In a landmark announcement that underscores Netflix‘s continued close relationship with Mexico’s audiovisual industry, Co-CEO Ted Sarandos revealed a $1 billion investment in the country over the next four years.
The commitment, unveiled during a press conference with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, aims to bolster the local audiovisual industry and create a plethora of opportunities nationwide.
“It is great to be back in Mexico City. Every time I come here, I’m amazed by the blend of the old and the new — between history and modern culture,” Sarandos said. “It’s inspiring. And it helps explain why there’s always been so much creativity in Mexico — from art and food to literature, architecture and, of course, storytelling.”

Netflix’s longstanding relationship with Mexico has been transformative for the region’s industry. Since debuting there in 2011, the streaming giant has produced a wide range of series and films that have resonated deeply with Mexican audiences and made major waves abroad. The company’s first series outside the United States, “Club de Cuervos,” was a paradigm-shifting landmark for the nascent streaming ecosystem and laid the foundation for Netflix’s local production strategy, emulated in other countries around the world. “We created [the show] in Mexico for Mexico — and it paved the way for our programming strategy, which is all about local production,” Sarandos noted.

The impact of Netflix’s presence in Mexico is undeniable. From the Oscar-winning “Roma” to “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” – which featured work done at the Taller de Chucho studio in Guadalajara – the platform has consistently showcased the rich tapestry of Mexican storytelling. “Over the years, we’ve worked with Mexican creators on hundreds of other series and films that have captured the hearts of Mexican audiences — from ‘The House of Flowers’ to ‘Where the Track Ends,’ to the recently announced ‘Love Sick’ and ‘The Dead Girls,’” Sarandos highlighted.
As a part of its investment, Netflix has earmarked $2 million for the iconic Churubusco Studios, a historic site where some of the best Mexican films have been made.
Netflix’s commitment extends beyond just production. The company is also investing in programs that nurture diverse and creative talents behind the camera. “Together with our government and industry partners, we’ll also keep funding programs that help diverse and creative talent behind the camera break into entertainment,” Sarandos said. This initiative, which includes a fund of over $1 million announced last year, aims to develop the next generation of Mexican filmmakers and storytellers.

The economic ripple effect of Netflix’s investment is substantial. A recent study conducted with the Inter-American Development Bank revealed that the audiovisual industry in Mexico contributes $3 billion to the economy annually. For every dollar spent, $1.6 of added value is generated, creating a multiplier effect that benefits various sectors, from set construction to tourism.
“President Sheinbaum, at Netflix, we share your vision of a vibrant, prosperous Mexico full of growth and opportunity. And we want to play our part in making it a reality,” Sarandos affirmed. “Our journey in Mexico so far has taken us from North to South — from Baja California’s sunset shores to the Caribbean’s sunrise sands. We have produced in over 50 locations across 25 states. And with this renewed commitment, we look forward to deepening our partnership even more.”
