GuestGuestLogin | Sign UpNintendo LifeGuestLogin or Sign UpThe game was first announced in 2017If you pre-ordered Metroid Prime 4 on Amazon multiple years ago, you might want to check the status of your order.Amazon customers have been receiving emails recently, confirming the cancellation of this item “due to a lack of availability” and providing refunds. A user on the Metroid subreddit, who ordered the title in 2017 (alongside the original announcement), shared the message they received:Metroid Prime 4 – Nintendo Switch, Sold by Amazon.com Services, IncHello, due to a lack of availability, we will not be able to obtain the following item from your order. We’ve canceled the item and apologize for the inconvenience. If you see a charge for the canceled item, we will refund you within 1-2 business days. If you are still interested in purchasing this item, it may be available from other sellers. Please visit the detail page for this item.Fortunately, there are no real concerns here about the state of the game or development – as it seems Amazon is only cancelling original orders. In other words, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond purchases shouldn’t be a problem going forward. In an update during a Nintendo Direct last June, it was confirmed the game would be called Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and announced it would launch on the Switch in 2025.FINALLY!Have you received one of those emails by any chance? Have you pre-ordered Metroid Prime 4 yet? Let us know.About Liam DoolanLiam is a news writer and reviewer for Nintendo Life and Pure Xbox. Wonder when this game will take place story wise. I think I read something but I’m being lazy and not looking it up.@rvcolem1 At the very least it seems after 3 (ok, thats a given) and Hunters.Mines gone! Darn it.A bit of a bummer for those who did purchase it way back when. Especially since there’s a chance this could be a $70 gameYes, either another $70 game or maybe even a total move to a “Switch2” game? Hmm…!Got mine from Best Buy, as of…23:01 Eastern on January 10th…Still live.Well, can’t preorder vaporware. Besides the cancelation is probably due to the game moving over to the Switch 2.My walmart preorder is still there but I’m not holding my breath.Hey nintendo just shoot me a code and I’ll test it for you…My God, I didn’t realize it was originally announced over seven years ago. I know development was started over from scratch at one point, but still. A book should be written about this game’s development.Amazon being Amazon… 🙃Mine got canceled. I was hoping it would last forever since I think it got discounted to like 45$ or something. Not having a ToTK situation again… Likely be $70 and not covering that spread for customers.Weird it took this long, though.I have to admit I was a little sad today when I got the email about my pre-order being canceled, but also a little shocked that it lasted as long as it did!I think at this point the game will become a Super Switch title (I refuse to call it Switch 2)“It’s because it’s moving to Switch 2 obviously!”No. It could release on both, but it will definitely release on Switch at least, even if the Switch release is heavily downgraded compared to the next-gen version of the game. They have specifically stated that BOTW released on WiiU because it had been promised for so long, and they did not want to be responsible for a scenario in which someone bought a WiiU specifically to play “the new Zelda with laser arrows and robots” only to find out that the game would not be releasing for the platform it was originally announced for. This even meant that certain features that the Switch could theoretically handle were not implemented into the game if the WiiU couldn’t handle it, like TOTK’s huge cave systems on the surface. MP4 will be given the same treatment, though I wouldn’t mind graphical and/or performance improvements over the Switch version for the next-gen release. One of the first major Switch games ever announced WILL be a Switch game, whatever else it may be in addition to that. The girls (Nintendo & Amazon) are still fighting, I see. This will be my first game on Switch 2 unless Nintendo reveal another awesome launch game this year. It’s not moving to Switch 2 only. Y’all are being dumb. It was already confirmed for Switch, developed for Switch, and DF said the trailer footage was almost certainly on Switch. Stop being dumb. Also, my theory is that this is gonna be a 70$ game, which is why this is happening, but I could definitely be wrong about that.@Dee123 Really gotta wonder why though.I’ve never made a video game preorder but I guess it’s a big deal to a lot of gaming folks@NinChocolate It’s a big deal when you got that preorder at a 20% discount. Luckily I also preordered it at Best Buy before my 20% gamer discount expired because I thought at least one of them would do this. Hopefully Best Buy still comes through.Awww that’s a shame. That kind of sucks cancelling the orders after people have been this patient for this long. They could have made a big thing about honouring orders after so long.If they took your money when you ordered your money would have doubled by now in a bank! Didn’t know Amazon took money before dispatch of an item on pre orders. How can they charge money before the item is shipped? I thought that wasnt legal in the EU?It’s either canceled automatically because a certain time threshold has been passed, or they were informed the new selling price is going to be a lot higher than they initially charged.@Joekun a discount would be worthwhile yaRemoved – trolling/baitingRemoved – trolling/baitingSince this seems limited to the US at least for now I can’t help but wonder if it’s the same situation as TTYD and Luigi’s Mansion 2 more than a potential $70 starting price even though that’s possible (other than of course this taking so long to come out that I’m surprised pre-orders haven’t been cancelled sooner because of that) – even less convinced that it could be due to it getting also a Switch 2 release as I still doubt we’ll see many if any cross-gen games at least in the traditional sense considering Nintendo barely does that!Had my preorder since 2017. Sad to see it died.@Tasuki The game is still launching on Switch.@silberbauer15 @Enigk Amazon to my knowledge does not charge for pre orders, I believe their policy is to not charge anything until your order is preparing to ship. So nobody actually lost anything from this.
