This was all thanks to the release of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, a CPU that sold out instantly – and remains difficult to find around its $479 MSRP.It’s clear that AMD was caught off guard by the ridiculous levels of demand for this gaming chip, even blaming Intel at one point for its lack of competition. David McAfee – the very same person who revealed AMD’s plans to launch the RX 9070 series in March (and gave some reasons for the delay) – recently sat down to chat with TechPowerUp. Here, he discussed a number of topics from CPUs to APUs and GPUs. One thing that caught our attention though was the reaction to X3D processor demand, and how AMD wants to directly address the issue.“We’ve been blown away by demand for the X3D. We’ve ramped up production massively for Q4, Q1, and Q2 throughout 2025. Just yesterday, I saw the 9800X3D on Amazon and Newegg again. I don’t think they lasted long, but they were there. Every week, we deliver more supply to the market. X3D has a longer manufacturing lead time due to the stacking process. As we look into 2025, we are adding significant manufacturing capacity.”We all saw how well the 9800X3D did, and CPU sales in 2025 continue to show that X3D chips dominate sales in the DIY market. As a result, AMD is ramping up its production throughout the year – so those of you out there still clambering for a 9800X3D or any other X3D chip shouldn’t have to wait too long to see stock levels looking healthy. AMD did recently reveal reasons why the popular 9800X3D is always out of stock; one of them being the added production time for 3D V-Cache stacking.The 9800X3D lives on AMD’s latest AM5 platform, but AM4 chips remain popular thanks to long-standing support. For example, the 5700X3D (or 5600X3D, which is available at select retailers) has proven to be a popular AM4 upgrade for gamers running more budget-friendly systems.
