Capcom’s Crappy Microtransactions Are Back in Monster Hunter Wilds, Including Paid Character Edits – Push Square

Just like in 2018’s Monster Hunter World, players need to pay up with real money if they want to make cosmetic edits to their character or companion Palico.To be clear, the first edit — having already created your custom hunter right at the start of the game — is free. But beyond that, you’ll need to cough up $5.99 / £5.79 for a ‘Character Edit Voucher’ three-pack on the PS Store.Wilds’ character creator is fairly in-depth, and your hero shows up in just about every cutscene throughout the campaign — so if you spot something you’d like to change, you better get it right on your first try.Between these vouchers, Devil May Cry 5’s red orbs currency, and the kerfuffle surrounding Dragon’s Dogma 2’s paid consumables, Capcom’s made a frustrating habit of flogging stuff that most fans would deem unnecessary.And the thing is, these microtransactions are typically unavailable during the game’s review period — so reviewers don’t see what’s for sale until the public launch. The fact that they’ve done this since DMC 5 means it works or they earn enough from it to keep doing it.So if you look at the newsletter they published in-game, vouchers to edit your palico and hunter will be given if you do some events and quests. They already gave 2 vouchers for free. My intuition is that if you are patient and follow the online events, you will get for free what impatient people would pay for.@PuppetMaster – I will never understand why Orb MTX ever came to DMC. It started in DMC4 SE, a game that actually increased Orb drops lol. I made an Orb farm vid for SE back in the day that netted 300k Red Orbs in 30 minutes. The same amount they were selling for £1.79p. I’ll never understand why someone would pay to play a game less after they already paid to play it.That is indeed a crappy microtransaction, there’s no end to the greed of executives in these companies. Next thing we’ll hear is half the dev team is made redundant. Disappointing to hear about this given the good reviews. Did they add it in after the reviews went live too?Well, there’s FAR worse going on in the world than having the option to pay for a character edit voucher pack, which you can pick up during some event quests etc anyway. People just don’t read the small print.And, like the option to pay 99c or whatever for an extra Wakestone or two in Dragon’s Dogma, they only exist as an easy access item for the impatient since you can get them in-game anyway.