Maybe this will encourage people to not pre order things since it’s obvious that most retailers do not feel beholden to follow through for buying before release in any meaningful way. Just buy things when they actually exist, people. This is the better way.@Tasuki Your comment is completely incorrect. The game exists, it’s just not out. It was just reconfirmed like 6 months ago by Nintendo that it’s coming to Switch, which means it will probably run on Switch 2, but that doesn’t mean the Switch version is cancelled. It’s the only platform MP4 is confirmed for.
@Tendogamerxxx It’s a switch game. It’s releasing on switch. This is simply an admin and legal case of the original item no longer being available, and though it would make sense to transfer it over to the new ‘real’ version of the item, Amazon can’t do this without explicit customer consent – easier to cancel and refund than going through a more bespoke scenarioI’m not too surprised, considering Nintendo hasn’t been allowing Amazon to do pre-order of their games the past year is possible that may or may not be related to this issue.@JohnnyMind They did it with Breath of the Wild. It will come to Switch but I don’t see why it wouldn’t also be coming to Switch 2 or at least be playable on Switch 2. Given the demand, it would be surprising if they didn’t make it playable on their new console. With how little details Nintendo is giving, anything could happen I suppose. What exactly did you mean by the LM2 and TTYD “situation”?@babybilly That’s exactly my point, Nintendo did it with so few games like Breath of the Wild (and let’s be honest, that’s mostly because of the Wii U situation and the Switch not having backward compatibility) that those are the exception, not the rule – Switch 2 will have backward compatibility so Prime 4 will automatically be playable also on it and we could see free/paid upgrades instead of separate rereleases, kind of like Virtual Console games from Wii to Wii U!As for LM2 and TTYD, their preorders got cancelled only at specific retailers including Amazon and exclusively in the US (https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2024/05/paper-mario-the-thousand-year-door-online-pre-orders-are-apparently-being-cancelled-us and https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2024/06/luigis-mansion-2-hd-pre-orders-are-now-being-cancelled-us), that’s why it could be and in my opinion is more likely related to that instead of a $70 starting price and/or a cross-gen release.@JohnnyMind So in your mind, with basically the only new Nintendo game that’s not a remaster that’s been announced & hyped for the entirety of the previous cycle, you don’t think there’s a chance it’s coming to Switch 2?
Lol, okay? Not sure I understand your logic since there’s several parallels to BOTW but I suppose we’ll see soon enough! Also I seriously doubt Nintendo would be willing to just give Switch 2 supporters a free or discounted version. It seems like that was only done on Wii U out of desperation to make more money from their relatively small audience compared to the money Wii & Switch made.@yohn777 I’m not saying that there isn’t a chance, but I’m saying that it’s not as likely considering that:As someone mentioned in a recent article (https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2025/01/yes-were-getting-closer-to-pokemon-day), the first reason applies even more so to Legends Z-A as Game Freak has never done cross-gen releases before – doesn’t mean that it can’t happen, just that people should temper their expectations!@Chibi_Manny That is just in the US specifically.@JohnnyMind Precisely what I think; Amazon US and Nintendo allegedly aren’t getting along since street dates were broken previously. I have no true source on this; this is all internet speculation. Amazon hasn’t even been selling digital eShop cards, which used to be a constant staple. So while I’m not ruling out a price change or a cross system release, I think this is still part of whatever Nintendo has against Amazon since this is far from the first canceled preorder scenario. It does stink for those who preordered at a discount, but they shouldn’t be out any money since Amazon doesn’t bill an account until an item ships. This is just something going on with Amazon and Nintendo – first party games have been not been being listed for sale on there and have been being cancelled when they wereMine was cancelled awhile back.Just as well.I ordered it on June 15, 2017. At the time Amazon was giving a 20% discount on games. So I had locked that in. I found it humorous to watch it get moved out another year each December. Now it’s cancelled and my joy is gone.I have had a pre-order on Amazon since this game was first announced. However, it’s been so long that I’ve since moved. When I went to update the address on the pre-order, it forced me to cancel the pre-order and create a new one. Felt kind of sad to lose a pre-order that was so ancient 😄 (Plus my order back then had qualified for 20% off, which is now lost)Not going to be as exciting as lots of people seem to think: you can only reasonably list an item with the same description etc, if too many changes occur and it’s a new listing you cannot (easily and without explicit consumer consent) move existing orders over onto a new item. They don’t have a non-manual process/system