A few days after Lamar took to the stage in the Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show and shaded Drake with his 2024 song, “Not Like Us,” Drake had a response for Lamar. But if we learned anything about the Super Bowl Halftime it’s that this is likely not the end of it.Lamar also performed hits like “Humble” and “Euphoria” and had guests including SZA and Samuel L. Jackson on his show. But he didn’t waste the opportunity to call out Drake, with guest Serena Williams—Drake’s ex—present, the lyrics, “Say, Drake, I hear you like ’em young. Tryna strike a chord and it’s probably A-minorrrrrr,” and even a silver “a” necklace.

In September, he posted photos of Lil Wayne to his Instagram stories—presumably supporting the idea that Lil Wayne should have headlined the show in his hometown of New Orleans. But the singer, who was out of the U.S. performing internationally, hadn’t said a lot more about Lamar since the announcement. That, of course, changed after everyone got to watch Lamar’s actual performance. But what did Drake have to say about Lamar’s Super Bowl performance? How did he react?Drake didn’t specifically say something—but this feud has been less about words and more about songs, so that tracks. Instead, the singer altered the lyrics of his song “Knife Talk” during a performance in Melbourne, Australia. The original track, which appears on his 2021 album Certified Lover Boy, has the lyrics “Beef is live, spoiler alert, this n***a dies.”This time, however, Drake had a different message, changing the line to “Beef is live, spoiler alert, I never died,” presumably a message to Lamar about how, despite his performance, Drake is alive and well. Hours before the Halftime Show, in another concert, Drake gave out $45,000 to fans at the show. He also told them, “It really touches my heart that—through all of that, you still take your hard-earned money, and you spend some of that money on tickets to this show to see this kid from Canada get up here and talk s–t. I really appreciate you. I would be nothing without you.”
Related: What does Drake’s dating history look like?Lamar and Drake first worked together in 2011, when Lamar was featured on the song “Buried Alive Interlude” from Drake’s second album, Take Care. He later opened for Drake on his Club Paradise tour in 2012, and the two collaborated on two more songs, “Poetic Justice” from Lamar’s second album, Good Kid, MAAD City, and “Fuckin’ Problems” from A$AP Rocky’s debut album, Long. Live. ASAP.But the relationship would sour after Drake and J.Cole put themselves, alongside Lamar, as the “big three” in hip-hop in the song “First Person Shooter.” Later, Kendrick Lamar used the song “Like That” by Future and Metro Boomin in which he was featured to dismiss the idea saying “It’s just big me.” That led to a back-and-forth of diss tracks between the two, which culminated in Kendrick Lamar’s song “Not Like Us” winning Song of the Year and Record of the Year at the 67th Grammy Awards. The song also won categories like Best Rap Song, Best Music Video, and Best Rap Performance.
Considering all of that, Drake’s response isn’t all that surprising. And the fact that this feud is likely not resolved isn’t either. We’re putting our money on a response to Lamar when Drake and PartyNextDoor’s $ome $exy $ongs 4 U collab album debuts on February 14.
