NASA’s Europa Clipper has sent back its first starry image from deep space, marking a key milestone on its 1.8-billion-mile journey to Jupiter’s icy moon, Europa. Captured just two months after launch, the image showcases distant stars that will help the spacecraft navigate with precision as it prepares for its historic mission to search for signs of life beneath Europa’s frozen shell. NASA’s Europa Clipper spacecraft has sent back its first starry image, a significant milestone as it makes its way toward Jupiter’s moon Europa. The image, released by NASA this week, is a mosaic of a star field stitched together from three individual shots taken on December 4, 2024. These photos, captured just two months after launch, show distant stars 150 to 300 light-years away, representing only 0.1% of the sky that surrounds the spacecraft.This first image isn’t just a stunning view of space—it’s a crucial part of Europa Clipper’s navigational system. The spacecraft’s star trackers, which help determine its orientation, use these stellar references to ensure precise maneuvering on its 1.8-billion-mile journey to Jupiter.To navigate deep space with pinpoint accuracy, the Europa Clipper is equipped with two small cameras called star trackers. These specialized instruments continuously capture images of the stars and compare them to a catalog of known star positions stored onboard.“Without knowing the spacecraft’s exact orientation, it would be impossible to precisely point science instruments at Europa to collect data, or to accurately point the antenna toward Earth for communication,” said Mana Salami, a Jet Propulsion Laboratory systems engineer.By constantly cross-referencing its location relative to the stars, Europa Clipper ensures that its instruments will be perfectly aligned when it reaches Jupiter’s moon in April 2030.Europa Clipper is one of the most ambitious robotic explorers ever launched. Its mission is to investigate whether Europa’s subsurface ocean—hidden beneath a thick layer of ice—could support life. The spacecraft will carry out nearly 50 flybys of Europa, collecting data on:Before reaching Jupiter, Europa Clipper will perform a series of gravity assists to increase its speed. The first of these will take place in March 2025, when the spacecraft flies near Mars. Later, it will swing back toward Earth, using our planet’s gravity to slingshot itself onto a direct course for Jupiter.With each new milestone, the Europa Clipper mission brings us one step closer to answering one of humanity’s biggest questions—could life exist beyond Earth?
