The 2025 Writers Guild Awards took place Saturday night, with the guild continuing its tradition of doling out prizes in simultaneous ceremonies in New York and Los Angeles.
In the film categories, Anora ultimately took home the award for original screenplay, beating out A Real Pain, Challengers, Civil War and My Old Ass. As for adapted screenplay, Nickel Boys won, beating A Complete Unknown, Dune: Part Two, Hit Man and Wicked.

On the TV side, Shogun won for drama series while Hacks scored the award for comedy series. Shogun‘s “Anjin” also won for episodic drama, and Hacks‘ “Bulletproof” won for episodic comedy. Shogun also captured the award for best new series, while The Penguin won for limited series and Last Week Tonight With John Oliver won for comedy/variety series — talk or sketch.

Joel Kim Booster, who hosted the Los Angeles ceremony, kicked off the L.A. show, telling the crowd at the Beverly Hilton, “Some people have been questioning the need to have an awards ceremony in the midst of a national crisis — and those people were not nominated tonight. But despite how hard the last few years have been, compounded this year by a fire this year that has wounded our city and affected members of our union, we have to find joy. Joy in gathering together a community of writers, lifting each other up by lifting up one person in particular who deserves to be lifted up a little bit more than the rest of you.”
He also noted the importance of writers at this time in going “a long way towards giving people hope” and shouted out the first responders for “keeping our homes, and Quinta Brunson’s second home, safe.”
Roy Wood Jr., host of the New York ceremony, welcomed people to the show during what he said would be the U.S.’ final Black History Month and last awards show — ever.
He noted that due to the BAFTAs taking place the next day, the screenplay awards were being presented first as those nominees needed to get on a plane to London amid snowy weather in New York. However, he jokingly cautioned those who won those prizes that they “will be stopped at the TSA” if they were carrying their WGA Award, which he quipped looks “like it was designed by a gynecologist on ketamine.”
He went on to joke about Madame Web; Justin Baldoni; the Trump administration’s attacks on diversity, equity and inclusion; the president’s overhaul of the Kennedy Center (“Showtime at the apocalypse”); and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., joking that writers of medical shows should now ask themselves how the newly confirmed health secretary would solve this problem, adding that Kennedy would first “create the problem.”

“We survived the pandemic; we survived the strikes; we survived the fires; we survived Madame Web; we survived Kraven the Hunter, and we survived Venom 3,” he said, adding of Baldoni, “we also survived being forced to know who Justin Baldoni is. I will be honest with you, I’m still not sure who Justin Baldoni is. I stay out of the white people business.”
Nickel Boys took home the first win of the night, for adapted screenplay, with RaMell Ross declaring in L.A., “The Writers Guild is a special guild because you guys are the smartest.” He returned to the stage a few minutes later to accept the Paul Selvin Award from presenter Franklin Leonard, as he said that in these current times, “the imagination is the most powerful form of resistance.”
Nickel Boys co-writer Joslyn Barnes accepted the adapted screenplay prize in New York.
Roughly an hour in, Wood Jr. delivered a tribute to Saturday Night Live, also celebrating its 50th anniversary with star-studded celebrations in New York on Friday and Sunday nights. “When Saturday Night Live first appeared, the only way to watch it was on the wall of a cave. Technology has evolved as well as the show,” he said.
He added that the show has survived multiple actors and writers strikes “and the directors strike. (It lasted 19 hours. They stood tall for almost a whole day.)” SNL, he said, has hired more than 400 writers over its history, which means, “Lorne Michaels has employed more people in New York than Dick Wolf.” The awards ceremony even displayed the names of all of the writers who’ve worked for SNL on a screen behind Wood Jr.

Midway through the L.A. ceremony, Kyle MacLachlan took the stage to posthumously honor the late David Lynch with the Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement, telling the crowd, “I couldn’t imagine my life or my career without him.”
“He could see things in you you would never see in yourself,” Lynch’s longtime collaborator said, celebrating the “mix of the dark and ordinary that he made uniquely his own.” Before a video montage highlighting Lynch’s work, MacLachlan added, “My heart breaks that he’s gone, but the world is so much fuller because he was here.”
WGA West president Meredith Stiehm also took the podium during the L.A. show, noting the current difficulties in the industry as “Peak TV is over.” She called out tech companies for “using our work to train AI models — taking our scripts without permission, credit or compensation for their own profit. That is theft, plain and simple.”
Stiehm continued, “Our president is being puppeted by the richest man in the world” and acknowledged “people are understandably fearful and I can only speak for our community here — we’re just one small union in one state, but I want to say to our members, the Guild’s values have not changed. We believe in labor, in freedom of speech, civil rights, inclusion and equity,” to huge applause. “We do not cower in the face of bullies, we do not turn our backs on people being bullied; we protect and push back.”
In New York, Matt Tarses presented Bill Lawrence with the Herb Sargent award, joking when he took the stage, “I know what you’re thinking, ‘Where is Harrison Ford?’ He went on to highlight how the Scrubs, Ted Lasso and Shrinking writer had done “7,000 television shows” with many “famous people,” wondering aloud why none of them were there.

