Bill Simmons inexplicably spoils ‘Landman’ season finale – Awful Announcing
Awful AnnouncingI haven’t watched Landman yet, but I was planning on it.More accurately, I was at least considering it.But whether or not I ultimately opt to watch the buzzy Taylor Sheridan series once football season finally wraps up in a few weeks, I already know one of the key plot points to the season finale. That’s because during Sunday night’s episode of The Bill Simmons Podcast, the Sports Guy inexplicably decided to nonchalantly share a key spoiler from the first season’s 10th and final episode merely a week after it first premiered. That warning above, in big bold font, is far more than Simmons provided during his weekly “Guess the Lines” episode with “Cousin” Sal Iacono. Rather, while discussing their annual get-together with their fantasy football league at Shakey’s Pizza in Los Angeles, The Ringer founder casually revealed a key plot point for the character played by Jon Hamm, who happens to be a member of the aforementioned league.“I wasn’t gonna go,” Cousin Sal said of the annual banquet. “And then Jon Hamm’s like, ‘you’re going, right?’ I’m like, ‘this is kind of weird if this guy who’s in like 700 movies currently is…”Before Iacono could finish his thought, Simmons trampled him with a Myles Garrett-like bullrush, spoiling the Landman finale in the name of a punchline in the process.“And he just died in Landman,” Simmons revealed of Hamm. “It felt like we had to go pay our respects.”What?! Jon Hamm’s character dies?! Why would Simmons spoil this?!Sure. I don’t know anything about Hamm’s character or Landman other than that Jerry Jones makes a cameo at some point. But when/if I ever get around to watching it, I’ll now do so spending the first nine episodes knowing that Hamm’s character bites the dust in the 10th.“Oh, you son of a bitch,” Iacono replied, speaking for both himself and the listening audience. “I’m too behind. Why would you do that?”Simmons attempted to mount a meager defense, incorrectly claiming that one week is an acceptable amount of time to publicly share spoilers without warning. Iacono, the podcast’s producer and the audience watching the show live on YouTube, however, were quick to shut him down, shaming the ex-ESPN columnist into apologizing for his faux pas.“I guess I spoiled, sorry. The YouTube guys agrees. My bad. My bad, everybody,” Simmons said. “I Jared Goff’d the podcast.”While it was already too late for the audience watching live on YouTube, Simmons curiously left his offending comment in the podcast version of his show, thus exposing millions of more listeners to what should have been a completely avoidable spoiler. For someone who’s built his career marrying sports and pop culture, it’s mind-blowing that Simmons would think that one week is an acceptable amount of time to pass before spoiling a show in the streaming era — especially a series that many people are only watching (or will watch) based on his recommendation in previous podcasts.Ben Axelrod is a veteran of the sports media landscape, having most recently worked for NBC’s Cleveland affiliate, WKYC. My god, what is going on here? How many guys did the Dodgers get?””Sooner or later, we’re going to have to grab that golden ticket out of our back pockets and play it.”Friday’s opening night doubleheader averaged 312,000 viewers.””We believe it is unfair to charge customers for something they do not watch…””Go Irish!!!””I might call Miami and say Stafford for Tua.””Enough!
