As storm approaches, forecasters say to brace for heavy snow in Mass. – MassLive.com

As the storm sneaks closer to Massachusetts, residents are advised to prepare for anywhere from 5 to 12 inches of snow over the weekend. Snowfall could start anywhere between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday for residents who live west of Springfield and Greenfield. The start time for the rest of the state could vary from 7 pm. to 10 p.m. As of 4 p.m. on Saturday, there have been no new updates regarding this weekend’s storm according to National Weather Service meteorologist Caitlyn Mensch.“We’re looking at the same totals and timing,” Mensch told MassLive. “We’re happy it’s not happening during the morning on like a Monday or Tuesday.”The northern third of the state, especially north of the turnpike, is forecast to accumulate nearly nine inches of snow, National Weather Service meteorologist Franci Tarasiewicz told MassLive Saturday morning. The Cape and Islands can expect between 4 and 6 inches of snow as it gets hit with a period of ice pellets mixed with the snow near the tail end of the event, potentially reducing overall snowfall totals in those areas by Sunday.Pittsfield, Fitchburg and Lawrence and their surrounding areas may all get 8 to 12 inches of snow, according to a map the National Weather Service released early Saturday morning.Essex, Middlesex and northern Worcester counties in addition to Berkshire County and western Franklin County could see a foot of snow. Boston, Worcester, Springfield and most of the remainder of the state- except for the Cape and Islands- should expect between 6 and 8 inches of snow. The Cape and Islands are set to receive 4 to 6 inches of snow. Travel is not suggested during these times, especially between the hours of 11 p.m. on Saturday and 3 a.m. on Sunday as snowfall rates could approach one to two inches per hour.“Saturday night will be difficult, to say the least,” the National Weather Service explained to MassLive. “Travel during that time is not recommended unless it’s absolutely necessary. If you have to travel, of course, plan for a much slower commute than you otherwise might expect.”The storm is expected to wind down quickly on Sunday and wrap up in all parts of the state by 11 a.m.If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
