The surcharges come amid rising food prices related to inflation and avian influenza.“The continuing egg shortage caused by HPAI (Bird Flu) has caused a dramatic increase in egg prices,” Waffle House said in a memo shared by The Hill. “Consumers and restaurants are being forced to make difficult decisions. Effective February 3, Waffle House has implemented a temporary .50 per egg surcharge to all menus.”The recent epidemic started in 2022 and has killed about 150 million birds, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Egg prices have significantly risen and shortages reported at some grocery stores in recent weeks as cases of the bird flu climb in the United States. Data from the Labor Department shows a nearly 40% increase in egg prices since January 2024.The skyrocketing prices led to the theft of a hundred thousand eggs worth $40,000 from a central Pa. supplier.In the memo Waffle House didn’t say how long the surcharge would be in effect, the Hill reported.“While we hope these price fluctuations will be short-lived we cannot predict how long this shortage will last,” the memo said.Waffle House operates about 2,100 locations and serves about 272 million eggs annually, according to the website.If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
