Crypto Hackers Edit Trump’s Old Tweets to Insert Fake Nude Photos of Him – Gizmodo
Crypto hackers looking to promote their pump-and-dump scheme recently managed to hack Donald Trump’s old tweets and insert links to their memecoin website into them, journalist Matt Binder reports. The hackers were able to accomplish this via a bug in the URL shortener Bitly, according to Binder. By exploiting the bug, the hackers could swap out the link in the tweet for their own. Many of Trump’s old tweets were hijacked in this fashion. Most memorably, one of them, which mentions one of Trump’s appearances on the Sean Hannity show on Fox, was hacked to redirect viewers to the hackers’ memecoin site. The image embedded in the new link includes what looks like a nude Donald Trump getting hosed with a spray tan gun: “YUGE,” the new image reads. “YUGE ASF.”The image was still up when Gizmodo checked the links. You can see the original tweet here. Remarkably, it’s still up at the moment. The photo is obviously not a real picture of Trump. Instead, it’s a model from an art project and was taken years ago.Other tweets were also hacked. One Trump post from 2013—in which he encouraged users to follow him on Instagram—similarly redirected to the pump and dump memecoin scheme. Yet another tweet, this one posted by Melania Trump about her new jewelry collection, was also hijacked, Binder shows. While the images are still embedded in Trump’s timeline, Binder writes that the bug has since been fixed and it appears that the links have been killed by Bitly. Clicking through the links takes you to a page that says: “This link or QR code has been deactivated.” Gizmodo reached out to Bitly for comment.Trump is probably too busy ruining the federal government and destabilizing American relations with the rest of the world to care about this, but it sure is a good example of the kinds of mischief that entrepreneurial crypto sellers will get up to hawk their wares. It’s also sort of funny, given that Trump has designated himself the U.S.’s first “crypto president” and has said he wants to see crypto flourish under his watch. From the looks of things, it is doing just that.
