Stone and her band members were headed to Atlanta after a performance the night before in Mobile, as noted in a statement by independent label SRG-ILS. An 18-wheeler struck the van Stone was driving in, causing the vehicle to flip, Stone’s longtime manager Walter Millsap III noted to the Associated Press. “Never in a million years did we ever expect to get this horrible news,” Angie Stone’s children, Diamond and Michael Archer, said in a statement shared by the SRG Group. “We are still trying to process and are completely heartbroken.”Stone was scheduled to perform at the halftime show of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association men’s Championship basketball game on Saturday, as noted by 11alive. The singer was born in Columbia, South Carolina, on December 18, 1961. She began her singing career as one of the hip-hop trio, “The Sequence” in the late 90s. After breaking up in 1985, Stone joined the R&B group “Vertical Hold” in the early 1990s. Throughout her solo career, she was nominated for three Grammy awards and won two Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards.
