AMD RDNA 4 GPU Architecture Focuses On Desktop Graphics Cards First, Possibility Open For Future Mobile Chips & APUs – Wccftech

AMD’s first products based on the RDNA 4 graphics architecture will be focused on the desktop platform with mobility products seeing a potential launch in the future. In an interview with Notebookcheck, AMD’s Director of Product Management for Premium Mobile client solutions, Ben Conard, detailed the plans of the company for its next-gen RDNA 4 graphics architecture.Talking to Ben about whether RDNA 4 will make it to laptops, he responded that the team’s strategy currently is to roll out the first products on desktop platforms. These will include the recently announced Radeon RX 9000 series products, which include the RX 9070 and RX 9060 series. Both of these segments are positioned against the RTX 4070/5070 and RTX 4060/5060 series and aim to offer better value. AMD has recently pushed the launch of its RX 9000 GPUs slightly back and the company will take this time to better optimize the software stack, though there are also reports that the pushback might be to adjust the prices even more competitively against the competition.VS: And do you see prospects for RDNA 4 laptops going ahead? Unfortunately, the number of AMD dGPU-based laptop SKUs have been pretty anemic.Ben: Our current graphics strategy is focused on the desktop market with RDNA 4. So, I think you’ll see those types of products first in the future. Certainly, RDNA 4 and future graphics technologies will make it into mobile, whether they be on APUs or future products.Ben Conrad – AMD Director of Product Managment for Premium Mobile Client (via NotebookCheck)However, there’s still the possibility of a mobile launch, whether that be on the discrete GPU side for laptops or an integrated APU part. AMD’s RDNA 3.5 GPU architecture is limited to integrated releases on the Ryzen AI 300 and Ryzen AI Max chips, but we can expect future APUs to utilize the newer architecture in the coming year.VS: Probably this is futuristic, but we’ve heard stuff like RDNA and CDNA would be combining together.Ben: Yes, so that is a long-term project to unify the two, and I’m actually personally very excited about that because the ML focus is actually where the client market is going to go in the long term. So having that, um everybody going in the same direction, you know, I think would be a real positive.Ben Conrad – AMD Director of Product Managment for Premium Mobile Client (via NotebookCheck)Finally, Ben also touched upon the upcoming UDNA architecture which would unify the RDNA and CDNA architectures under one roof. The UDNA architecture is expected to mark the return of the high-end series for the Radeon division and will focus intensely on the ML/AI side of things, which is something that NVIDIA has also opted for in their Blackwell lineup. Some posts on wccftech.com may contain affiliate links.
