Emilia PerezThere is a dust-up in the film world right now, a conflict pitting viewers, critics and award-voters against each other regarding one film in particular, Emilia Perez on Netflix. The film has racked up loads of nominations and wins so far, and now has been nominated not just for Best Picture at the Oscars, but it is now the most-nominated foreign film of all time, and has tied movies like Oppenheimer, The Fellowship of the Ring and Forrest Gump with 13 total nominations. But it’s confusing, given that critics are mixed on it and many viewers don’t seem to like it at all. The result? If Emilia Perez won, it would be the lowest-scored Best Picture winner since Crash. You can find this via Rotten Tomatoes where Emilia Perez has a 76% critic score and a 28% audience score. It’s the lowest in the crop of Best Picture nominees this year, and as for the audience score, the lowest in eons. That may be the result of a whole lot of different factions downvoting the film for various reasons, but generally speaking, even past all that, it does not seem terribly well-liked, and has become something of a meme among film viewers on social media these past months, and this group seems absolutely baffled that the film keeps landing all these nominations. In terms of those scores:So, as you can see, there are only two winners in 20 years that are below a 90% critic score, and strangely, they’re both in the 70s, nothing is in the 80s. It is also no surprise that as such, Green Book and Crash are probably two of the most controversial winners in the modern era. So will Emilia Perez win? We can now list the scores of those movies to see how different Perez might be:I’m Still HereYes, Emilia Perez won the Golden Globe for Best Musical or Comedy motion picture, and has all these Oscar nominations but my guess would be…no. My picks for a likely winner would be Conclave, The Brutalist or maybe even a dark horse pick in terms of The Substance, which has gotten a lot of buzz heading into the show after Demi Moore’s Golden Globe win. Of course I’m Still Here is the top-rated film on the list. Then again, given how much these voting bodies seem to love Emilia Perez, I wouldn’t count it out.
