The long-awaited Bregman decision removes him from the Houston Astros following a nine-year stint. The Chicago Cubs offered Bregman a four-year, $120 million contract, Feinsand reported, with opt-out options in 2026 and 2027, however, it wasn’t enticing enough. Bregman spent the bulk of this offseason exploring and turning down offers left and right, including a six-year contract offer from the Astros in December. It became progressively unclear what the 30-year-old veteran, represented by agent Scott Boras, was seeking in the open market but Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow found the magic numbers. Boston, after searching since last season’s MLB trade deadline, now has its right-handed bat and can blow a well-deserved chef’s kiss. Bregman provides the Red Sox with 99 games of postseason experience, a shoulder to lean on for their young up-and-coming prospects — like Kristian Campbell, Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer — and reliable infield defense that earned Bregman a Gold Glove Award in 2024. Bregman slashed .260/.315/.453 with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs across 145 games with Houston last season and is a career .375 hitter at Fenway Park — through 98 plate appearances. Bregman’s right-handed swing, that sent 22 of his 26 home runs to left field, could be a perfect match for Fenway Park’s 310-foot distance from home plate to its 37-foot Green Monster wall in left field.
