transporting racers to all new CrossWorlds during the race. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds also offers the largest roster of characters in any Sonic racing game, as well as a wide variety of customizable vehicles. Players can mix and match vehicle parts, powers, and abilities to create a customized racing experience suited to their gameplay style.”Once again, this game is “coming soon” digitally and physically to the Nintendo Switch and multiple other platforms, and you can now wishlist the game on select platforms.Sega has also shared some more information – going into detail about the new gameplay features, and also confirming the “largest roster” ever in the series’ history, including the addition of characters from “SEGA Universes”.Sega is also running a closed network test on 21st February, but it’s for PlayStation 5 only. You can find out more about Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds in the following story:Update: IGN has an exclusive preview upOriginal Story: At The Game Awards last year, SEGA announced its new racing game Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds was “coming soon” to multiple platforms including the Nintendo Switch. If you’re wondering about when we’ll be getting another update, there’s now a rumour more information could be arriving as soon as this week during Sony’s ‘State of Play’ broadcast. It’s been fueled by Sonic Team producer Joel Youkhanna, who acknowledged this broadcast announcement on social media and shortly after deleting the same post. Here’s what was said:”Oh look, a new State of Play. #knowingsmile”Along with this, it seems there might have already been some screenshots leaked on social media. While we won’t be sharing anything here, the game’s title is very much reflective of the experience – with Sonic and friends travelling across worlds in different types of vehicles.Of course, nothing has been officially revealed or confirmed just yet, so we’ll just have to wait and see if we do get any Sonic-related news.Sony has said its show this week will celebrate “a creative and unique selection of exciting games from studios around the world” with the event running for 40+ minutes.Update: New info has surfacedPush SquareTaking place at 10pm GMT / 2pm PT / 5pm ETSonic X Shadow and Sonic 3 movie bring resultsAre you excited about the next Sonic racing game? I actually revisited it recently and it’s still a blast.Kinda funny that, as of right now, it doesn’t look like this game is going to be the multiverse game people were speculating it would be or All-Stars Racing 3 under a new name. Though I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s still some crossover content that just isn’t the focus, since Sega does kind of love their crossovers (especially with Super Monkey Ball)Hopefully NO Crossover with other SEGA IP as SEGA can put their rated 18+ IP characters on kids games and I really hate them.Indeed, from the initial “leaked” screenshots (if true) it does seem to point towards “Crossworlds” actually inferring more towards being a smashup of all previous Sonic Racing games (yes, ALL) in one, especially with vehicle types. However, I’m still willing to bet that as part of the tracks you’ll be portal-ling mid race to other worlds in the Sonic Verse. If Shadow can do it in his game, there’s no reason to think they won’t simply leap between different acts/worlds from each game series (like Storybook / Lost World / Boost / Classic / Adventure / Movie / etc…)Removed – flaming/arguingHope they just scrap the Switch version and just make a Switch 2 version instead. Knowing how crappy Team Sonic Racing was, it needed the extra hardware to give us that fast smooth 60fps performance. For Switch so far only Burnout Paradise, Grid Autosports, Rush Rally 3, Beach Buggy Racing 2, Cruis’n Blast, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Fast RMX all manage to hit 60fps but for some of those many visual details and graphical effects had to be sacrifice to keep it at 60fps. Cruis’n Blast for example dipped between 720p and 540p at times just to keep the game running at 60fps.@SalvorHardin dude doesn’t like when more mature series crossover with more child friendly series simply because they’re more adult@Serpenterror The fact they’re even making a Switch version will probably (hopefully) translate to a 60fps version on Switch 2@N00BiSH They probably don’t like the Sonic series then as it’s had adult themes of things like massive disasters and death since the Dreamcast era, even the last movie featured two on screen deaths.Assuming the leak images are legit, I don’t mind the return of the Extreme Gears in Crossworlds. I still like a new you-know-what game myself but this is somewhat better I guess.I don’t understand at all why they chucked the wider Sega crossover content from the series. Team Sonic Racing is rizzless, a corporate slop branding exercise without any of the charm of the earlier games. Stick Kiryu, Billy Hatcher, Beat and Vyse in there and then we’ll talk.I just hope it’s an improvement versus the huge drop from Transformed to Team Sonic. I mean…it won’t be, but it’s nice to stay hopeful! Transformed was Sega’s Smash Bros, imo. Focusing on his annoying, twee, idiot pals in Team Racing instead of other Sega worlds was a mistake. I’d like to think this is “Cross Worlds” as in other IP joining the fray a la Transformed…but it won’t be, lol. The only reason they’d do that now is if the saw those other IP turning into billion dollar franchises. All I want from this is NO overt ties to Sonic Prime whatsoever. That show is a worthless pile of slop and I’d dread to see subsequent Sonic media follow in its footsteps. Is it ok to still be frustrated about the reasons as to why he’s stuck in a car?I know we’re on the (..?) 