Lenovo has sparked excitement with a solar-powered laptop concept, hinting at a future where your power source is the sun. Dubbed the Yoga Solar PC, the company unveiled this sustainable proof-of-concept at the Mobile World Congress being held at L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona, Spain. Lenovo’s concept laptop incorporates a solar panel directly into its lid. The tech giant is claiming it to be the “world’s first ultraslim solar-powered PC” due to its 15mm thickness and 1.22kg (around 2.29 pounds) weight. The Wired reported that the Samsung NC215S (2011) was the first laptop to incorporate solar power.Currently, the Yoga Solar PC remains a concept with no production timeline announced.“The device aims to bridge the gap between functionality and environmental awareness and represents Lenovo’s vision of achieving a future where renewable energy and innovation are intrinsically intertwined,” Lenovo’s press statement noted. The solar panel uses 84 back-contact solar cells, placing all electrical connections behind the cells to maximize light capture. This design achieves a sunlight-to-electricity conversion rate exceeding 24%  – “one of the highest in the industry.”Interestingly, the 24% efficiency rate surpasses typical silicone-based panels in consumer electronics. The Verge reported it is less efficient than perovskite-enhanced panels (up to 43%).Lenovo claims that just 20 minutes of direct sunlight can give you up to an hour of video playback. However, the company is still researching the panel’s performance in less optimal, low-light environments. It is equipped with an innovative Dynamic Solar Tracking system that optimizes energy capture by continuously monitoring the solar panel’s current and voltage. This data is then used in conjunction with the Solar-First Energy system to adjust the charger’s settings, prioritizing the flow of harvested energy to the laptop. Notably, even in low-light environments, the panel continues to generate power, effectively maintaining the battery charge during periods of inactivity. In terms of configuration, it boasts an Intel Lunar Lake processor, 32GB of RAM, 1TB of storage, and a 14-inch OLED screen. The ultra-thin laptop is designed to optimize solar energy intake, regardless of indoor or outdoor lighting. Even when idle on a desk, the Yoga Solar PC can passively recharge its battery n indoor lighting, but it performs best in natural sunlight.Solar charging is a useful backup for the Yoga Solar PC when outlets are unavailable. However, a full solar charge depends on good weather lasting a while.Reportedly, Lenovo introduced an external solar power kit concept for existing Yoga laptop users. This portable kit, resembling a book, unfolds to reveal two solar panels. It can directly charge devices via USB-C or charge a power bank. Lenovo has not committed to producing the Yoga Solar PC. The company will release the ThinkBook Plus Gen 6, a 2023 concept with a rollable OLED display, for purchase in June 2025, priced at $3,499.“With the announcement of innovations like the Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition, the IdeaPad Slim 3x, and the Lenovo Yoga Solar PC Concept, Lenovo has delivered a suite of new devices and proofs of concept that empower end users to let their creativity shine, their ‘process’ unbounded by the processing of their PC thanks to AI-powered innovation,” said Jun Ouyang, Lenovo’s Senior Vice President, in the press release.Mrigakshi Dixit Mrigakshi is a science journalist who enjoys writing about space exploration, biology, and technological innovations.