Tarses, who met Lawrence on Scrubs and later recalled “wisely” passing on Ted Lasso, recapped Lawrence’s writing career adding some snarky comments about Lawrence’s “straight up confidence.”
“When you first meet Bill you think, ‘I’m not going to like this guy.’ And then as you get to know him, you think ‘Yep, I was right.’ He looks and acts like all of the guys who beat you up in high school, and then, what makes it even more annoying: You find out he’s the funniest guy in the room when he tells you he is the funniest guy in the room,” he added, conceding that it’s “hard not to root against a guy like Bill” and that ultimately his enthusiasm “does sort of wear you down.”
Turning earnest, he added, “As we know, this business can be very punishing, so it’s nice to have a guy on your side who just refuses to be beaten. And once he’s at your side, he doesn’t leave. … He’s incredibly loyal to the people he trusts. He’s working with many of the same people he met over 20 years ago. And it doesn’t hurt either that he’s the most inclusive person you ever worked with.”
Taking the stage after a highlight reel of his work, which also featured praise from his Shrinking colleagues Brett Goldstein and Jason Segel, Lawrence thanked, among others, his wife Christa Miller, who he called his “muse” and who attended the ceremony with him and two of their kids, Charlotte and Henry.
“I assumed if they give you one of these awards, they also nominate your show,” he quipped of the WGA Awards, drawing attention to the fact that none of his shows were nominated for an award that night. He then tweaked his well-known loquaciousness, saying, “I’m only going to speak for about 45 minutes.”

Lawrence went on to talk about mentorship and earnestly encouraged people in attendance to devote some time to helping others. “All of us got in the door because someone believed in us,” he said, cautioning that he feared in this “new landscape” he was “not sure the same opportunities exist for the next generation.”
“If I do nothing else tonight, I really want to implore you, go out and find a young person to believe in,” he said.
He then shared some advice: “Give an hour of your time to someone every month, … volunteer at the showrunners training program, … ask the PA or writer’s assistant if they want to walk to set with you or grab lunch and talk. … Being a mentor is never selfless — I legitimately drink the blood of young writers.”
He ended by thanking his assistant, adding in a sweet note, “She’s going to be a writer someday soon, and she had to type up this speech, so I thought this would be a cool way to tell her.”
Marielle Heller presented Scott Frank, who she called one of her “favorite people to fight with” and who she worked with on The Queen’s Gambit in a rare acting role after a 10-year hiatus from the craft, with the Ian McLellan Hunter Career Achievement Award.
Accepting the award after a reel of his work, Frank joked about the honor, thanking the guild ”for letting me know in such a nice way that my career’s over. … I’m being given the rare opportunity to accept a posthumous award in person, give the eulogy at my own funeral.”

During his speech, he recalled his mom’s obsession with Merv Griffin and how she often took him to the movies, including R-rated titles and the X-rated Midnight Cowboy, saying those screenings are “probably the very reason I’m standing here right now.” He added that while this seems like the “series finale to a show that I’d like to call, ‘it was good while it lasted’ … I think the future of writing is pretty bright.”
Greg Iwinski — who got tapped to present less than 24 hours prior after Penelope Koechl was unavailable to attend — presented the Richard B. Jablow Award for Devoted Service to the Guild to Kathy McGee in New York.
In Los Angeles, Rhea Seehorn was on hand to present Vince Gilligan with the Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award for Television Writing Achievement, accompanied by video messages from Gillian Anderson and Bryan Cranston. Gilligan acknowledged up front that he was “going political” and called for scribes to “write more good guys” so that fictional bad guys stop being idolized, which translates to their treatment in real life.
There was a QR code on the tables and in the program at the New York ceremony to donate to the Writers Guild Member Fund, administered by the Entertainment Community Fund, to support wildfire relief in L.A. and writers who have lost their homes or been displaced by the fires. There was also a call to donate from the stage in New York.
