“Friends were thinking they were coming to see me for the last time”March 13, 2025March 13, 2025March 13, 2025Former MTV host Matt Pinfield has come out a coma after suffering a massive stroke back in January. The music personality shared the great news with The Hollywood Reporter, declaring, “Guys, I’m alive!”Pinfield, who hosted MTV’s influential alternative-rock program 120 Minutes in the 1990s and again during a revival in the early 2010s, had been in a coma for roughly two months. He has now been released from the ICU, and is currently rehabilitating at a facility in Los Angeles.“I’m recovering and am going to come back swinging. I was unresponsive for two months,” he further told The Hollywood Reporter. “Friends were thinking they were coming to see me for the last time. The doctors never expected me to speak or to walk again.”As Pinfield mentioned, there was a prevailing thought that he would not survive, as he also battled pneumonia and was put on a ventilator during the ordeal. When he woke from the coma, he immediately started talking music.“My friends said I went on talking about ‘A Whiter Shade of Pale’ and how they couldn’t keep up with what I was saying,” he said. “They were, like, ‘Yeah, he’s still got that brain.’”Pinfield is itching to get back to work, once he makes a full recovery. He hosts a couple of programs on Los Angeles radio stations, and is the co-host of the AXS TV show The Power Hour.“I’m definitely going to take some time to recover,” remarked Pinfield. “Then I’ll do my radio shows again and get back to work doing what I love, which is to entertain people playing music.”While he was in a coma, his daughter Jessica filed for temporary conservatorship over her father, requesting that she handle his health and finances amid concerns that others may take advantage of the situation. “She’s the one who saved my life,” said Pinfield. “She protected me.”Pinfield also expressed gratitude to all the musicians and peers who supported him while he was in the ICU. ”I want to say how great grateful I am for all the people that that were wishing me well,” he said. “The love of the community helped me get through this.”Among the people who supported Pinfield was Garbage singer Shirley Manson, who wrote on social media, “He has championed so many artists over the decades who would have otherwise been ignored by mainstream media and the American music scene would be very different indeed without his taste and influence.” Subscribe to our daily email digest for the latest headlines.
