Legendary music composer Quincy Jones, meanwhile, also received a special commemoration, from Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey.
However, there were a number of notable big screen names missing from the In Memoriam montage. Among them: John Ashton, Michael Cole, Shannen Doherty, Linda Lavin, Martin Mull, Nicholas Pryor, Morgan Spurlock, Lynne Marie Stewart, Tony Todd, Michelle Trachtenberg and Gwen Van Dam.“It’s an Oscar ritual that always has a rustle of drama beneath the surface,” Academy Awards authority Michael Schulman recently told our sister pub The Hollywood Reporter of the In Memoriam segment, which is curated by by a committee representing all 19 Academy branches and not the ABC telecast’s producers. “No matter what happens, there will be 10 headlines about who was snubbed posthumously, and there’s nothing that can be done about it.”Comments are monitored, so don’t forkin’ curse and don’t bore us with how much your coworker’s sister-in-law makes per hour. ΔWhy don’t they include everyone?????Time…they save the time for the silly bits and songs that should be left alone instead of honoring everyone who has contributed to memories. If you can’t do all, do none???The songs are nominated for the awards, so they should be included! The question is why they spend so much of the time on people who the audience never sees, instead of people like Michelle (title character in a movie) & Linda that people knew, as well as knew died?!as you stated title character in A movie. There were actors who were the lead in a dozen + movies that were not mentionedWhat was James Bond nominated for? They didn’t need that 007 singing tribute.Or the dancing.None of the performed songs were nominated for anything this year. They used to do the nominated songs but not this yr.Michelle was primarily a TV star. Sure, she starred in Harriet the Spy and Ice Princess, but those weren’t exactly cinematic classics. Hopefully she’ll get the recognition she deserves at the Emmys.what? I don’t know that any of the songs that were sung last night were nominated? Not sure, but SKYFALL won a few years ago, Diamonds are Forever is from the 60’s and Live and Let Die from the 70’s, as we Ease on Down the Road from the Wiz. What did I miss? And Raye should have been the one singing Diamonds, but they gave her wonderful voice a terriblel arrangement of Skyfall!AgreeMost of those names are better known for television than the movies so they will be honored at the Emmy Awards.A lot of these names are more well-known in the TV world. Aside from Morgan Spurlock, I don’t find fault with the “snubs”Excuse me, but you’re a misinformed mf. Shannen was in several films with the movie Heathers being one of her earliest films. Michelle Tratchenberg’s first film was in the hit movie Harriet the Spy and she went on to do several films as well. Oh and let us not forget the legendary Tony Todd who was well known for his role as the Candyman and in the Final Destination films. Take your head out your rear and get the correct info before talking nonsense.Devon is right. Nothing mean about what they said, just common sense. Although Shannon and Michelle did do movies, they are more well-known for television roles. Asked the general public what they know them from and you’ll get 100 responses of 90210, Charmed, Buffy and Gossip Girl to each mention of Heathers and Harriet the Spy.Well tracthenbrrg her other big movie is ice princess the last 2 days it was #4 on Disney + top 10 today is #5Eurotrip is a cultural touchstone for men of a certain age and I’m not saying her jean shorts and top is why but her jean shorts and top is why.I never heard of these people.I agree with you, being in a movie or 2 doesn’t make a person a movie star.Hey guess what? Shouldn’t matter what medium they’re from. Shannen Doherty and Michelle Trachtenberg WERE in movies. Your argument holds no water. They still count. An actor or actress is an actor or actress no matter what they were in.No, it does matter lol. It’s about what they were MOST known for. Arguably 90210 and Charmed in addition to MAYBE Pete and Pete and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. And Linda Lavin was TV and also a stage actress. They often say that certain celebs are better known for TV, and therefore seem.justified in leaving those actors out.But they left out Mitzi Gaynor for heavens sake!!!!THIS I AGREE WITHThey should have included Michelle Trachtenberg and Shannen Doherty in the memoriam. Sad to leave these people out. They will be in the Emmy’s. They were known more for their TV work. They’re minor TV stars, not film starsthey include a set designer or a make-up artist? lamoAre set designers and make-up artists not people that should be in an in-memoriam segment?!Just because they are not familiar to you or me, they are essential behind the scenes people. We wouldn’t know the familiar names without all these people because they make the movies happen.Left out Bernard Hill Captain of Titanic, roles in Lord of the Ring, True Crime over decapes of work!I agree, and I am sorry, Alain Deleon was the only Zorro for me and one of the most beautiful men I’ve ever seen along with James Darren….Moondoggie!Bernard Hill was never memorialised on TVLine either. Still grinds my gears that one.mr hill’s biggest roles as a lead were on UK tv and the BAFTAs will remember him in the summerWhen I read your comment, I couldn’t believe it. Him and Mitzi Gaynor should have been included and while there’s always people left out, they were notable omissions. Actually, as was Tony Todd.Horrible music! Requiem, beautiful as it is, was so mournful and dark. AwfulThis year’s segment was more correctly in line by focusing on the departed
100%. In previous years, the attention was directed more towards whoever
was singing, which is so wrong and disrespectful. It’s unfortunate that people
were not included.Thank you Luis! That is the main thing I took away was FINALLY no singer to focus on, just the people we lost. The music is in honor of those who have passed. It is supposed to be mournful.I hear what you’re saying but I’d say it should be more so a mix of mourning but with some hope, not to further bum you out. They were tv stars not movie starsSadly, they left out Mitzi GaynorLeft off Tony Todd, but we know the Acadamy hates horror films.Linda Lavin and Shannon Doherty were television actresses. I don’t think thy did any movies.Linda Lavin Did Mostly TV BUT She was in at least 5 movies including movies with Robert De Niro & Jeff Bridge’s. She should not have been snubbed,START KEEPING TRACK – MAKE A LIST!!! – MAKE THIS ONE PERSON’S JOB!! Start the day after the day after the Oscars air!!!!!! This is unacceptable to ‘forget’ people every year. Linda Lavin?? Shannen Doherty? Mitzi Gaynor? That’s shameful. Come on Oscar’s. DO better.
