NVIDIA Confirms Only 0.5% RTX 5090 & 5070 Ti GPUs Affected By Missing ROP Units, Replacements For Affectees & Production Corrected – Wccftech

NVIDIA has confirmed that the missing ROP issue only affects a small batch of RTX 5090 & 5070 Ti GPUs and the production anomaly has been fixed.Yesterday, TechpowerUP reported that they discovered missing ROP units on their GeForce RTX 5090 GPU review sample. The tech outlet saw that its ZOTAC RTX 5090 sample was performing slower than the rest of the samples and, as it turned out, the card featured just 168 ROPS versus the full 176 ROPS featured on the RTX 5090 GPU (official spec). At first, it seemed like only one of the manufacturers was affected, but as it later turned out, almost all AIBs were affected by this issue. The missing ROP unit on the NVIDIA RTX 5090 resulted in a 4-5% performance loss in games, and it was also discovered that RTX 5090D GPUs were affected by the same issue too. It wasn’t entirely confirmed if the issue was a manufacturing defect or a BIOS issue, but the former seemed more likely and NVIDIA has now confirmed that it is indeed a production anomaly as shared with us in the following quote:We have identified a rare issue affecting less than 0.5% (half a percent) of GeForce RTX 5090 / 5090D and 5070 Ti GPUs which have one fewer ROP than specified. The average graphical performance impact is 4%, with no impact on AI and Compute workloads. Affected consumers can contact the board manufacturer for a replacement. The production anomaly has been corrected.NVIDIA Rep to WccftechAs per NVIDIA, it’s not only the RTX 5090 and RTX 5090D GPUs that are affected by the missing ROP unit but also the RTX 5070 Ti. We haven’t seen any reports of missing ROPS on the 5070 Ti, but the latter is a very fresh launch. NVIDIA confirms that only 0.5% of the GPUs are affected & they are all missing just one ROP unit, so that’s 8 ROPS in total. The company also states that the average GPU performance impact is 4% and, while this has a small impact on AI and Compute workloads, it is by no means justifiable and users should get the full specifications and performance that they paid for.In that regard, NVIDIA says that affected consumers can contact board manufacturers for a GPU replacement, so in case you’re able to find that your RTX 50 GPU is missing ROPS, you should get a replacement as soon as possible. Now that’s the other issue. Considering just how scarce the supply of RTX 50 GPUs is right now, users might have to wait a long time to get their hands on a replacement. Also, there haven’t been a lot of RTX 5090, 5080, or even 5070 Ti GPUs shipped out, so it’s hard to tell the exact number of GPUs that are missing ROPS. Users can tell so by using GPU-z and seeing the ROP count section to confirm if they have a bad card. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090/5090D features 176 ROPS while the RTX 5070 Ti features 96 ROPS, so any count lower would confirm that you got a bad batch and should go for a replacement. NVIDIA says that the issue was a “production anomaly” which has been corrected, though we wonder why this happened in the first place. Maybe NVIDIA rushed the whole Blackwell RTX 50 launch given just how many issues there are at the moment? Some posts on wccftech.com may contain affiliate links.
