Black or White version differences for Go Tour Unova in Pokémon Go explained – Eurogamer

WishlistedOur favourite demos from Steam Next FestWill you choose Black’s Reshiram or White’s Zekrom?Choosing between the Black or White version of the Go Tour: Unova Global event is an important decision nearly every Pokémon Go player will make this weekend. It’s a choice which has an effect on a number of factors you’ll experience during this Pokémon Go event, such as a bonus you’ll receive from Tour Pass. You may also find it easier to obtain one of the new Adventure Effects – Freeze Shock and Ice Burn.To assist in your decision making, we’ve taken a look at the Black and White version differences in Pokémon Go down below. Alongside this we’ve outlined which version, Black or White, will be best for you and how to choose between Black and White. On this page:Though not as impactful as the earlier Go Tour events, your choice between the Black and White version of Go Tour: Unova Global will affect your experience of this Pokémon Go event.By choosing the Black version, you’ll unlock:Selecting the White version unlocks:While the attendees of the Go Tour Unova events in either New Taipei City or Los Angeles can’t select a badge, every Kyurem they encounter after defeating both Black Kyurem and White Kyurem in five-star raids is guaranteed to know Glaciate. This is perfect for anyone looking to add more Kyurem variants with their Adventure Effects to their collection. In fact, even if you didn’t attend these events, you’ll find it a lot easier to get both Adventure Effects during this year’s Go Tour event compared to the last. This is because the Adventure Effects are tied to Kyurem knowing Glaciate – an exclusive move which can be taught using an Elite Charged TM – and you having a spare Reshiram or Zekrom, along with the required candy. Thanks to this, no matter which version you select, all you have to do is catch two Kyurem who know Glaciate and then battle either Zekrom or Reshriam to get the required candy. Both of them are thankfully appearing in raids, check our habitat hour and raid schedule to learn when!As you can see, obtaining both Adventure Effects is a lot easier when compared to last year’s Go Tour: Sinnoh Global event. There, while it was possible to get the alternative version’s Adventure Effects, the odds were weighed against you, so you’d have to battle the same five-star boss again and again and again until you got lucky. To choose between the Black and White version of Go Tour: Unova Global in Pokémon Go, you must progress through the opening stages of the ‘It’s Not Over Yet’ Special Research quest. When the time comes, simply make your decision on screen but you may want to take a look at the next section covering which version, Black or White, is best first.Shortly into this quest, you’ll be faced with the prompt to select between either the Black or White version of the event. It’s important to remember you can not change your mind, so choose wisely. We recommend reaching this point in the quest quickly as, while the version differences only play a small part in Go Tour: Unova Global, it’s still part of the overall event and delaying your choice will affect the gameplay. Notably it may be harder to obtain a Kyurem who knows Glaciate – the move required to complete the Black and White Kyurem Fusions – which may be annoying if you want to test out the new Adventure Effects.Players who attended the Los Angeles or New Taipei City Go Tour: Unova will not have to select a badge. Instead every Kyurem they encounter after successfully defeating a Black or White Kyurem is guaranteed to know Glaciate.

The Dual Destiny Season is here!

Go Tour Unova Global has arrived, so check out the habitat hours, learn how to fuse Kyurem or the Ice Burn and Freeze Shock Adventure Effects. On top of that, learn how to get Volt Fusion Energy, then the Black Kyurem counters and White Kyurem counters.

Also take a look at the currently running special research quest or the enigma field research task. Alongside this learn how to get Maractus, Sigilyph and Bouffalant or Throh, Sawk and Durant, or even Pansage, Pansear and Panpour.

You can make use of the Tour Pass, Pokémon Go’s battle pass, and earn the Lucky Trinket if you’re on the pay-to-play tier. You can also purchase the Masterwork Research: A Dazzling Aria quest for shiny Meloetta.

You can now catch Dynamax Pokémon through Max Battles. First, however, you need to visit Power Spots to collect Max Particles and complete the To the Max! quest.

Don’t forget to try out Routes, Gift Exchange and Party Play while you’re hunting down rare Pokémon, fighting in the Go Battle League or competing in PokéStop Showcases.

When it comes to which is the best version of Go Tour: Unova Global, the answer is subjective to your personal needs. Yes, every time I write that I am perfectly aware it is an annoying answer. The thing is, with the Adventure Effects being easier to obtain this year, your version choice holds slightly less weight. Thankfully, there are some factors we can take a look at to help narrow your choice down. (As narrow as a choice between two things can be.)The first is which is a better Pokémon – Black Kyurem or White Kyurem? The answer is they are both very powerful Pokémon (oh no, I’m risking writing a certain word again), but there’s one key difference between them. Black Kyurem is perfect against any raid boss weak to Ice and Dragon-types, while White Kyurem is perfect against any raid boss weak to Ice-type. As long as the raid boss isn’t weak to Dragon-types, White Kyurem is better than Black Kyurem. Yup – the difference is that small. In my personal opinion, Black Kyurem is the way to go. I say this because, when I’m building a team, I like my choices to have as many type advantages as physically possible. I find my strength in versatility and, due to this, Black Kyurem suits my playstyle better than White Kyurem. Now, you may build your team differently, so it’s worth seeing how Black and White Kyurem could both fit into your playstyle to see if one stands above the other. Just keep in mind that, while it may take some time, you should be able to obtain both during Go Tour: Unova Global. The new Adventure Effects are another factor you could use to decide between the Black and White versions. We’ve got a whole guide covering the Freeze Shock and Ice Burn Adventure Effects if you’d like to learn more about them. The quick rundown for now, however, is that Freeze Shock makes Pokémon easier to catch by preventing them from moving. Meanwhile, Ice Burn makes it easier for you to make Excellent Throws by slowing down a Pokémon’s target ring. The clear difference between them being that Ice Burn is good at supporting XP grinding, while Freeze Shock is helpful for catching troublesome Pokémon, especially five-star raid bosses. Here it’s worth considering what your current goals are in Pokémon Go. Are you trying to reach Level 50? Then Ice Burn, combined with a Lucky Egg, is for you. Filling in Pokédex entries? Freeze Shock will keep those fast moving Pokémon in place. I will say that, again in my personal opinion, Ice Burn stands out as being the superior choice here since it does allow you the chance to maximise the XP grind. Focus on a Pokémon with a large target circle (Spotlight Hours and Community Days being the ideal place to look), toss a Lucky Egg into the mix and you’re away! Finally, if neither of the above factors appeal to you, simply choose the Pokémon you like the best out of Reshiram or Zekrom. You’re going to be getting a badge for one of them, might as well get the one you think is the coolest!Personally, I’ll be going with the Black version. While Ice Burn does sound appealing, I really want to add a new Pokémon to my rooster and Black Kyurem looks like it has the power to fill that spot.Best of luck choosing between Black and White!
