How genetically modified eggs could bring dodo back to life – The Times

The chickens won’t know they are special. As they strut around they will look like normal chickens, squawk like normal chickens and mate like normal chickens. But when they do mate, if Dr Anna Berenson’s plans come off, something very abnormal will happen: these domestic chickens will make the egg of a red junglefowl — a wild chicken. And, if that then hatches, two more things will happen. First, said Berenson, the chickens “will be like, ‘What the heck is this!’” Second, it will provide hope that the same method could be used to do something even more impressive — protect birds at risk of extinction and bring long-dead birds back to our skies. Or, in the case of the dodo, to our forest floors.© Times Media Limited 2025.Registered in England No. 894646. Registered office: 1 London Bridge Street, SE1 9GF.
