Video: We’ve Played Civilization VII On Nintendo Switch – Here’s 15 Minutes Of Gameplay – Nintendo Life

GuestGuestLogin | Sign UpNintendo LifeGuestLogin or Sign UpCiv, laugh, loveWe certainly didn’t expect to see Sid Meier’s Civilization VII launch on the ageing Nintendo Switch, but here we are! The latest entry in the 4X series has finally marched our way, and while we at Nintendo Life are still getting into the strategy for our full review, we do have some Switch gameplay to highlight what’s in store.Above, you’ll find 15 minutes of Switch tactics, showcasing the game’s land-spanning maps, close-up character models and all of the classic Civ moving parts as you can expect to find them on the Nintendo hybrid. The results are… pretty good. Sure, there’s a little slowdown in places as things get busier, and the visuals aren’t quite as crisp as what you’ll find on the PC version, but anyone who played the brilliant Civ VI on Switch won’t find too many surprises here.As we mentioned, you’ll have to wait a little while longer to hear our full thoughts on Civ VII on Switch, so keep an eye out for our review in due course. While very few people have put the latest entry through its paces on console at the time of writing, the PC reviews have seemed mostly positive overall, though the game’s streamlined experience is proving to be a catching point for some.New entry launches this month“Switch has been very, very important”What do you make of this Civ VII Switch gameplay footage? Have you picked it up already? Let us know in the comments.About Jim NormanJim came to Nintendo Life in 2022 and, despite his insistence that The Minish Cap is the best Zelda game and his unwavering love for the Star Wars prequels (yes, really), he has continued to write news and features on the site ever since.Comments 23Happy to hear Civilization VII runs relatively well also on Switch for those interested (potentially me included at some point) – looking forward to the full review whenever it’s ready!handling of later game is the true test – I hope that the review covers that.Game / engine is running smoother than Civ 6, that’s for sure. But the start and lack of an opening tutorial (it’s a tutorial as you go instead so far) has me a bit thrown off….I’m use to starting Civ as a settler and picking my starting location. This one just gave me 2 cities right off the bat…. Meanwhile Napoleon, and 2 other civs have 4 cities starting out….Also started with a lot of units….It’s almost like I’m playing a scenario, but all I did was hit new game. I truly hope this isn’t the “streamlined” process I’d heard about…. Was trying to keep Civ 7 news and such away and give myself a spoiler free experience….This game will be perfect for the Switch 2.@Dm9982 Weird, when I started a new game (on Steam, with Benjamin Franklin and Greece), I just started with a settler. Did you start in a later age or something?Going by the shown footage, I think the Switch version runs good enough. The music is really nice. If the Switch 2 has a mouse functionality, I might get the game after all. Seems relaxing.I’m positively surprised by how well this runs and looks on Switch. The devs deserve a raise!@SteveDaSteve I started in ancient age and with Ben Franklin. Def an odd start.Granted I was playing the early access edition, so that may have been it. LolPlayed CIV6 alot on Switch for a good while before the loading drove us to the brink of madness and a well timed mega sale on Xbox ended it.It looks like it’s running a lot faster, I really want this one Switch but I do feel like I need to know what the “deal” is going to be with Switch 2. Will there be S2 natvie port, will there be a next gen update, or will it just run better by virtue of the better hardware.@Dm9982 The game should start with just the founder unit. Starting from a later age simulates the earlier ages by giving you cities and units at the start. From what I’ve heard, some options aren’t even unlocked until you’ve started your first game, though as I’ve not played the game myself, I can’t say if starting from later age is one of them. What civ were you playing as?This game has my interest but I’m not sure I’ll like some of the changes. The magnet status every country gets when entering a new era is one thing I really don’t like and picking a leader Togo with whatever country you so choose is a bit odd to me, I guess you get more possible ways to play it but I just like to make the scenarios feel a bit more authentic. Also I don’t care for multiple versions of one leader. I’m sure I’ll get this on down the line when we get more content to play with.I haven’t played this series since Civilization III Complete on PC, so I don’t know why but this one has my attention, specifically on the Switch. I’m looking forward to the review and to see how the entire experience plays out on Switch hardware!I still haven’t been able to finish the tutorial in Civ 6 on the Switch. It soft locks when you have to buy a unit and I can’t figure out how to get past it. Whereas the tutorial for Civ 4 is the most quaint and relaxing time I’ve had in a while. Civ 6 does have some slowdown in later eras on the Switch so if they can add the rest of the missing content to Civ 7 I might get it cause from what I’ve seen and heard it looks unfinished.Been playing the early release on Steam since the first day. I’m enjoying it. Looking forward to the massive amounts of patches/updates the devs have in the works.@Late I chose Ben Franklin and Ancient Era, as I’ve always loved starting from a bare bones Civ and building into a great country. If that’s the case of it auto generating some cities in ancient times then that kind sucks….. I’ll have to adapt I guess. Is it true the switch version massively limits map size ?It’s getting some pretty mixed reviews on Steam, so I’m going to hold off getting it, until they patched some stuff up. Apparently the end-game phase isn’t really ironed out, just yet. So until they do, I’ll be content playing other games. Besides all that, 70 euros for a digital game is a bit steep…@Dm9982 What I’m saying is that it shouldn’t do that for Antiquity, only for Exploration and Modern age. Civilizations and leaders are decoupled in 7. I was asking for the civ specifically.@h3s Maximum map size on Switch is Small which is one size smaller than the current largest size in other versions, Standard.@Late Ouch, so the max map sizes are reduced in size to make the game work on Switch? That sounds like quite a sacrifice if you want to play the game on Switch… I’ll be playing on PC for multiple reasons, but knowing this, I can’t see myself getting the game on Switch at all.51 % positive reviews on Steam. No thanks on either platform.I have warm memories of the very first Civilization and Colonization game though. Never got hooked up on never versions, even if I touched some of them briefly.@Late hmmm ok I’ll have to check the Civ I picked. I knew of the decoupling – which is odd, but honestly I’m fine with. I know I chose the earliest age, which I guess is Antiquity (sorry my 42 yr old brain doesn’t work like it use to, and I confused it for ancient. Lol). And I know I chose Ben Franklin. But I can’t remember which Civ, haven’t picked it back up since launch day (early access launch day). I wanna say I chose Greece, but not positive.I may have chosen Exploration age…. I know I was offered only two ages at the start…. Modern and another. I’ll check in an hour or so when I get back to my Switch.Edit – Ben, Norman, and indeed chose Exploration Age. Need to restart this game lol@h3sYou get the six player small and four player tiny maps. Hoping for a Switch 2 update.I’ve only played for a little over 2 hours on PC so far and I’m loving it! And I have played every Civ game, including the very first. Granted, I haven’t got to the changing of the Ages yet, but enjoying most mechanics so far, whether new or altered from Civ 6.If it plays decently well on the Switch too, ass seems to be the case going by this article, then I definitely recommend people buy the game.
