The past couple years have radically transformed things in the digital assistant and AI space, and it is clear that Google is all-in on Gemini moving forward. And that means Google is set to finally get down to one assistant on your phone, in your car, and on your other devices: and that assistant will be Gemini. The transition from Google Assistant to Gemini is already underway. Millions have already made the switch and experienced the new, AI-driven features of leveraging Gemini versus the Google Assistant on their phones. Google is now accelerating this transition, with plans to upgrade more mobile users to Gemini in the coming months. Later this year, the classic Google Assistant will be phased out on most mobile devices and removed from mobile app stores. This change will extend beyond smartphones, too. Tablets, cars, and connected devices like headphones and watches will also receive Gemini upgrades. Furthermore, a new Gemini-powered experience is coming to home devices, including speakers, displays, and TVs. While Google Assistant will continue to function on these home devices for the time being, the eventual shift to Gemini is 100% on the way. Google says more details regarding the transition will be shared in the coming months.Since Gemini really hit the scene, this point has felt somewhat inevitable. After all, Google can’t continue to have two voice assistants largely doing the same thing when one of them is clearly better at every single task. The Google Assistant was, in some ways, ahead of its time a bit. With the emergence of generative AI, however, task-oriented assistants aged quickly, and it seems there is no stopping the continued evolution of AI chatbots and services. From being better at understanding language to simply being more helpful in what feels like an infinite number of ways, Gemini is the tool Google needs to be putting in their hardware across the board. Still, it’s a bit sad to say goodbye. This feels like it marks a huge milestone in the Google story, and the Google Assistant has been a big part of things for us here at Chrome Unboxed over the years. I know the time has come for it to go away, but just like I feel with the ending of the Chromecast line, I’m just a tad bit nostalgic and sad.
