A Ford Mustang Sedan Might Be A Good Idea, Actually: COTD – The Autopian

The Ford Mustang is an American icon that, understandably, enthusiasts don’t want to see butchered into a million variants. I mean, people were pretty fired up about the Mustang Mach-E’s name, but pretty much nobody even cares anymore. Apparently, people are even buying more of the electric crossover version than the gas pony car. This morning, Matt ended the Morning Dump by asking you if you’d be okay with a Mustang sedan. V10omous has the right spirit:Who in their right mind would get mad about a new RWD V8 sedan these days? They could call it the “Ford V10omous Sucks” and I’d probably still give it a test drive.Oh yeah, bring on the RWD V8 sedans! I don’t care what nameplate you desecrate to make it happen. This morning, Mark wrote a Shitbox Showdown of a cute Fiat 500 going up against a rotting Nissan 720 camper. Now, old and ratty campers are dirt cheap, but most of the time not even I would bother with restoring one. Instead, I like StillNotATony’s idea:I had a Fiat 500 for years as my daughter’s first car. We had very little trouble with it, and I might have kept it had it been a stick and yellow (objectively the best color)! So why did I vote for the Nissan? I kinda want a small truck now. If I had that one, I’d probably just trash the RV body altogether and build a cab wall and flatbed for it. Pickups are expensive, but truck based RVs, especially old ones, are relatively cheap!Besides, you can have fun sending sledgehammers at the thing and not feel bad about it!Finally, Jason wrote a Cold Start showing his fascination for old-school American cabover semis. ADDvanced gives us a great story:Torch must be using his brain wave scanners, because I OWN A CABOVER SEMI NOW! I know nothing about them so I’ve been learning a lot.Basically, when I was around 7, my dad bought a white/freightliner COE to tow his 32′ Cabin Cruiser. He used to tow everything with 70s cadillacs, but wanted to step it up, since the boat weighs 9,500lbs. So he sold the caddy, and bought a used Freightliner from Allied trucking company for DIRT cheap. He then spent the next 15 years improving it; the pneumatic leather seats are out of a much newer Volvo, new bumper, new fuel tanks, polished 6″ stainless steel lake pipes, refreshed the engine, straightened and repainted the entire cab to match the boat graphics, all hand sanded/polished stainless hardware on the exterior, upgraded wheels. Even the frame of the truck was modified; all the extra holes that weren’t needed were welded shut and ground smooth and resprayed. He went SO Fing HARD with it, and made it so clean, he quit using it. He occasionally took it to ‘truck shows’, but just borrowed a semi from someone else whenever he needed one. This thing has been in storage, indoors, for 15-20 years at this point. Here are some pics, from when he first got it, to close to being done customizing it; the front wheels now match the rear ones in the last few photos. Yeah, that’s me in the bomber jacket lolOh yeah, I need a cabover in my life, stat! Have a great evening, everyone! That is a very cool old Frieghtshaker! Assume there is no way around needing a CDL to drive it, unlike the RV exceptions for buses in some states?Ford’s shareholders would probably get mad about a new V8 sedan, because they would sell *dozens* of them to the boring car buyers of today. Sigh. Might as well make a top-trim Exploder V8 and call it the Mustang SUV. Would sell like hotcakes, because we live in the worst timeline.>I need a cabover in my life
Thanks for making me realize I do too, albeit for very different purposes. I wonder how easily I could get my hands on a FAP 1626 the next time I go visit family in Serbia and make it relive its racing glory days or put a new twist on “drive a big truck to LARP military” bullshit in a 2026. Mercedes, is this how one starts hoarding vehicles?I think a Mustang based Ranchero would be awesome.Man, that brings back memories! Allied was a big company back then, and I liked the orange trucks. While I was a Peterbilt fan, I’m pretty sure this cabover or a variant ofit was the most popular semi tractor I saw.You could call it the falconSince the logic goes ford can only sell Trucks/SUVs and Mustangs. Think of the possibilities.Mustang-focus – a smaller mustang that can focus on being a small car
Mustang-fiesta – a party attitude car focused on younger drivers
Mustang-taurus – a chimera but larger than a mustang more like a family sedanWhat could possibly go wrong?© 2025 The Autopian. All Rights Reserved. Design by Jazel.
