Random: This Super Mario 3D Land Mod Makes Us Long For A Switch Port – Nintendo Life
GuestGuestLogin | Sign UpNintendo LifeGuestLogin or Sign UpLookin’ good! Can you believe it’s been nearly 14 years since Super Mario 3D Land launched on the 3DS? Yeah, it’s making us feel pretty old too, don’t worry. With no sign of a potential Switch port in the immediate future, we’ll have to make do with the original 3DS version for now, but fear not, because a modder by the name of Cyboo has launched a new mod that might just extend your enjoyment that little bit more (provided you have the means to access it, of course).Dubbed Super Mario Expedition 2, the mod adds in a brand-new world to explore, and honestly, watching the above trailer, we actually had a hard time distinguishing the levels from Nintendo’s own curated stages. That’s a good thing in our eyes and demonstrates that Cyboo has focused more on good foundational mechanics over indulgent gimmicks. The download link can be found via the YouTube page in the above video, with the mod applicable for use in both Citra and the 3DS itself. If you search through Cyboo’s previous videos, you’ll also find a download link for the first iteration of Super Mario Expedition, just in case you want even more. It’s making us genuinely yearn for a Switch port, but we reckon it’s unlikely we’ll get one anytime soon. Heck, if Nintendo is willing to remaster Donkey Kong Country Returns for a second time, then we’re not sure if Super Mario 3D Land is particularly high on its list of priorities. The golden era of stereoscopic 3DIt’s like Mario’s jumping right at meLet us know in the comments below if you’ve opted to give this mod a try. What do you make of it? Would you like a Switch port of Super Mario 3D Land?[source youtube.com]About Ollie ReynoldsNintendo Life’s resident horror fanatic, when he’s not knee-deep in Resident Evil and Silent Hill lore, Ollie likes to dive into a good horror book while nursing a lovely cup of tea. Easily one of the best final boss sequences in the series with the chase.I thought it was a great game, would be fantastic being able to replay it!I wish we got 3D Land bundled with 3D World on the Switch. Then again, we got Bowser’s Fury, soooooo…3D Land ranks really high on my personal list of Mario platformers. Very high – and although I’d never claim it to be the best, it might be the most fun (but I’ve yet to give Wonder a good go yet). The mod looks great.Pretty cool mod, I’ll play it myself or at the very least watch others playing it for sure at some point – fingers crossed 3D Land will eventually come to Switch and/or more likely Switch 2 (let’s be honest, we got Country Returns now instead of anything else just because of the Super Nintendo World expansion)!I was just thinking I might replay 3D Land in between finishing DQIII and before xenoblade x comes out. I’ll need a good pallette cleanser in between those 2.@abbyhitter For real! 3D Land raised the bar for final Bowser fights moving forward and that needs to be recognized more.3D Land is easily the most neglected 3D Mario, somehow even more so than Galaxy 2, but it has some fantastic levels and the 3D effect was amazing. I still remember that one level in which we drop down hundreds of feet to land on mushroom trampolines. It made my stomach drop!Super Mario 3D Land holds a special place in my heart. It is the game I was able to convinve my best friend to play. She’s not a gamer by any means, but she did manage to beat some levels without much trouble. She was happy and forgot about her major problems while she was playing. Not only the final Bowser fight was impressive, the song that plays in that Bowser’s Castle fills you with a sensation that you know what’s coming yet you feel a little nervous. If Super Mario 3D World is my favorite 3D Mario, Super Mario 3D Land is my absolute second favorite. I just wish 3D World had an orchestral version of Super Mario 3D Land Main Theme.Mario Galaxy 2, Mario 3D Land, New Super Mario Bros, New Super Mario Bros U, New Super Mario Bros 2The next collection for 70 bucks right there.Take my money.@MJF New Super Mario Bros U has already released on Switch. Could replace it with the Wii game.Ah, the 3DS is so awesome! SM3DL was my favorite 3DS title. Also, I really loved what Club Nintendo was during this era, Wii/3DS/WiiU. In recent years, Nintendo, I think, has put most of that Club Nintendo prize creativity into their available-24/7 merchandise. There, they even sell the Nintendo Hallmark Christmas tree ornaments.I loved 3D Land! So much better than any of the recent side scrolling Mario games, including Wonder ☹️3D Land was MUCH more fun, compared to 3D World.
Plenty of 3DS games, I wish was added to the Switch library.
