Funko Fusion Developer Reportedly Struck with Layoffs Following Disastrous Launch – Push Square

GuestGuestLogin | Sign UpPush SquareGuestLogin or Sign Up10:10 Games loses around 20 peopleLast year saw the release of Funko Fusion, an action adventure based on the popular vinyl figures that line the walls where video games used to be in places like GAME.While the collectable Funko Pop! figures continue to be popular, depicting hundreds if not thousands of characters from modern pop culture, the game was a “complete commercial and critical failure”.Those words come from anonymous sources speaking to Insider Gaming in a report on the messy layoffs that have hit the development studio, 10:10 Games.According to the report and its sources, 19 people have been let go from the team, with some of those affected informed while on holiday. The holidays were apparently encouraged by management, and those that took the advice were still expected to attend consultation meetings, even while abroad. The report adds that the staff affected have received “no real severance package”, being given the “bare legal minimum”, according to one source. This includes notice periods and payment in lieu of unused holiday time. It sounds as though the aforementioned holidays were encouraged in order to reduce the severance payout.Funko Fusion’s poor reception and sales are apparently to blame for the layoffs; 10:10 Games has only secured funding for one more project, meaning that lower-level staff were told there “isn’t enough work to give the whole team”.No official statement has been made about the situation. While the game was indeed widely panned upon release in September of last year, it’s no less a shame to see people losing their jobs. If all that’s said in this report is true, it sounds like the layoffs are particularly nasty in this case. We hope those affected are able to find new work.Did you play Funko Fusion? I tried the PS Plus trial for it and it was dull and just a much worse version of a Lego-style game, and it was also missing the multiplayer aspect that makes those games ideal for younger gamers. What is obviously a shame is for those with no control over the decision making process that led to a bad game being released to be the ones affected as opposed to those in charge that pushed the game to be made in the first place. Hope they can find something else suitable soon. This game looked horrible when it was announced, and my shock at it being a failure is nonexistent.Feel sorry for the folks who did the actual work on this game, but anyone who pinned all their hopes on this thing selling well or even decently was delusional at best.Game just shouldn’t have been made. Releasing against more popular titles, that essentially do the same thing, but better, and are more established, e.g. Lego. It was destined to fail, and the only ones at fault are the people who thought this was worth making, (or at least, weren’t prepared to make it good and market it thoroughly).I hate to see developers lose their jobs, but this game was an absolute travesty. I bought it for my kids with the understanding that we could play together. Nope. Let them play on release day (full price), and after 20 minutes each they both stopped because they absolutely hated it. I thought it couldn’t be that bad and gave it a try. My God it was worse than I imagined and probably the worst game I’ve ever played since I first started gaming in 1978. Want to talk broken? There was no explanation for anything, so I spent hours just wandering around trying to figure out what I was supposed to do. Things that were needed to advance the levels were missing sometimes, so you would have to exit out and start from the beginning with no progress saved. The sound would pop in and out, going completely silent for over 5 minutes at a time. The combat was lame, and if you died you had to have in-game currency to resurrect yourself. Seriously, who thought this was a good idea? Then top if off with every end level boss being completely identical. I can tell you with absolute certainty that this game was never QA’d in any shape or form. I became fascinated with it the way a car wreck is fascinating. But I put it down, gave them a few months to fix the bugs, and when I went back every single level was locked on PS5. Every single one. All I could do was walk around the hub. It took them over 2 weeks to fix it. This is completely unacceptable, and 10:10 games will never see another cent from me for this cash grab broken mess ripoff. It’s the game equivalent of the actual Funko figures in that it’s landfill material. Shame for those losing their jobs but this was a disaster from the top down.I hate Funko Pops, but I wanted to give the game a shot because it included a lot of properties I love. It was truly abysmal. Absolutely one of the most tedious games I’ve ever experienced. It’s mind-blowing that someone during development didn’t recognize how unenjoyable it was to play.I actually like Funko, but I legitimately wondered why this game was made. I would have probably tried it, if they hadn’t used some properties I utterly can’t stand in it.Yeah, it wasn’t great tbh. What, this didn’t set the world on fire!? Perhaps the landfills of discarded funkos will.We have this thing… and we can sell it with unlimited profit growth… Capitalism is baffling.@Steeleye50 Thanks for putting more effort into your comment than the devs did into q&A for the game. I originally wanted this to play with my wife, bought her the Ceylon and everything, but no couch co-op meant no buy. And everything you mentioned after that, just wow. There are so many of these types of games for them to copy, Lego, Disney, Skylanders, I don’t understand how they screwed this up so bad.🤷🏻‍♂️Have you played Lego Horizon? Despite including the couch co-op everything I’ve read made it sound short, pointless and unenjoyable, so I haven’t picked that one up yet either. And I’m still bummed M&L Brothership doesn’t have 2 player. It was a fairly lame couch co-op gaming holiday all around.@rjejr I have not played Lego Horizon for the same reason, as I heard it was underwhelming. I really loved Lego Dimensions and wish they would do something like that again. The main developers for this formerly worked for TT games making Lego games so it’s baffling how bad Funko is. I really could go on and on about it. Like having “cameo” characters such as Chucky or Meghan (real appropriate for a kids game). Once you find them in a secret area, you have to fight them. After beating them they disappear, and they tell you you have to find them again SIX MORE TIMES. So that’s 7 secrets you have to find to unlock just once character. Crazy. Then you have all the bloody parts from movies like the Thing left intact. My daughter and I are really looking forward to Split Fiction next month, early impressions are positive and it looks like a ton of fun. Take care!Sounds like a really horrific event for staff, bare minimum is usually not remotely close to acceptable. Still, I didn’t know this game released. I heard about it and thought it was to be released later this year, but nope. It came out and died. They lost 20 people how do u lose track of 20 adults 😅 Show CommentsLeave A CommentHold on there, you need to login to post a comment…35 PS5, PS4 Games You Should Grab in PS Store’s Planet of the Discounts Sale (North America/Europe)Recommended PS5 and PS4 games going cheap9 PS Plus Extra, Premium Games for February 2025 AnnouncedStar Wars!