How would you feel if that was YOUR family member or loved one??Where was Mitzi Gynor?????Left out Olivia Hussey…Juliet from Franco Zeffirelli‘s Romeo and Juliet.I’m not trying to pick a fight. Honestly. Those that make it to the In Memoriam section aren’t just those that have passed on that were in film. But those that have passed on that produced quality work. Sorry but there is a ranking. Louis Gossett Jr and James Earl Jones produced quality work. Some of those mentioned in this article: not so much. Being liked isn’t always a measure of being good at what you do. May they all rest in peace.I watch the first 20 minutes.Conan was terrible.First major award, zzzzzzzzzTurned channel and never returned.80 plus percent of all Americans didn’t see more that 1 or 2 of any movie up for a major award. After Conclave and Wicked…. Coming soon to Netflix. The movie business in theaters has been on a ventilator since Covid.Every single one of the people mentioned above is listed on the Academy’s website. No one was snubbed. I posted the link above but it is awaiting moderation. People complain every year about this person or that person but most are not willing to take the time and actually look to see who is on the actual list. It’s a time issue although I don’t know the criteria as to who does or doesn’t make the on air memoriam. Take a look. You’ll be surprised at how many you ‘ve forgotten or didn’t know about.Yeah–those complaining about actors mostly known FOR TV when there was a clear divide between TV and movies need to give their head a shake. I grew up on Linda Lavin but I would hard pushed to name a movie she appeared in.Shannon was on a few movies but never the main role, most were blink and you miss it roles or movies that were straight to video in recent yearsMichell T had one well known movie that was a teen comedy about 30 years agoThere were many many MOVIE people who just worked in movies that passed away this year that were left outFor those curious. I just did a QUICK search for EVERYONE involve in movies, front and back, to include everyone? The in Memoriam segment would be about 1 hour and 15 minutes, if they all received the 5 second. But here is the thing. Most times, people in the Memoriam segment won or was nominated for an Oscar, did mostly movies, or contributed to feature movies. This is a year debate but this time–they were correct to leave out those three(and I love Linda Lavin) there were far more outlandish omissions than those three The can not have everyone. Most of those folks are more know for TV work, so they’ll appear during the Emmy’s In Mem, but I feel like Tony Todd and John Ashton should have been hereThis production was horrible. Conan wasn’t up the challenge. The foolish numbers started at the opening and the included a Bond medley, plus, The Wiz. However, they didn’t have enough time for the songs that were actually nominated??!! Also, when they would have 5 performers try to “sell” how amazing their crafts folks were (i.e., costumer design, etc.) just felt awkward and slowed down a very long show. They truly need to cut some of these awards off the live telecasts, staring with the “shorts”.Martin Mull, brilliant, shouldn’t have been missed. michell trach something….Who ???One thing to consider about Michelle T. She was if the first Movie that Nikoldeaon (sp) ever released in theaters. In a way, she was part of movie history and should have been honored.I am still upset about the year they left Farrah out but included Muchael Jackson. Farrah had been in several movies. Yes she was better known as a tv star, but Michael was better known as a music star. The logic is off. They could and should do better.I actually felt that this year, the In Memoriam segment was even longer than in previous years. So many good people lost.
At the end, there was a link: https://www.oscars.org/InMemoriam where the Academy lists a lot more names than would be possible to include in the show, as it would just simply take too long for all the names to appear at least a few seconds. Michelle Trachtenberg is on that list, as well as many others that didn’t get an in-show mention.
I think the academy will always face some backlash from fans of some artists that were lost for not includiing them in the In Memoriam segment.
But that’s inevitable when the industry lost so many in the past year.
Yes, maybe instead of singling out Gene Hackman for a special tribute and then also including him in the segment there could have been a few more names added. But there would still be many artists missing. They had time to add Gene Hack man who recently died yet the others were left off? Doesn’t matter the caliber of acting either. As much as I love some of these actors that don’t make the cut, don’t get those that act surprised when actors that are mainly known for their TV roles don’t get included in the memoriam. Especially when we’ve seen this happen each year. If Luke Perry who was in a current Oscar nominated film when he was left off, didn’t make the cut, how could you not assume that Shannen Doherty, Michelle Trachtenberg, etc. also probably wouldn’t be included?By providing your information, you agree to our Terms of Use and our Privacy Policy.