No need for a remaster, just release it as it is, rendered in 1080p.Hot take: this game is significantly more fun than 3D World.@StewdaMegaManNerd Tell that to my ex…3D Land is kind of underrated in my opinion, when compared to other Mario games. Same goes for 3D World actually. I’d buy a Switch port in a heartbeat.Much better game than 3D World, the levels are much tighter because they don’t have to accomodate for four players.Watch Nintendo take this down so it doesn’t “interfere” with their 70$ port of 3d land to the switch that adds literally no new content and has certain visual effects missing from the original version and a bug that makes the game impossible in multiplayer💀@Uncle_Franklin Both have their strengths I feel. Land has the tighter level design but World has the stronger personality and ideas in terms of its level theming and mechanics.IMO 3D Land and 3D World are both great in their own ways. I do think I prefer 3D World overall, though I’d say 3D Land has a better main theme song than 3D World does. I’m glad to see love for 3D Land in here. I remember it fondly as one of my favorite Mario games but I was surprised to find it scoring lower on a lot of lists.Cool and all but when will Nintendo fans learn that Nintendo threatens to sue and/or takes down anything that has to do with fan work or modding of their properties lolThis was the game that got me back into Nintendo after a decade long break. I picked up a great deal on a second hand 3ds with games and this was the first I played. I fell back in love immediately and remember thinking “Nintendo still has the magic”. The whole 3DS system was charming as heck, all the little apps too. Yes it was a gimmick, but a very good one. Fond memories of this one.@HotGoomba Bowser’s Fury was good, but I’d still take 3D Land over it.@JohnnyMind A new Donkey Kong would’ve been a little more exciting, but such is life.Sure hope the Switch 2 brings some upscaled 3DS ports. I’d throw my money so fast at 3D Land, Link Between Worlds, Samus Returns, Fire Emblem Origins, etc.I never understood why 3d Land is such a masterpiece to me but 3d world which is in paper a bigger better 3d land is such a bore for me to play through. I would LOVE a switch hd remaster of 3d land!@StewdaMegaManNerd To be fair, wouldn’t make much sense to release a new Donkey Kong on Switch at this point, better keep it for Switch 2 instead.Meh, 3D World was fine for the 3DS, but it’d be a bit dull and simplistic on the Switch 2. It really needs its Bowser’s Fury moment to reinvigorate the gameplay if they’re going to bring it back. A straight port for $60 is going to feel like another ripoff. It was well worth $40 on the 3DS, but $60 on the Switch 2? Yeah no.I absolutely adore 3D Land! I bought an Ice White 3DS with this game, fantastic as far as I’m concerned.@Bolt_Strike ideally, I’d like it if they repackaged it alongside Galaxy 2 in an updated version of 3D All-Stars(with none of the FOMO). But that’s a pipe dream. My second favorite Mario platformer. I’d like an excuse to replay it, but since I’m one of the apparent minority who really enjoyed the 3DS’s 3D, I might prefer to just go back and play it there.@MJF “You can have them…for $60 each. No QoL improvements. For a limited time of six months. Good day, sir. I said good day!” – Nintendo, probably.I like 3D Land plenty but it feels like it would be an especially hard game to bring myself to drop $60 on. The actual game itself is just like a couple hours long and then you’ve got an absolute ton of transparent padding between the mountain of remixed levels and having to play all of them as both Mario and Luigi despite the game having barely any mechanical differences between the two of them.Only ways I could really see a port being worth it are if they didn’t charge full price or if they added a substantive side mode and even then it’d still just feel like a more stripped down, hollowed out version of 3D World.Holy moly, I would NOT have known this wasn’t the actual game if I didn’t read the article. I was watching going, “What exactly is “modded” here?” Mind blown.Yeah I had a LOT of fun with the original 3DS version back in the day. I still have my copy and now I want to play it again. I was pretty close to 100% it before I put it down.@Moonlessky I kind of felt the same, but I think it was largely due to nostalgia for me, even though I only played 3D World a few years after 3D Land. I also prefer 3D Land’s soundtrack. But overall, I think the overall style of both games works best with 3D Land as that was for a handheld, where a full fledged 3D Mario wouldn’t have worked as well.@Bolt_Strike I think your post exposes a problem that we can all agree on: these games sound way too similar. We might still get it…for 60 clams.Plus tax.Super Mario 3D All-Stars 2 featuring Super Mario Galaxy 2, Super Mario 3D Land and Wario WorldI remember beating the game at work in the bathroom stall. Me yelling yes yes yes take that must’ve been interesting for the other people in the bathroom.@HotGoomba : I’d rather have had 3D Land/World bundled together, with Bowser’s Fury properly expanded and been its own thing.I have beaten all mainline Mario games.Super Mario 3D Land is probably in my top 3! That says a lot!@AlexanderDaniels this would be for the switch 2 and yeah don’t include it in your imaginary game.I already had the wii game in the list, btw@glennthefrog I’d pay 70 easy.day one.@MJF Switch 2 or not, it’s redundant to include it since the system is backwards compatible and the rest of your list is pertaining to titles not available on Switch. You have the DS entry in your list, the wii game is titled ‘New Super Mario Bros. Wii’@Anachronism Right there with ya! Love the 3d effect.
