At its most recent Unpacked event, the company included smart glasses in its lineup of future products. Apple was reportedly working on AR glasses as well, but it now appears to have made the decision to give up on the idea altogether. That’s despite Apple having a lead in the AR headset segment with the Vision Pro.According to Bloomberg, Apple has decided to cancel its AR glasses project last week. These would looked like normal glasses but with integrated displays for AR features. The glasses would have required a connect to a Mac.
Apple wanted these glasses to chart a new path for the company in the AR segment, following the weak market response for the $3,499 Apple Vision Pro headset. However, the company has found it a challenge to bring together the right technology at the right cost.
The decision to cancel this project came after a failed attempt to revamp the design. Apple initially wanted the glasses to pair with an iPhone, but it faced problems related to processing power. It would have also negatively impacted the connected iPhone’s battery life, so the decision was made to require a connection to a Mac.
The product didn’t perform well in reviews with company executives, and the features they wanted it to have kept changing. The team working on this project felt that this would end up being shelved, and the final decision was ultimately made last week.Meanwhile, Samsung is gearing up to launch its Project Moohan AR headset potentially later this year. It’s a competitor to the Vision Pro. The AR smart glasses are expected to arrive by Q3 2025 with an initial production run of 500,000 units. They’ll reportedly use Qualcomm’s AR1 chipset and an APU from NXP.
