By all accounts, Kirkconnell and James were one of the more successful couples to come out of The Bachelor. They stayed together for a long time, anyway, though their time on the show was not without controversy: James, the first Black male lead on the show, was forced to contend with Kirkconnell’s past when photos of her attending an antebellum-themed college party surfaced online. Kirkconnell apologized, the two broke up for a short time, and they ultimately got back together and pursued a heavily documented life as food and travel influencers.If that sounds like fun to you, prepare to be disappointed. Last night on a livestreamed episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast, Kirkconnell told her side of the story to host Alex Cooper, and it was bleak.A post shared by Rachael Kirkconnell (@rachaelkirkconnell)Over the course of a 100-minute interview, Kirkconnell revealed that James blindsided her with the breakup just before she was set to leave Tokyo, where the two had been traveling and creating content together. He also, she claimed, blindsided her with his now infamous breakup post, tagging her on Instagram before she had time to tell her family and friends what happened. The saddest part for me, however, was how she described their life together and what led to their final argument.“I was feeling very overwhelmed; I was trying so hard to find, like, a good dinner spot for us,” she told Cooper of the last night they were together in Tokyo. “I was putting so much pressure on finding a good spot because he cares. This is, like, his career, you know, going to good food spots … Literally every single meal that we would have, we were filming.”A post shared by Matt James (@mattjames919)Aah! Nightmare life. Unfortunately, the restaurant Kirkconnell picked was “not good,” which upset her. “This sounds crazy, but as a food person, I’m trying to make sure that he’s getting good content for our trip and stuff, because I know it’s important to him, and it’s something that we’ll both post about.”Kirkconnell then explained that her upset caused James to get annoyed, and that he broke up with her the next morning. According to her, he said the inverse of the kinds of things you hear on The Bachelor, like “I don’t know if I ever see myself proposing to you” and “I can’t actually see myself married to you.”This poor gal. Kirkconnell was still visibly upset about the breakup, and Cooper tried to assure her that it was not her fault and that she will find someone else. My hope is that it is a quiet, anonymous person who likes to go to restaurants in a normal way.
