GuestGuestLogin | Sign UpNintendo LifeGuestLogin or Sign UpOG Switch dock requires 39WAnother day, another ‘Switch 2’ leak, folks! This one comes from respected accessibility/cultural consultant Laura Kate Dale, who has posted what looks to be a fresh image of the upcoming successor’s dock.Dale states that the image is from a trusted source, and although it doesn’t show a great deal in terms of the actual design of the dock, it does include some information on the input and output voltage. Visible on the dock itself, the text states that the input voltage is 20V, while the output voltage is 15V. By comparison, the Switch OLED dock states that both the input and output is 15V.In addition, Dale says that the new console will likely ship with a 60W charger. This is a significant leap over the requirements of the current Switch dock, which accepts chargers of 39W. The clear implication with this is that the original Switch charger probably won’t be compatible with the upcoming Switch 2, and this information also corroborates what Reddit user ‘NextHandheld’ told The Verge a few weeks back.It’s not clear at this time why the input voltage is higher with the upcoming successor, but our theory is that it may be to account for additional accessories plugged into the alleged additional USB slot on top. We can’t say for sure until Nintendo itself reveals more information, mind.Not the most butt-clenchingly exciting leak in the world, we know, but it’s a bit more information to chew on while we await an official reveal from Nintendo. We’ve also recently seen what looks to be a final build model of the left Joy-Con, complete with a new mysterious optical sensor. Some have been hypothesising that this might mean the Joy-Con could be used as a mouse.Expect lots of PS4 portsBlack and blue, not white and goldImagine the possibilitiesWhat are your thoughts on this latest nugget of information on the ‘Switch 2’? What do you think that extra voltage is for? It comes with a charger?
You dont have to buy it seperately like the 3DS XL/New 3DS/New 3DS XL?
WOW!!!
I’m no expert, but I’d say it makes sense for a more powerful system and even more so with potential additional accessories plugged into it as mentioned by the article to have higher requirements such as these.Of course and as usual, waiting for official confirmation to be completely sure!Those are some sizeable vents. Does this mean we get a fan inside the dock this time? Please, for the love of all things good and holy, keep it quiet and efficient, Nintendo.According to the recent leaks, the Switch 2 should be revealed tomorrow. Ehhh….Laura Kate Dale – “Don’t expect anything else from me”In before she breaks that promise when the same source supplies her with another “verifiable” Switch 2 image a few days from now.Laura’s promises count for nothing. Many years ago she promised not to publish any Switch 1 leaks ahead of a Direct. She of course broke that promise and tweeted them regardless to boost her online profile. (the leaks turned out to be false)Those screws sticking out and that one on the base at an angle look really scruffy build quality!Next you’ll be telling us they’ve somehow miraculously made this new Switch ‘more powerful’ than the old Switch or something equally implausible :I@Rooty Now now, let’s not go mad.I’ve got the power. At this rate the only thing for N to reveal will be the cardboard box the thing comes in 🤣🤣🤣As Spider-Man once said, “With great power, comes great stability”.The leaks have turned into a very steady stream. I don’t even think the ninjas can plug this up. Just show the console already Nintendo, hiding your hand is getting frustrating and tiresomeIt’s gonna be a hoss, that’s why.Oh no not 60w. People really scraping the barrel to get their piece of clout from this. Nintendo says nothing because everyone is doing the marketing for them. This has spread better than any paid effort ever could.It doesn’t seem wise for a ‘respectable’ consultant to leak information. Neither is publicising it.I honestly think Nintendo are just trolling us at this point. Like there’s no no reason whatsoever not to just announce the damn thing. Losing credibility by just letting all these ‘leaks’ come and go.To power its sub ps4 rendering NOT does it ship with the solvents being sniffed by its hatersNot to be a killjoy but these rampant leaks and speculation have seriously hurt my hype. This is the least hyped I’ve ever felt for a new Nintendo system. I’m just looking forward to the games and nothing more. Nintendo has waited too long.@Bunkerneath Still mad about them excluding a $10 charger all these years later, huh?Maybe we’ll get an IR sensor bar at some point afterall 🤞Liars gonna lie.