4th modern “Sonic inexplicably stuck in a car” game, but I’m still not over it yet.Looking forward to the coverage about it here on Nintendo Life if it does end up happening (there’s no reason for me to watch the full State of Play just for this potential announcement)!”Indeed, from the initial “leaked” screenshots (if true) it does seem to point towards “Crossworlds” actually inferring more towards being a smashup of all previous Sonic Racing games (yes, ALL) in one, especially with vehicle types.”If it’s a mash-up of all of them then he should be able to run through the course like in Sonic R!The state of plays have been really interesting for me as a Nintendo fan!A) sometimes we get the Soul Reaver/Lunar collections!B) sometimes we get Concorde lolEither way I’m having fun!@nessisonett Agreed, it was a huge backwards step. Imagine the next Smash Bros only features a small roster of Mushroom Kingdom characters. There would be uproar and rightly so.I wonder who the dev is. Sumo did a great job with Racing Transformed, but they just had big job losses which I wouldn’t expect with this on the horizon?@Clyde_Radcliffe now THAT would be an option.Hopefully it’s more like SEGA All Stars racing with lots of characters from other IP.@Clyde_Radcliffe call me crazy but ive wanted another take on sonic r forever this game is really starting to excite me@ScalenePowers i had a great time at last year’s February state of play as thats when they announced sonic x shadow, and now it seems as if we’ll be getting a proper reveal of sonic racing, so im really getting my sonic fan bang for my buck lol!@Sonicka Those screenshots do seem to point to that portalling to different tracks concept too. One of them had one of those big rings at the end, and the on screen map didn’t show any kind of loop.@Jayenkai the guy just believes in a fair game.@N00BiSH Maybe he should relegate himself to being the Lakitu of Sega Racing. If you choose to play as Sonic, it’s your job to keep rescuing all the drivers that veer off course.@Sonickasimply leap between different acts/worlds from each game series (like Storybook / Lost World / Boost / Classic / Adventure / Movie / etc…)Ooooh, I like your thinking there.@Anti-Matter Sega can do what they like. Hate in capitals isn’t exactly mature.I honestly just hope to get Miku and some Yakuza characters on here. Been loving the small lil cameos in the Monkey Ball Series so why not bring that tradition here too@Jayenkai it’s called a handicapAll-Stars Transformed x Sonic Riders with monster trucks and a bit of Rift Apart. Could go hard.Seems like Nintendo needs to up their ante with the next Mariokart. . .and perhaps a new Fzero.@batmanbud2 that’s hilarious. Don’t get it twisted – CrossWorlds looks pretty good – but let’s be real: the next Mario Kart is absolutely going to trample all over that one(mostly in terms of sales).Shinobi is coming to Switch as well.Wowsers! Now that was a trailer. So basically this is the next evolution on Transformed, incorporates the gear from Riders as a Vehicle type, AND (as we suspected) you do portal to different tracks and worlds mid race… and better yet – this gets mixed up as well.I’m personally not that bummed out on losing the other SEGA IP from TRANSFORMED, but I am excited that they are doing what Team Sonic Racing failed at… which is finally having a larger variety of zones, areas, acts, levels from across the entire franchise. Seeing stuff like Metal Harbour from Adventure 2, the Dinosaur and Pirate worlds from Secret Rings, or Chao Park is all the right kind of things I like seeing.Sign me up for the beta playtest! Yes indeeed!I don’t understand why people like this game? everything looks generic and slow.I clearly spoke too soon… The press release actually states characters from other SEGA properties will be in this game as well!https://x.com/saac_news/status/1889818015069511715?s=46Not only that but Iizuka’s statement on the game:“ In Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, not only did we want to introduce the innovative idea of racing through different worlds as you warp through the Travel Rings, but we also wanted anyone who had fun playing our previous Sonic Racing games to really enjoy this title, so we took a lot of elements from those past games and incorporated them. We included the Extreme Gear from the Sonic Riders series as well as the Transform feature from the All-Stars Racing series, making it a great culmination of all the Sonic Racing series games to date. I hope everyone really enjoys Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.”
– Takeshi Iizuka, Creative Officer, Sonic Team”I gotta hand it to Sonic Team, they’ve been pretty good at listening to fan feedback over the last few years.Having the After Burner stage from Transformed be in the game with a couple Sonic OC’s shoved in is objectively funny. Hope the Nights into Dreams stage gets the same treatment.
Otherwise, the game looks okay, I can tolerate the somewhat generic theme if it plays good, and I think the alternate vehicle types will give enough variety.
Sega does need to get this out somewhat quickly though, I can’t imagine it doing too well against the new Mario Kart in the holiday season.
