The contract also reportedly includest two opt-outs.But Bregman joining the Red Sox doesn’t solve all their problems. In fact, it actually creates a couple of “major questions” for Boston to solve, according to MLB insider Jon Morosi. All signs point to Bregman, who primarily played third base during his nine seasons with the Houston Astros, moving to second base for the Red Sox with Rafael Devers already occupying the hot corner. But Morosi doesn’t believe that plan is set in stone yet.“The interesting thing for me is going to be what we hear out of Fort Myers in the coming days about the exact role of Alex Bregman,” Morosi said Thursday on MLB Network. “There’s been a lot of conversation about playing second base, and certainly that’s an option. But you also consider if he were to play third and then Devers becomes the DH or moves across the diamond, perhaps, what that could mean for additional trade possibilities.”Story continues below advertisementBregman has started only two games in his career at second base while he earned Gold Glove honors at third last season. On the other hand, Devers has the most errors at third base in his career among active players. It feels like the Red Sox are leaning toward not overhauling their entire defensive alignment and having Bregman play second, something Alex Cora is very confident that he can do.The other big question facing Boston with Bregman on board is what happens to the path to the majors for its high-end middle infield prospects. It looked like Kristian Campbell, who Morosi compared to two-time All-Star Javier Báez due to the “electricity in his bat,” had a good shot to make the Opening Day roster as Boston’s starting second baseman. But if Bregman takes hold of second, not only for this season but the next three years, the Red Sox will need to find another spot on the diamond for Campbell.Story continues below advertisement“The question I had last night is what does this mean for Kristian Campbell?” Morosi said. “I actually spoke with a scout this week who said he believes Kristian Campbell is one of the top three prospects in the entire sport. That he’s that elite. … There’s a path for Anthony to play in the outfield this year. There’s also a path at some point depending on Trevor Story’s health, etc. for (Marcelo) Mayer or for Campbell to get involved in the club at the major league level this season in particular.”Digital Content ProducerAn award-winning journalist that has covered nearly everything under the sun for over a decade.