@Dev1024 Me too. I like Nintendo Life because usually they ignore this stuff but even they’ve gotten involved. But I do understand that at this point it’s not even possible to wilfully ignore the leaks because they are plastered everywhere!Id say that docked it will have higher power consumption than the OG Switch and on top of this while playing it also needs to be charging the battery too so need to take that into accountOh and on the USB port on top – could that just be a development kit we’re seeing? Developers could be using that port for uploading their game builds onto a unit for testing and we could see that port missing from the consumer modelsHopefully Switch 2 can still be charged with the old Switch power bricks even if they can’t power it to play on tv so people can still play in handheld while charging. Wonder if the old Switch will fit in the new dock and charge so we don’t need both for charging?Any day now, Nintendo. Any day.@Dev1024 I understand what you are saying as they are relentless, I am getting bored of it too. I feel that when the actual reveal comes then the excitement will come back and this will become irrelevant.@Bret What does the price matter? The basic expectation you have of any electronic device that works off a specific charger is that it’ll come with said charger. Even devices that run on batteries tend to ship with batteries.This is what I would bet on, 60/65W quick charging.@dew12333 If there’s some Pokemon footage then I’ll jump through the roof Probably correct. My old Legion Go handheld have 65W charger.Watts up with that? I mean watts up with that. Like a lotta watts.Ahhh i see, the old commercial will return “Nintendo now you are playing with POWER!” 😂https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6KOlC393lo&pp=ygUdbm93IHlvdSdyZSBwbGF5aW5nIHdpdGggcG93ZXI%3D60w?Steamdeck only uses 45w. Gotta be more to this. Quick charging does make the most sense.Another leak that is obviously super fake.I really don’t like that person so I’m choosing to dismiss her nonsense. Sorry not sorryeveryone and their grandma has a “switch 2” at this point lmaoConsidering portable PCs such as GPD Win 5, AYA Neo, and ROG Ally all support around 60W dock, it make sense that the Switch 2 dock could use the same especially since it’ll be more powerful than the Switch 1. Steam Deck only use 45W for charger but had support for 60W via its dock too so likely the Switch 2 will be similar via the dock like all of themOh my, that’s curious.
For those who don’t know basic electricity, you calculate power consumption by Power=Volts*Amps.
Devices generally list the maximum volts/amps they are designed to work with. In reality the voltage is generally stable and determined by the power supply, while amperage is adjusted as needed by whatever a given device is doing. It is rare for an electrical device that isn’t something like a toaster to actually draw its dill rated power for an extended period of time.
So the dock accepts 20Volt*3Amp=60 Watts, but then only spits out 15V*2.8Amp=42 Watts.
So, somehow the dock itself is expected to draw 18 watts of power.
The original Switch dock lists an input of 15V*2.6A=39W and an output of 15V*2.2 W=33W.
Which means the original dock itself is rated to use no more than 6 watts at any given time, which it uses for its few simple functions of running the USB ports, the power LED, and video out.
Here’s the fun part:
The Switch, at the absolute most (running an intense game with a discharged console/joy-cons), barely uses 17 watts. (You can only approach the full 40-watt rating by plugging some USB devices into the system so that they’re draining power too).
So here we have a DOCK ALONE that is rated to use the full power consumption of the original Switch, presumably have ~15-20 watts of the power budget reserved for its USB ports, and ~25-27 watts left over for the Switch 2 proper.I will temper my expectations, but I now FULLY believe the Switch 2 dock has substantial onboard computational power. This could mean any combination of the below:
1. The dock has a CPU/GPU onboard that will result in superior performance when docked.
2.The dock can wirelessly communicate with a Switch console to facilitate dual-screen gaming like the Wii U, with the dock doing a whole bunch of work on its own.
We’ll see.I guess it will all be confirmed during the supposed Nintendo Direct on 8 January. 🤣For those unaware, a Direct on that date was a strong rumour.Okay dude, save some details for the Nintendo Reveal! The one thing I hope the Swiitch has when it comes to the power source/AC adapter is the box to not be on the plug.@StewdaMegaManNerd The countdown was for a Xenoblade trailer. Misconstrued as Switch 2 news.@KociolekDoSyta
@rta
If it was for quick charging then the power output would also be rated near its 60W power input, but the power output shown in that picture is 42W, higher than the original Switch’s 33W to be sure, but that only covers 9Wof the 21W increase to the power budget. The new dock itself is eating up a full 18 W, the same as the maximum power draw of the original Switch console.
