NXT recap & reactions: Overbooked and undercooked – Cageside Seats

Filed under:The King regains his senses, the Queen makes her return, and no, Trick Williams & Eddy Thorpe cannot co-exist on this week’s NXT. Somebody stop him! @EddyThorpe_WWE is out of control!!! #WWENXT pic.twitter.com/rVNl9ORcyHThat title sums up my feelings on this week’s main event, and the episode as a whole. But I’ll focus on the main event and I won’t have a lot to say. Bear with me if that changes. We got the predicable “can they co-exist” thing between Oba Femi and Trick Williams. The answer before, during, and after the match was an emphatic “nah.” They almost pulled it off despite damn near fighting each other instead of their opponents, but leave it to Eddy Thorpe to rain on their parade and mine. Why do we need Eddy here? Trick and Oba is a compelling story and doesn’t need this extra wrinkle. In fact, every time he’s a part of it, both men treat him like an annoyance instead of a threat. He adds nothing to the overall story and still hasn’t shown he’s worthy of their time. I get that Trick needs something to do at Vengeance Day but there are other ways to get him involved other than what I assume will be a strap match. Oh, and not for nothing, but the match didn’t even make it look like Oba should feel even a little threatened by Austin Theory or Grayson Waller. He dominated both men and they can’t even get on the same page about who will win the NXT championship. A main event that did nothing for anyone except a guy who needs to go elsewhere. The Queen is here! @MsCharlotteWWE has arrived!! #WWENXT pic.twitter.com/GCPDK5BNEyOnce again, this was a major segment that did nothing for me. It was obvious Charlotte would make an appearance while Roxanne Perez, Bayley, and Giullia discussed the NXT women’s championship. As the heel, Charlotte makes everything about her and it continues a thread from Raw. The problem is that with Charlotte making everything about her, Roxanne making everything about her, and even Bayley doing the same, it made the actual champ seem small. It doesn’t help that she’s the least established of the four, so far as NXT is concerned anyway, and that they’re dominating presences. But there’s a way to book the segment so that the champ feels like the champ instead of an afterthought. Throw in Cora Jade at the end and now the question is who came out of the segment looking good other than Cora and Charlotte? That’s not effective writing or creativity. This was a painfully boring two hours of television. And that ending with Eddy Thorpe just made it worse. I know we’re coming off Royal Rumble and there’s a lot of pieces to place, but this was a nothing episode that executed a few things effectively but not enough. What say you, cagesiders?
