But the Red Sox got creative with Bregman’s contract to make it the most beneficial to both sides. The reported three-year, $120 million deal Bregman will receive from the storied franchise isn’t as straight forward as it seems. Bregman has opt-outs after each season, meaning he could be in Boston for just the 2025 campaign before testing the free-agent market again. And while it looks like Bregman is making $40 million per season on paper, there are large deferrals in his deal — all baseball fans know about contract deferrals now thanks to Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Dodgers — that makes the contract easier on the Red Sox, as The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier detailed. “The deferrals, in turn, lower the average annual value (AAV) to $31.7 million as calculated by MLB for luxury-tax purposes, lowering the impact on the Red Sox payroll,” Speier wrote. “They also mean that the present-day value for Bregman is less than $40 million. However, the player opt-outs carry enormous value for Bregman, arguably tens of millions of dollars.”Story continues below advertisementSpeier also noted that Bregman received a $5 million signing bonus, making his salary for the upcoming season $35 million. All indications were that Bregman was on the haunt for a long-term contract in the $200 million range this offseason. But Bregman’s deal with the Red Sox might be the next best thing due to the player opt-outs.Bregman now gets to play half of his games at Fenway Park, a place where he has raked in 21 career regular-season games to the tune of a .375 batting average, seven home runs and 15 RBIs. If Bregman can go on to have a strong season at age 31 after a down 2024 campaign, in which he hit .260 with 26 homers and 75 RBIs, he can look to cash in and receive the last big contract of his career. And this time it won’t cost a compensatory pick to sign him. “In short, the Red Sox and Bregman found a structure that made sense for both sides,” Speier said. “The Sox made a huge investment — the $31.7 million represents the highest AAV in team history — but somewhat mitigated their luxury-tax hit. (As of now, they still project to have a payroll as calculated for luxury-tax purposes of roughly $245 million, which would be the largest in franchise history, and take them past the $241 million threshold.)”Story continues below advertisementDigital Content ProducerAn award-winning journalist that has covered nearly everything under the sun for over a decade.