That power is being used for something, what could it be?I’ve been happily consuming every Switch 2 leak to this point but I gotta say, I didn’t get a high from this one. Just no dopamine at all. I think I’ve developed a tolerance@nukatha I have no idea, I’m just shooting at 60/65W QC. They’re all rumours, so I’m spreading mine heheh.I actually believe that the dock itself this time around will have some CPU/GPU unit inside, like you wrote. Upscaling?There will actually be nothing left to reveal at this rate. Nintendo are just gonna shadow drop a trailer with some games and a release date and be like “happy now? Ya bloody vultures”@Baker1000 I mean, I get what you’re saying but Nintendo was never going to reveal what the voltage is or what the motherboard looks like. The potential mouse functionality and the magnetic joy-con are the only things leaked so far that Nintendo would show off in a presentation/trailer.@Orpheus79V Okay, that makes a lot more sense.Removed – unconstructive feedback@nukatha I believe the output may be with regard to the combined output of everything external to the dock. Take for instance the Switch dock. Your numbers show 39W input and 33W output. The Switch itself only pulls 18W when docked and charging all batteries, meaning there is 21W to account for. By my understanding, each USB port on the dock is rated at 5V 1A for 5W each. There are 3 of them, so the combined output of docked Switch and USB ports matches the output you mentioned. So it’s much like what you had, except the USB ports are not part of the remaining 6W.But then again, the Switch OLED dock stats both input and output are 39W, so I dunno…..Haha, if I clarify that I’m using sarcasm, does that let my post slide?Something to worry about later, not now. Let’s see what the console wants to do with those 60 watts first.It’s still massively less than the original PS4. Literally 99.9% believes in the “leak” now so forget that with that “Switch 2” is even close to a PS5, or a PS4 Pro or even a PS4. It will be below Xbox One and it will still be a huge upgrade over the original Switch.So many people will get disappointed so fast when Nintendo unveils it for real like with Switch when everyone (99.9%) believed in all those faked “leaks” about NX being more powerful than PS4 despite being a handheld. That term hybrid console never existed before the Switch reveal. So everyone (99.9%) thought that it was a pure handheld after that infamous “leak”, that oval one.I can’t wait to see and feel everyones reaction when this “hype cycle” occurs again when Nintendo announces the codename for their next console in april/may and revealing it for real in late summer to early autumn, and finally releasing it on nov-2025.Nintendo announced the code name “Project Reality” like 2 years before its release in NA/Japan and 3 years before in Europe. This can happen again.It’s going to be a reverse Wii U and the Switch will cast to the dock and allow two screen play. Maybe we will even get a Nintendo Land 2?I wonder what is the reaction from Nintendo HQ when somebody keep revealing the leaked information about Switch 2 from every aspect.AI created imagery sure looks real.New joy con images just leakedhttps://famiboards.com/threads/future-nintendo-hardware-technology-speculation-discussion-st-new-staff-post-please-read.55/post-1515219Edit: could be dummy prints, but they still might closely resemble the real thing!@Bunkerneath Here in North America the 3DS XL actually came with a charger.I tell you hwatt, I am shockedPuns aside, if the Switch 2 is based on 8nm Ampere like all the rumours suggest, it’s likely the extra power (contingency) is due to the power challenges with that node. See Gamers Nexus deep dive on Ampere transient spikes from ~ 3 years ago for context. Of course to blame the node alone isn’t telling the full story, but either way, just because it’s “rated” to draw X power doesn’t mean it will.What is the point of these people leaking stuff, like what do they get out of it and why can’t they just wait for information to come out officially?@Dirty_Croc Now You’re Playing With POWER! NINTENDO POWER!SWITCH 2 CONFIRMED!!!It’ll be used to power the Switch 2’s Bitcoin mining function.Seriously though, as a person who charges his Switch almost exclusively on the dock, this shouldn’t be an issue, as I assume the charger will be bundled with the new dock.@Ralizah I don’t disagree, I just think it’s wild to still be all twisted over it ten years later. The OG Switch came with a charger. Every single Nintendo console ever released except the New 3DS came with the necessary components to charge/use it.@Bret Which is why it stands out so much historically, because it was so egregiously greedy and weird of them. I just took it as him goofing on that.
