Montgomery County reports measles case linked to international travel – 69News WFMZ-TV

Updated: March 4, 2025 @ 10:38 amReporterMONTGOMERY CO., Pa. – “They took the appropriate precautions, they did the appropriate testing,” said Dr. Lorraine.According to the county, people may have been exposed on a China Airlines shuttle bus departing JFK Airport, arriving in North Philadelphia February 25th into the 26th.In addition to the Children’s Hospital on the 26th, the county said people may also have been exposed at True North Pediatrics Associates of Plymouth in Plymouth Meeting on the same date.”The good news is that the vaccine is highly effective against measles,” said Dr. Lorraine.He said droplets can linger for two hours in a space after someone with the virus leaves.Dr. Lorraine said the county maintains fairly good vaccination rates.He spoke about what symptoms come along with measles”Typically, we’ll see pretty high fevers and all the concomitant symptoms that would be associated with that, it can cause seizures if it becomes significantly elevated, cough, shortness of breath. These are all very, very common,” said Dr. Lorraine.He said in Texas there is a spread within a population that is specifically unvaccinated.”Our situation is definitely different. This is essentially a one-off. It was a case of a child who was too young to be vaccinated traveled to an area where measles happens to be endemic and happened to unfortunately contract the disease,” said Dr. Lorraine.Dr. Lorraine said if you suspect you have measles, to seek medical attention and to let the facility you are going to know you are coming.He said the best defense is to be vaccinated.The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Public Health (OPH) have confirmed a case of measles in an unvaccinated Montgomery County child. Reporter