Edit: Nvm I guess there are other Sega characters too. Odd that you wouldn’t announce that in the trailer but I have a feeling at least a few characters will be tied behind one of the fifty bonus editions that Sega likes to do with their games now.@Sonicka Oh, gosh… That will be instant HELL NO from me to add other SEGA IP characters in Sonic Racing games. I will just stick with my Team Sonic Racing PS4 and called it a day.OMG the transform mechanic is back. I’m probably getting thisI really hope this one is actually good.@Anti-Matter Yes, stick with the worst game in the series over something so shallowAnyways!I’m hoping Extreme Gear will be the most technical out of all of the rides. I absolutely loved the original Riders, and I want the game to treat its sense of style with respect. I don’t care if it’s too hard for a “kids game”. It should be an option for the adults who want more difficulty out of their racing gamesNice, so this is basically Sonic Racing Transform without all the Sega All-Stars. Hopefully it runs well on Switch 1. Nice that they are embracing the travel ring (the ring that transport Sonic and friends from one location to another) from the Sonic live action movies.@Serpenterror Hardware issues should be irrelevant by the time the Switch 2 hits60fps or bustHonestly looks pretty good.@N00BiSH oh, I’m well aware of that, but I did enjoy Transformed a lot, so I’ll be looking out for this.@Anti-Matter fan of Smash Bros? I genuinely don’t really understand the problem, just choose not to play as those characters if it’s an issue.@JakedaArbok Actually, it’s Metal Harbour from Sonic Adventure 2 and not afterburner that’s this is based on (but I TOTALLY see it as well).Let’s go, my favorite Sonic character Vector is confirmed playable@Sonicka I don’t even like smash bros games.Love Sonic Racing. Stood out among spme new IPs that looks so similar.Looks fun enough! I’ll keep an eye on it; hopefully it turns out great and not just good.I love these game but something seems slightly off. I cannot put my finger on it.Game looks cool, and nice that the extreme gears are back even though they are seemingly more of a gimmick now then actual alternate vehicles unless I missed something. When I saw the dinosaurs Cruis’n Blast came to mind immediately. Man, now I want a sequel…Oh we’re talking about Sonic Racing? Got it.Yeah I think I will like it.@Serpenterror They won’t scratch the Switch version, that’s likely to be the best selling version..Looks great based on the trailer and even more so the additional information mentioned here in the comments, definitely looking forward to it!Looks like a cool idea to have kind of mix and match circuit parts throughout races … I’d be affraid to get tired of them much quicker though since they just keep on coming back anytime.Unfortunately never been a fan of Sonic and the characters don’t appeal to me either, so I probably won’t be trying this anyways.Well, this is one of my favourite genres ever. Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is more fun than Mario Kart 8. Team Sonic Racing is great in spite of a few weird decisions and shortcomings. I hope that this new entry has the best of both. I love that we’ll be racing in vehicles across land, sea, and air, the best part of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, better done than in Mario Kart and more similar to Diddy Kong Racing.I played a lot of the Steam version of All Stars Racing Transformed but I couldn’t tolerate the Wii U or 360 versions. I suspect the switch version of this will be similarly disappointing. Might try this on Series X. (I think I played the Steam All Stars Racing Transformed for over 300 hours which is a lot for me I enjoyed it much more than Mario Kart 8 which I played quite a bit on Wii U and then bought but hardly touched on Switch).@Anti-Matter It didn’t stop All Star Racing or Transformed, I think it’s cool to 18+ IP characters on kids games, it’s not like it’s gonna become twisted metal or something, it really reminds of ratchet and clank rift apart with the different world hopping, this game actually looks fun!@Anti-Matter Also don’t swear!@h3s Same here. I have the Wii U version but I haven’t touched it since I have the Xbox version, that is 60fps on Series X, unfortunately still same resolution. I had much more fun with this than with Mario Kart 8 on Wii U and Switch.A good thing about Team Sonic Racing on Series X is that it’s 4K and 60fps with a few frame drops on Xbox One X, but perfectly smooth on Series X. The PS version was never 4K.After my experience with Switch ports of racing games (Crash Team Racing, Team Sonic Racing…), I’m sure about getting this for Series X and not Switch. This looks like a hi-res version of an old game. There was not a lot in there to get me excited. Can’t wait to play this (and all other games released after April) on Switch 2 👍😅 Show CommentsLeave A CommentHold on there, you need to login to post a comment…Nintendo Talks About Future Switch Support Ahead Of Switch 2 Launch”We would like to continue releasing new titles”Metroidvania ‘Chronicles Of The Wolf’ Takes A Few Cues From Castlevania IIAh-woooooo!Metroid Prime First 4 Figures ‘Samus Phazon Suit’ Sneak Peek, Pre-Orders Open SoonDon’t miss itSonic Racing: CrossWorlds Adds Characters From “SEGA Universes”Update: IGN has an exclusive preview upLunar Remastered Collection Physical Release Will Not Be Up For Pre-Order (North America)You’ll have to wait until releaseGame ProfileTitle:Sonic Racing: CrossWorldsSystem:Nintendo SwitchAlso Available For:PS4, PS5Publisher:SEGARelease Date:Nintendo SwitchWhere to buy:Pre Order on Amazon
