Monster Hunter-Style Free-To-Slay ‘Dauntless’ Is Shutting Down – Nintendo Life

GuestGuestLogin | Sign UpNintendo LifeGuestLogin or Sign UpThe developer also worked on Fae FarmAhead of the arrival of Monster Hunter Wilds later this week, the Monster Hunter-style game Dauntless has announced it will be shutting down. This game, developed by Phoenix Labs (Fae Farm), was originally released on the Switch eShop in December 2019. Here’s the team’s official update (via Steam), confirming the game will no longer be available as of 29th May 2025.Important Update: Dauntless is shutting down on May 29, 2025. Dauntless will receive no additional content or updates. The game will no longer be available to play on May 29, 2025.We didn’t mind this free-to-play experience when it first arrived on the Switch, but it did have some technical issues:”Though this Switch port mightily struggles from a performance perspective, it’s still enjoyable on a consistent enough basis that such issues can be mostly overlooked. It literally costs you nothing more than time to give Dauntless a try, and we’d highly recommend you give it a shot.”Dauntless is still available to download from the Switch eShop and Nintendo’s site, but again, it will be gone by the end of May. This news follows Phoenix Labs laying off the “majority of the studio” last month.Team is also responsible for 2019’s DauntlessJoin the hunt, for freeKeep hunting for answersDid you ever try out this game on the Switch or another platform? Servers are expensive to run and maintain.Never like free-2-play games and this is what happened with free-2-play games in the future. The games will be removed permanently and left the disappointment after that. Play the games in disc / cartridge offline and you can enjoy your games happily every after.@Anti-Matter Not all F2P games end up like that though. Some have the courtesy to actually release an offline version.Knowing this is an MH clone, dunno why they aren’t bothering to do the same.Oh no! I actually really liked this game and thought it was a good monster hunter-like game. Sad to see it’s shutting down. 😭They held out longer than I thought they would, even if it was only a little under five years, they held out longer than some games with bigger backing over that same timeframe.@Samalik Not sure why all free to play games aren’t like that. I feel had they all follow that same trend then people wouldn’t be too harsh on free to play live service games today. Killer Instinct for the Xbox was a free to play live service game that started with just one character (Jago) that you could play for free then they slowly added more characters via seasons as the game’s popularity rises but players had to buy those in able to try them. Once Killer Instinct finished with all its seasonal offerings and finally completed its full roster, it then pack all contents together as a complete full price package game complete with both online and offline play. I didn’t get the game when it was a free to play ripoff but I did manage to get the full completed version for around $40 on Steam during a sale. Unlike the Xbox version though, the Steam version doesn’t come with the Nintendo arcade versions of Killer Instinct 1 & 2.I did like it when I played it. I wonder if I download it if I will be able to still pay offline….I’m not surprised they’re shutting it down. The game apparently fell off after the update they did that overhauled the entirety of the game.I thought this game was a junk MH ripoff.Unfortunate to hear for those still playing it and while I don’t know if this game in particular had any non-online multiplayer parts (although it definitely could if they wanted to considering the kind of game as already mentioned here in the comments) how I wish in general that more and more of such games got offline versions instead of getting completely shut down!I feel sorry for the staff members not the playersI played this game when it first came out…for like…an hour…then I got bored and never went back. lol@Anti-Matter It’s even worse with full price game as a service. Any game based on micro transactions sucks.@Anti-Matter one game I feel doesn’t get credit for how it handles microtransactions is Super Kirby Clash (and I’m assuming Team Kirby Clash Deluxe on the 3DS did the same). You can either buy varying amounts of Gem Apples or the Definitive Pack, which is essentially the “full game” option. If you choose the latter, the game gives you enough Gem Apples and the tree will grow to its max, eliminating the need for more microtransactions. And if for whatever reason you want to buy more, the game actually tries to discourage you from doing so, with a disclaimer saying the tree won’t grow anymore even if you buy more Gem Apples. It helps that the game is offline, only the Online Missions and I believe the Codes are internet bound. This game was such garbagecomparing this game with Monster Hunter is an insult to Monster Hunter. I am surprised this game lasted so long considering how bland of a knock-off it was.Yet another freemium game lost to the unresolved overdependence on servers… although in this case, solving that with a skeleton crew might be pretty tough.@Serpenterror Killer Instinct wasn’t a F2P, the free version is just a glorified demo.Killer Instinct Anniversary Edition is the complete game. The F2P model was a lie told by the IGN “journos”, then, other journos repeated the same misinformation instead of investigating on their own.@Anti-Matter Even worse here is that the devs effectively did a hard reset with the last update so that they could charge for each class/weapon and make more money. So any progress you had was now moot. Cant even keep your progress while the game is maintained.I’m not anti-F2P, and I respect shut downs as the memories I have with those games will stay with me, like Dragalia Lost. This one is just an awful experience all around. For the best honestly. I don’t want to play a game that’s owned by a blockchain company.@HammerGalladeBro the 3ds game unfortunately did not have that future which is a shame. The original was one of my favorite 3ds games as a kid.
