Paul Wesley Reveals Which ‘Vampire Diaries’ Storyline “Should’ve Never Made It Out of the Writers Room” – Hollywood Reporter

Could it be that even Paul Wesley was team Klaroline?
While many Vampire Diaries fans loved the romance between his character Stefan Salvatore and Candice King’s Caroline Forbes — also known as Steroline — towards the end of the show, Wesley wouldn’t necessarily agree.
On a recent episode of Hot Ones Versus, the actor was asked by his former co-star — and current Brothers Bond Bourbon co-founder — Ian Somerhalder to choose “one storyline you think should’ve never made it out of the writers room” on the hit show, which ran for eight seasons from 2009-17.

“After Nina [Dobrev] left the show [after season six], they were like: We need to pair Stefan with some romantic partner and then Stefan and Caroline [Candice King] ended up having a wedding and getting married, right?” Wesley responded.
“It was a little forced but it was cute,” Somerhalder confessed before Wesley added, “It was cute.”
While The Vampire Diaries kicked off with a love triangle between Stefan, Elena Gilbert (Dobrev) and Damon Salvatore (Somerhalder), Wesley’s character ultimately ended up with Caroline, going from friends to lovers throughout the supernatural drama. They tied the knot at the end of season eight, shortly before Stefan’s death.
However, Steroline had some competition for fan-favorite onscreen couple. Not only did fans adore Elena and Damon (aka Delena) throughout the show, but the tension between Caroline and Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan) — also known as Klaroline — was also beloved by many.
Last year, to celebrate the hit show’s 15th anniversary, Vampire Diaries co-creator Julie Plec opened up to The Hollywood Reporter about the “very, very complicated dance” of navigating multiple onscreen couples, as well as how Steroline was in the making since season two.
“Building a successful relationship on television is equal parts math, chemistry and then, fan reaction,” she explained. “I decided at the end of season two that eventually Stefan and Caroline would be getting together and that this was the beginning of a long, long, long, long arc for them. I didn’t care how long it took, if it took five years, that the show would end with them together.”
Plec continued, “And then literally one season later, Klaus comes along and without any of us doing anything, other than Rebecca Sonnenshine writing a really great monologue, Klaus, all of a sudden, the chemistry between those two was so palpable that it almost completely derailed the plan to get her and Stefan together.
