After What Feels Like A Lifetime, Amazon Is Cancelling Mighty No. 9 3DS And Vita Pre-Orders – Time Extension
GuestLogin | Sign UpTime ExtensionGuestUserIt’s finally overKeiji Inafune’s Mighty No. 9 was supposed to be a spiritual successor to Mega Man and raised over $4 million in crowdfunding way back in 2013.However, the finished game was a crushing disappointment, and while it was launched across a wide range of systems, the Nintendo 3DS and PS Vita versions were delayed – leaving them in a limbo which, years later, is only now being addressed. If you were one of the few people who were still waiting expectantly for your Amazon pre-order for either version to finally be fulfilled, we have some bad news – the retailer has finally cancelled the outstanding orders, nine years after they went live.it’s so over Speaking in 2018, Abstraction Games CEO Ralph Egas – whose studio was handling the ports – revealed that zero work had been undertaken on the project. In 2017, Mighty No. 9 developer Comcept was purchased by Level 5. Inafune recently worked on the NFT-based Beastroid, which was inspired by the Mega Man series, and is the producer of Level 5’s upcoming Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time.”The internet hates my Kickstarter”Nintendo LifeUpdate: ‘Beastroid’ project unveiledNintendo LifeComcept to blame[source thegamer.com] PrevNext About Damien McFerranDamien has been writing professionally about tech and video games since 2007 and oversees all of Hookshot Media’s sites from an editorial perspective. Comments 29I backed this on Kickstarter and choose the 3ds version as my preferred version.I never got a refund. What a different world the industry was in when Mighty No 9 launched. It wasn’t nearly as bad as some had said, even if it’s definitely not a great game. It’s X8 tier-ish. Certainly not another X7, you know? But, as a trainwreck, it’s quaint by today’s standards, even if it’s more widely remembered than worse launches (including Infafune’s own Megaman Legends successor that never materialized). Can’t believe the saga is finally over.Surprised it took this long for pre-orders to finally be cancelled for those versions.@somnambulance its not that its a horrible game, it just had a horribly mismanaged crowdfunding campaign, delays, badly managed community forum, and a ton of hype riding it all for a 6/10 experience at best.I find it ironic that the Mega Man guy leaves Capcom to make a Mega Man spiritual successor, fails at it, and then Capcom years later does it much better with Mega Man 11.Amazon had pre orders for Gradius VI back in 2006 for the PS3. Knowing it was unlikely to happen, I still placed the preorder and it was eventually cancelled in 2011!@X68000 That’s funny. I remember paying in full for a preorder of the Last Guardian during the PS3 era at GameStop and I totally forgot about it. I ended up going through a phase where I didn’t go to GameStop for a long while and my wife ended up taking me to one in 2019, and they apologized that they didn’t have a copy available and I was sort of confused, as I totally forgot about it. I had bought the game for like $8 a few months before that. Maybe things like your story and mine are why preorders are starting to vanish?@poyo_pie It was sort of the first big one, but unfortunately there’s been many more that have had similar scale and ended up worse, but you’re right about the hype. Mighty No 9 had hype unlike any of these Kickstarters before it, and summarily… none of them have had hype again after it.Reminder that Mighty Number 9 is now owned by Level 5. I think that explains why they seem to have trouble actually releasing games these days…It only took then Mighty No. 9 years,,.,.,.,.,.,..This reminds me, I need to check if GamePlanet in Mexico is still taking pre-orders of Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars for the Wii U (the 3DS version didn’t get pre-orders). They were taking them for a non-existent physical version, never heard of anyone pre-ordering it, let alone getting a refund.@Twilite9 Same, and it still hurts.Maybe now the Kickstarter will allow me to change my pledge from 3DS to PC so I can finally get the copy of the game that I payed for? I mean, at this point, I purchased the game on clearance and already played it, but it’s the principle.@somnambulance Yeah people were much less jaded to crowdfunding campaigns back then, because it was relatively new. From my experience, the only one that lived up to the hype was Bloodstained, despite some of its promises being late.Mighty No. 9 is like Mega Man X6: islands of greatness in a sea of mediocrity. I still had my fun with it and I hope one day it gets the sequel it deserves.Ends with a whimper indeed.I honestly thought they canceled the Vita version when the Vita died.@Twilite9 You may be able to get another system’s version if you contact them.Jeff Bezos was really keeping the dream alive there! I’m still waiting for ‘90s Arcade Racer… 😫I must insert my obligatory recommendation of Mighty Gunvolt Burst which is like an 8-bit demake of Mighty No 9 but is actually really good. It’s also made by IntiCreates, I think they struggled with doing a 3D game as their 2D stuff is usually good. Or maybe Mighty No 9 was just taken off them before they could really polish it?God – this game was AWFUL. Easily the biggest KS disappointment I’ve ever backed.I really can’t get behind any Kickstarter projects for this reason i get the need for funding for the project but time and time again it’s bad news and undeliverable promises.Mighty number 9 was licky to have actually shipped in some capacity but it’s clear the scope was far to wide for a small Dev team on a Kickstarter shoe string it really should have been targeting pc, ps4, xb1 at the time.@retrogamer1 @Twilite9 I tried this years ago. They never responded.@poyo_pie there have been a lot of good video game Kickstarters. Shovel Knight, Hollow Knight, The Messenger, and Sea of Stars are standouts.@poyo_pie Shovel Knight remains the gold standard as Kickstarter games go, to me. Shantae 1/2-Genie Hero also seems to be one of the better Kickstarter success stories.Bloodstained as a project had a lot of issues. I won’t go too deep on that because I don’t want to try to dump on anyone’s enjoyment of the game. But them cancelling versions six months before release and also lying about the performance of the Switch version(and taking a long time to patch it) really left a bad taste in my mouth(I blame the publisher for that). At least they delivered a game and it seems to have been well received.@poyo_pie There’s been a bunch of successful crowd funded games. I mean, yeah, Bloodstained (though Curse of the Moon > Ritual of the Night for me), Yooka Laylee, Thimbleweed Park, Hollow Knight, I mean the list goes on… I still invest in Kickstarter games personally. There’s been a lot of hits, in my opinion. There was like a renaissance of crowdfunded games for a bit, even if Mighty No 9 flopped.I’m surprise they didn’t just take any one of IntiCreate’s Mega Man clone and just turn those into Mighty No. 9 for 3DS and PS Vita just like how Nintendo turn Doki Doki Panic and Panel de Pon into Super Mario Bros. 2 and Tetris Attack respectively. Would had been something good rather than nothing, it’ll be lazy but would still be good. Even if this is a dead IP, at least Beck lives on with more successful games in Mighty Gunvolt and Mighty Gunvolt Burst.I guess it’s finally time to cry like an anime fan on prom night. If anybody ever made an index of those three hour long credits, I’d like to look up what number I was as a backer. I’m not patient enough to sit through the whole thing and I’ve never found a full list anywhere. I got all the rewards I was promised, though they trickled in verrrrrrrry slowwwwwly, and for all the hype it had when the Kickstarter was launched the game is very “mid.” The marketing was the nail in the coffin (see OldManHermit’s comment) for this game.I don’t think the game was terrible. It’s just people were expecting Mega man and they got something different and something that didn’t look like the concept art.@sdelfin I guess I should have specified, I was focusing more on crowdfunding campaigns of spiritual successors by industry veterans.Within this specific category, Bloodstained was the only one I enjoyed.Well, kudos to the people that kept their Amazon pre-order for that long without cancelling. It was obviously never happening.
