Oppo Find N5 launches as the world’s thinnest foldable, and it puts Samsung to shame [Gallery] – 9to5Google

There’s a new leader in foldables, as Oppo is today launching the Find N5 with recording-breaking hardware that we’ve had some time to test out.Cutting to the chase, the Oppo Find N5 is the world’s thinnest book-style foldable, measuring in at 8.93mm when closed, and 4.21mm when opened. That beats the 9.0mm of the Honor Magic V3 by a hair, but is also over 3mm thinner than the Galaxy Z Fold 6.That thin profile is paired with a weight of just 229g, making this foldable just two grams heavier than the iPhone 16 Pro Max.Despite the ultra-thin design, though, Oppo hasn’t held much back.Find N5 is running on top of a 7-core version of the Snapdragon 8 Elite paired with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. It runs ColorOS 15.0.1, based on Android 15, out of the box and packs a 5,600 mAh battery with 80W wired charging over USB-C and 50W wireless charging on compatible AirVOOC chargers. For comparison, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 still has a 4,400 mAh battery, despite the major difference in thickness. The outer display on the Oppo Find N5 is a 6.62-inch LTPO OLED panel using “Nanocrystal glass” while the inner display is an 8.12-inch LTPO OLED panel with a 9.9:9 aspect ratio, just barely taller than it is wide. Oppo’s hinge design drastically limits the display crease, which the company calls “Almost Invisible.”Finally, the camera array includes a 50MP Sony LYT-700 main camera, 8MP ultrawide, and a 50MP telephoto lens for a 70mm equivalent/3x optical zoom. The Oppo Find N5 is launching globally at the same time as it is debuting in China. The foldable will cost $2,499 in Singapore (the region where the launch event was held), which converts to around $1,870 USD. Over the past week and a half, I’ve been able to try out the Oppo Find N5 and I have to say… wow. While the fit and finish is similar to last year’s Honor Magic V3, Oppo should be proud of this device. The generational upgrade from the Find N3, otherwise known as the OnePlus Open, to the Find N5 is staggering to say the least, and it’s not all about how thin it is.The Find N5 packs polished hardware across the board. The matte side rails are grippy enough to where I don’t find it necessary to use a case (though one is included in the box). The outer display pushes right up to the edges, creating a look that foldables have mostly failed to achieve so far. And the inner screen is a truly massive canvas, and one that goes mostly uninterrupted by the display crease. It’s not invisible, but it’s also hard to see, even at off-angles.It also makes going back to my Galaxy Z Fold 6, the foldable I personally purchased last year, look like a cheap knock-off by comparison. Samsung’s deep crease and thick hardware aren’t inherently terrible, but they feel like a ripoff when you see what foldable technology is actually capable of today. On the hardware front, I think the job is done. Foldables are as thin and light as they’ve always needed to, and wanted to be. Going any thinner than this form factor is pushing too far, as this is just barely still comfortable in the hand when it’s opened up. When it’s closed, the device just feels like a typical smartphone. This makes it sting all the more that the Oppo Find N5 is all we’re getting, as a OnePlus Open sequel isn’t coming anytime soon. But what’s clear is that Oppo has set the standard going forward, and it’s going to be interesting to see how the competition responds over the course of this year. I’m still settling into this device as a daily driver, so expect more in a full review in the coming weeks.
