FromSoftware Plans to Flog Characters, Bosses as Elden Ring Nightreign DLC – Push Square

GuestGuestLogin | Sign UpPush SquareGuestLogin or Sign UpSave your coinsElden Ring Nightreign, the new online focused take on FromSoftware’s smash hit RPG, will take the franchise in a very different direction – and that also appears to the case with its DLC.Text uploaded to the release’s Steam page before being swiftly removed mentioned that “additional playable characters and bosses” will be available as DLC.In the past, FromSoftware has built giant expansions for its games like Shadow of the Erdtree, but it sounds like this will be more of an a la carte model, where you can purchase specific characters you want to play as or bosses you want to fight. What’s not entirely clear is how said bosses will work in an online environment, as not everyone on your team may have purchased the content.Rise together, TarnishedThese details are probably still being ironed out, hence why the text has been nuked from the Steam page. But it’ll be interesting to see how Bandai Namco approaches this and what the response from the community looks like – especially as we raised some concerns about the longevity of the release during our recent preview.[source pcgamer.com, via videogameschronicle.com]About Sammy BarkerAs the Editor of Push Square, Sammy has over 15 years of experience analysing the world of PlayStation, from PS3 through PS5 and everything in between. Good on them, they deserve to make ludicrous piles of money(as long as some money filters down to pay rises for general staff) . I do wonder how all the people who champion them as the heroes of the games industry are going to veiw this game though…Sounds lame and boring then. This style of business model is an immediate no buy. This is exactly what I was scared of. I’d love to give From the benefit of the doubt, but this article (and more specifically, the swift removal of the excerpt from the Steam page) is fairly damning.I’ll still likely worship at the altar of FromSoft… but this whole direction/strategy regarding Nightreign just reeks of ‘Big Corpo’.Never in a million years did I envisage From releasing something that would encourage MTX/DLC to yield the privilege of ‘downloadable skins’ (!)I wish From had pooled the time, money, resources into something more akin to their usual quality and output.Your friends will jump and smash in clear air above small wooden sign “boss, see for $1.99″We don’t really have enough information to have a strong opinion either way. It really depends how it is cut up.If the base game is worthwhile on it’s own that’s great. And if they want to sell extra DLC, that could be fine too, but it could also be done badly. This is awful to see. The one franchise that I never thought would go this route finally has. It’s hard for games to go back from that model too, once consumers start to bite it becomes an embedded practice. Hopefully it only affects Nightreign since I’ll never play that game, I’d hate to see it happen to an actual FromSoft title.I will pay to play as Father Gascoigne so I can jump to my death with him as many times as he destroyed me in BloodborneWould love to see the reactions on this if it was a company people didn’t like 👀There’s a cow that needs milking. From Soft do I need to start worrying about you? 🤔😅😭@Czar_Khastik I’ll bet a Swiss Franc or two that Sony will be pedantic enough to keep Bloodborne content exclusive to Playstation. So, $60-to-start? 🤑Adding free additional characters and bosses in updates over time would have been a compelling business model that would make me more excited to play. But paid DLC? Gross. Any enthusiasm for this one that I had left is pretty much gone now.I am a huge From Software fan.But this really looks like a Elden Ring meets PUBG and I am just not feeling it.First title from this group that will not be an insta-buy for me.If my impressions are correct, I hope the folks that do play it have a great time. I just won’t be one of them….Well, it’s a good reminder that From Software is not Miyazaki’s small company but part of a corporation.@ChrisDeku as someone who’s championed them I’ll happily tell you; this game looks absolute dog eggs and I won’t be buying it.@ChrisDeku the thing I fear is that they will go down the rockstar route if this is successful and the games that actually made them famous dry up.Ew, yuk. Fingers crossed that they removed this information from Steam because it is out of date and doesn’t reflect long term plans to gouge their fans, but something tells me that’s not the case.It pains me to say this, but this might be the first From Soft game that I’m just not feeling. I was semi curious, but after seeing some of the early reactions / gameplay from the network test, I really don’t think this one’s for me.My favourite part of their games is exploring at my own pace, uncovering slithers of lore bit by bit, experimenting with character builds and learning from mistakes in boss battles. This looks so fast paced, I genuinely think I would struggle. It’s fine, you can’t like them all, and hopefully this finds a new crowd who have never touched a From Soft title before and they become fans… and by the sounds of things from this news it’ll bankroll their next big title… whatever that maybe. And while you’re at it, how about some Armored Core 6 DLC please! 😄I watched an hour long gameplay of this and bounced off it completely. This Fortnite style is counter to what I love about Elden Ring and FromSoft. It’s a shame cuz I’d love more content to the base game.So essentially greed has gotten the better of them as well and they are going try and Milk dollars from this beloved ip at the expense of good sentiment.Brilliant Fromsoft, brilliant. For the love of God stop trying to chase live service unicorns. Just stopIt feels like the last domino falling to me.FromSoft who will tell everyone who will listen that the integrity of their games requires there be no accessibility options are now going to smash that integrity with a microtransaction model. Is there anyone of note left now not doing this junk?FromSoft live service game. This actually sounds terrible but I’m sure they’ll get away with it. From Software have a lot of good will.DLC doesn’t make the game live-service.Disgusting. Hopefully this game undersells but we all know that people will see the name and gobble it up without thinking twice. That’s a shame to see. But everything about this game is not for me anyway, so it shouldn’t affect me. I hope to god it doesn’t start a precedent that affects future titles though…I’m all about FromSoftware and play every SoulsBourne they put out but there’s something about this one that has me awfully skeptical about it and I won’t be picking it up day 1 like I normally would. If this proves to be a profitable endeavour, expect all future From games to have significant online/GaaS features and microtransactions. Each time you step through a boss portal, a credit window will pop up and it will say “you don’t currently own this feature….”G – and I cannot emphasise this more strongly – right TF.@ChrisDeku the problem is if the make ludicrous amounts of money from this then say goodbye to any future Elden ring/ dark souls etcI don’t get how this would work with bosses without completely obliterating the player base into small pockets based on boss combinations available to each player. Classes seem like an easy sell, though they’d probably make more money selling class skins.Paid dlc boss fights, give me a break , don’t people suffer enough with these games now there charging to see the you died screen, why are they’re charging , they can’t be short of a few quid and they’re using the same assets they’ve used for years.@Robinsad yup just like gtaI dont think this formula will be succesful since most of from soft players are maidenless and we go through our journeys alone.
