Snow is in Charlotte’s forecast this week: Here’s how much could fall – WBTV
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – The snow drought in Charlotte is likely coming to an end this week, with measurable snowfall expected for the first time in nearly three years.“Measurable” snow is one-tenth of an inch; however, there is a good chance the Charlotte area could get more than that as the weather system moves in Friday evening into Saturday morning.Talk of snow has many people across the Carolinas wondering how much could fall. WBTV’s team of meteorologists have been tracking the system for several days now, and forecast Charlotte will receive anywhere from 1-3 inches.“This is going to be a quick-mover,” chief meteorologist Al Conklin said Wednesday morning. “I don’t think anybody ends up with six, eight, 10 inches of snow out of this. If you get anything, it’s more likely going to be in that one to three range.”Conklin said the “best” snow will likely come Friday evening – starting around 5 o’clock – before snowfall becomes more of a wintry mix overnight, and then moves out of the Charlotte region by daybreak Saturday. One thing that bodes well for snow-lovers is the fact that because temperatures leading up to Friday have been so cold, any snow that falls will stick and won’t immediately melt away.“So many times what’s been sort of the kibosh on the snow here is that the days leading up to it are in the 50s,” Conklin said. “That’s not the case this time. The nights are really, really cold…teens, for the most part, some low 20s, and the highs are only low to mid-40s [Wednesday], low 40s at best [Thursday]…a lot of us won’t get out of the 30s. And then starting really cold Friday morning. And then as soon as the day starts, the clouds will move in. So that’s a perfect setup for snow.”Data Wednesday morning indicated that areas north and west of Charlotte and I-85 could see an inch or two more than the Queen City, while places south could wind up with only an inch of snow or less.“If you’re watching from, say Lancaster, Wadesboro, Rockingham, Monroe…you’re maybe in that sloppy inch,” Conklin said. “You might not even get there. One of the areas that we’re going to be a little bit concerned about down there in that region is because there could be more freezing rain, so ice could become more of an issue down that way.”Because of the potential for sleet and freezing rain, there is a chance some communities could deal with a tenth to a quarter of an inch of ice on Saturday morning. That could cause some issues on roads, and any wet roadways could then refreeze Saturday night and create more ice Sunday morning.People living across the Charlotte region can stay tuned to WBTV both on air and online for the latest updates, and can also download the free WBTV First Alert Weather app to keep up with the forecast.Full Forecast: Chance for snow still in Charlotte forecast as temperatures stay coldWatch continuous news coverage here:Copyright 2025 WBTV.