in place for this, so the safest and efficient way to deal with this where consumer consent is not required is to cancel the orders. As an example: if the price changes you can’t reasonably move a customer over onto the newly listed item without asking, which would be a case-by-case endeavour. Much easier to cancel everything and assume at least a fraction will come back to (pre)order the game with the new listing(Much easier to assume incompetence than malice)@JohnnyMind How is MP4 “in quite a different spot” than BOTW? Nintendo has done several cross gen releases, in fact, your example of Twilight Princess is confusing because that game was designed for GameCube, then was ported to Wii & then also ported to Wii U. Very “cross-gen” if you ask me lol, I don’t know what point you’re trying to make with that but Nintendo has released many many games for more than one console. GameCube had bad sales tho & Wii didn’t, so.. I’m not sure why you brought up Twilight Princess if your point was BOTW came to switch only because Wii U sales were bad. Your reasoning is very odd to me. They just released MP Remastered on Switch & on the Wii U they ported all the Wii versions of MP. I’m totally open to either of us being right or wrong but the logic you applied just isn’t making sense to me. We seem to just be talking in circles so let’s just agree to disagree I guessI did pre-order from Amazon way back in the 2010’s. At the time, they were offering a discount on all video game pre-orders for Prime customers. It must not have been a profitable move for them, they ditched that amazing perk pretty quick. It was a source of stubborn pride holding onto that one mighty old pre-order, I’m sorry to see Amazon throw in the towel and admit they have no idea when it’s coming@rvcolem1 prime 4 most likely will take place after super cause the the title beyond hints at that.@yohn777 Makes no sense to bring up the Wii U version of Twilight Princess which came out years later than the other ones, when people mention Prime 4, Legends Z-A etc. being “cross-gen” they usually mean them getting separate releases on two different systems at the same time, not getting a port/remaster/remake years later. And you said it yourself, GameCube had bad sales just like the Wii U and that’s exactly why they released Twilight Princess and Breath of the Wild also on Wii and Switch respectively… again, at the same time!A price hike from $60 to $70 is really an overreaction in this economy where that is the difference of one McDonald’s meal. This isn’t news. Mine was cancelled over 2 years ago.Could be something as simple as preorder was 40 and now Nintendo wants to charge 50 for it.@Ultimapunch Same. Placed mine on November 19, 2017. It’s okay though, I’d rather buy it from someone else anyways.@msvtI doubt it will be completely removed from Switch. Maybe a dual release but not a Switch 2 exclusive.@ibookboyuk The product isn’t even named the same anymore; probably a different sku page@Bumb_Ditch Yeah it’s already been confirmed for first Switch@KingMike Some people are on tight budgets, but yeah if you really want the game you’ll pay for it. Or you could just wait for a sale.@yohn777 They don’t need to release a separate Switch 2 version because the Switch 2 can play it anyway. That said, it probably will say somewhere on the box art that it can “be enhanced further when played on Switch 2”. But it’s probably just higher framerate and cleaner peak resolution. I don’t think they will have two different MP4 skus— that would be confusingThis late in the game, I’d much rather see prime 4 released on our next console with more power. I can wait in Metroid, it deserves the very best.@Antraxx777 How is that confusing? It happened for many Wii/Wii U titles, Switch/3DS titles, DS/Wii titles, the list goes on. Idk why it sounds so insane that Nintendo would release two versions when they’ve done it several times before now, not even including all the porting.Obviously a Switch 2 launch game and exclusive. No mystery here at all.@JohnnyMind @Antraxx777 It feels like there’s a lot more examples than just breath of the wild of games that have gotten released on more than one console simultaneously. Also I’m not sure why it matters that it’s a simultaneous release, it just makes sense that with a premier title that’s been hyped for 8 years already will probably come to all of Nintendo’s “current” consoles, assuming Switch 2 is out around the time Metroid comes out. Doesn’t it seem like it would be more confusing to not release a Switch 2 version? Cause then Nintendo would have to explain to their audience “Oh, no, actually it’s digital only for our new console because it’s a Switch game and you can play those on Switch 2 by going to the digital store!”, or they’d have to put a label that everyone would complain about that says on every physical release post launch “Also plays on Switch 2!”, which I think lots of older people buying the new Nintendo for their kid might not grasp immediately. I don’t know why some people think this is outlandish but it’s not that weird. Microsoft (used to) and Sony do this all the time with their games too. I suppose trying to guess what Nintendo will do is arrogant, I don’t feel that strongly about it but I’m just saying it would make more sense to me if they released it for both consoles.
