Jon Stewart shocked his Daily Show audience on Monday when he cut his hand on a broken mug and continued delivering the monologue while bleeding.
Stewart cut his hand when he smashed a mug while speaking about the prescription drug prices. He moved the hand under the desk after looking at it and said “I might be going to the hospital soon.”
A few minutes later, guests caught a glimpse of the blood when he moved his fingers above the desk. As the audience gasped, he said: “I’m fine!”

The lively moment was part of a longer segment about Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency department, which Stewart mocked by offering his own suggestions on how to cut spending. “How about we just take the $3 billion in subsidies we give to oil and gas companies that already turned billions in profits?” he said to cheers. “How about we just close down the carried interest loophole on hedge funds that’s worth $1.3 billion a year? Oh, how about we stop the $2 trillion we’ve given to defense contractors to build a fighter jet that blows, when everybody knows the next war is going to be fought with drones and… blockchain, whatever that is, holy shit!”
He then moved into condemning the pharmaceutical industry, slamming the Biden administration’s celebrations following their lowering the costs of 10 drugs. “Ten is all of them, right? Because it would be embarrassing if it was a small drop in the bucket, and that the American people didn’t expect that we should negotiate for all their fucking drugs because we’ve already paid for it with our subsidies,” Stewart said, smashing the mug as he finished the sentence.
It’s unclear if Stewart indeed went to the hospital, although a Comedy Central rep said Tuesday that the host is OK. It’s not the first time the host had sustained an on-air injury, once cutting his wrist during a 2011 segment about representative Anthony Weiner.
Tuesday afternoon, The Daily Show posted an “After the Cut” video — which, incidentally, is a catch-all name for bits that don’t make it into an episode, not a specific reference to the accident — of Stewart joking about his injury between segments and footage from his previous on-set mishap.
