PS5 Pro sales ‘have fallen behind PS4 Pro in the US’ – Video Games Chronicle

The $700 console upgrade reportedly enjoyed a strong start at launchUS PlayStation 5 Pro sales have fallen behind PlayStation 4 Pro’s sales performance during its first months of sale.That’s according to data from market research firm Circana, shared by analyst Mat Piscatella. However, it’s worth noting that PlayStation 5 Pro retails for significantly more than PS4 Pro did ($700 vs $400), and Circana’s reporting period is also one week less.In November, Piscatella claimed that PS5 Pro had enjoyed “a solid start,” with unit sales “in the same ballpark as PS4 Pro’s launch”.PlayStation 5 Pro was released on November 7 for $700/£800. Over 50 games subsequently received updates with graphical upgrades and other performance improvements.Sony has not released official PS5 Pro sales figures. However, its latest earnings results included Pro sales for the first time, and showed that launch-aligned, PlayStation 5 is now just 1.5 million units behind PlayStation 4 during the same period of its lifecycle (75m vs 76.5m).Commenting on its PlayStation business during a web call, the company highlighted the success of Astro Bot and Helldivers 2, which it said signified its intention to expand in the areas of family games and live service titles.Looking ahead, Death Stranding 2 and Ghost of Yotei will release this year, alongside significant third-party titles like Monster Hunter Wilds and Grand Theft Auto 6.Sony said it had “high expectations” for the titles releasing in its next fiscal year, which runs from April 1, and that it’s planning to release more family games in the future, following the success of Astro Bot.We sometimes publish affiliate links on VGC. I called it when the Pro specs leaked, because the Pro is barely an upgrade over base PS5 and bottlenecked by its CPU. PS4 Pro was a much more significant upgrade last generation – and it was much cheaper as well.All in all it’s safe to say that PS5 Pro was a mistake. It’s way too expensive for what it offers and the average gamer struggles to see differences to base PS5. However, probably the worst about PS5 Pro is, that it diminishes the next generational leap. With every new console generation, the difference to its previous generation became smaller. In recent years PC hardware kinda stagnated too (see RTX50, RX9070, Arc B, Ryzen 9000, Intel Core Ultra). All while prices skyrocketed. Launching a PS5 Pro makes the leap to PS6 even less impactful.PS6 and Xbox Xero will feel more like actual Pro consoles for this generation. I’m very confident in this prediction. If nextgen would be a more meaningful upgrade, consoles would cost well over $1000 and that’s an absolute no-go for console manufacturers. I’ve gotten plenty of games that have taken proper advantage of the console like FF7 rebirth, Stellar blade and Kingdom come deliverance 2. Beautiful clarity that sadly the PS5 and Xbox series should have. Watching videos with YouTube compression is not going to get you that only repeating the same comments from echo chambers from xbox fan channels. The days of massive jumps and gains are gone so you are going to continue to be disappointed but the pro brings nicer resolutions and performance which is great if you have it. Saying it isn’t when you don’t even own a base PS5 is a bit disingenuous.Basically you have nothing valueable to add. Instead you label Digital Foundry as “Xbox fanboy channel” because they couldn’t recommend PS5 Pro due to its high price with small gains (in some cases rather downgrades). At the same time you probably watch DF because you have trouble to spot the differences to base PS5. This level of disingenuousness is truly astounding! It also seems you couldn’t find any argument to counter my main points, PS5 Pro’s ($700, +40% better than PS5) ridiculous price for gains that are a lot smaller than than PS4 Pro ($400, +135% better than PS4) and the fact that PS5 Pro will make PS6 an even more underwhelming generational leap. Come back when you find actual arguments.Having the most powerful console on the market has its benefits and it is $300 more – the expectations probably weren’t that unit sales would be equal to the PS4 Pro. It’s hard to draw any conclusions from a few months of sales and a sentence as part of an analyst’s social media thread for one region.When did it ever benefit? In fact, the opposite is true : Xbox was more powerful than PS2, but PS2 sold a lot better. PS3 was more powerful than Xbox 360 but it sold worse for years and devs focused on the more pooular platform so games performed better on the “weaker” Xbox 360. PS4 was better than Xbox One, but One X a lot better than PS4 Pro – it didn’t matter tho. This gen Xbox Series X has better hardware than PS5 – and, did Xbox won? No. – I guess you agree with the marginal generational leap ahead – otherwise it’s hard to explain why you try to argue while ignoring the main point of my statement. PS5 Pro will make PS6 even less exciting – incl. fans of the platform. The leap from PS5 to PS6 would be the smallest yet due to the points of my initial comment. PS5 Pro makes the leap even more insignificant.The PS5 Pro is not the “baseline” of the generation, either in price or capability; that’s the PS5/Xbox Series X. It’s a half-step upgrade console, and is currently the most powerful game console one can buy. That has the advantage of appealing to high-end users, just like the Xbox Series S has the advantage because of its low price to a mass market. Theres no need for a block button hopefully.I think the graph highlights Sony’s main problem: It sells consoles in near identical numbers to the same people over and over again, with zero growth or diversification. Looking at PS5’s overall sales, it’s looking likely that it’ll sell roughly the same as PS4 by the end of its lifecycle.Had the PS2 not also been a DVD player, it’s reasonable to assume that that console’s sales would have maxed out at 120M-130M units.Nintendo has an unfair reputation for being bad at follow-ups, but isn’t it Sony that has been unable to outperform its bestselling console from 20+ years ago?© 1981 Media Ltd.
