DOOM: The Dark Ages Drops Multiplayer In Favour Of ‘Most Expansive’ Campaign Ever – Pure Xbox

GuestGuestLogin | Sign UpPure XboxGuestLogin or Sign Up”We’re just really happy with the decision”Xbox and Bethesda developer id Software this week shared a proper reveal of DOOM: The Dark Ages and more details about it are beginning to emerge. One thing, in particular, highlighted in the first round of previews – is the fact this game is a “strictly campaign” affair. In other words – don’t expect multiplayer to feature. Here’s exactly what Marty Stratton had to say about this (via Eurogamer):”We made that decision early so we could really just go all in on the campaign. It’s our largest, most expansive, most epic campaign ever, and we’re just really happy with the decision.””It’s been awesome to have the team focused just on polishing and finishing the campaign.”This decision has also allowed the team to do more in the campaign, like “put the dragon and the Atlan [mech] in”. These are apparently ideas that have been considered across “multiple games now” but it was all too much on top of the “multiplayer component”. So now the team can finally “level up” the campaign experience for players. You can find out more about this new DOOM entry, due out for Xbox and Game Pass on May 15, 2025, in our existing coverage here on Pure Xbox.Get ready to rip and tear this MayRight around the corner! How do you feel about this? We need to get more great AAA single player games. Excellent. When a studio get to totally focus on single player only like id, you know it’s going to have great results.Very happy with the sounds of this no need for a tacted on multiplayer just for the sake of it that nobody is really going to play!!Understandable decision but kind of a bummer. I always wished that it would catch on.This makes sense. I’m not much of a multiplayer guy, but this always felt a little tacked on as an afterthought and didn’t seem to catch on. Better that id get to focus on what they are best at.I have no issues with this decision – its not as if previous Doom Multi-player modes are suddenly going to be removed so those who enjoy playing MP can continue playing the MP. It’s likely to be the ‘experience’ they expect and are accustomed to rather than being ‘different/changed’ to suit a new narrative and design ethos. Can’t complain. I only played a little bit of the multiplayer in Doom and Doom Eternal. I didn’t much care for either of them. From what I’ve read Dark Ages also pivots away from the awful platforming found in Eternal. Good, good…As for MP? There was a time I would have been annoyed by this news, but my death match days are behind me so no problem.DOOM has always been about the campaign for me. This just makes me way more excited for it.Multiplayer days for games like DOOM went away with the death of conventional LAN parties. I dabbled in a little bit back in DOOM 2016 and DOOM Eternal, but never enough stick with it. I’m glad they’re dropping it for more campaign goodness. That said, I’d love a good Quake 3 Arena remaster (we had Quake and Quake 2 remastered in recent years for – was it, QuakeCon?). I also wouldn’t say not to an Unreal Tournament 99 remaster.I’m glad to see them focus on the campaign. I’m a big fan of Doom and have never touched the multiplayer on any of them. What! That was my favorite part of Doom 2016. BOOOOO!!! Sure, it wasn’t anything “crazy”, but it didn’t have to be. Tons of people played multiplayer for years and years past release. It was unique, simple, and (god forbid) fun.Nice cop-out, iD Software!@Isolte As Hugo Martin said in the Xbox Dev Direct this week:”So in 2016, we asked you to run and gun, in Doom Eternal it was jump and shoot, and in Doom: The Dark Ages you’re gonna stand and fight.” Show CommentsLeave A CommentHold on there, you need to login to post a comment…These 13 Games Are Coming To Xbox Game Pass (January 22 – February 4)Including another Ubisoft addition!Six Games Will Leave Xbox Game Pass In Late January 2025Including a modern-day classic we gave 10/10 to!Multiple Xbox Game Pass Titles Seemingly Leaked For February 2025Next month is shaping up very nicely!Xbox Developer Direct 2025: Event Date, Start Times & Where To Watch The ShowcaseWe’re getting VERY close now!Deals: Lots Of Major Games Reduced By 90% In The Xbox Lunar New Year Sale 2025We’re being spoiled with INCREDIBLE discounts!Game ProfileTitle:DOOM: The Dark AgesSystem:Xbox Series X|SAlso Available For:PS5Publisher:Bethesda SoftworksDeveloper:id SoftwareGenre:Action, Adventure, ShooterRelease Date:Xbox Series X|SWhere to buy:Pre Order on Amazon
